Ganesh was born when Parvati was taking a bath--she scrubbed the dirt and cosmetics from her body, molded them into the shape of a boy, and then animated it.

The young boy was ordered to guard the door to her chamber, and proved a valiant servant--repelling everyone from entering, until Shiva himself came, fought the boy, and eventually cut off his head.  Parvati was furious, and to placate her Shiva promised to replace that head with the head of the first animal he

encountered, which happened to be an elephant.  The red lettering informs people that this is the very spot where Ganesh was formed, and thus again seeks to connect mythology with geography.

रुद्रप्रयाग से मंदाकिनी के साथ-साथ गौरीकुंड का रास्ता है। कुल दूरी ६७ कि.मी. काफी कठिन चढ़ाई है। एक ओर आकाश छूते पहाड़ हैं, तो दूसरी ओर तंग घाटी।

चढ़ाई प्रारंभ होने से पहले 'अगस्त्य मुनि' नामक कस्बा है। इस रास्ते में प्रसिद्ध असुर राजा वाणासुर की राजधानी शोणितपुर के चिन्ह भी मिलते हैं। फिर आता है गुप्तकाशी। 'काशी' यानी भगवान शंकर की नगरी। गुप्तकाशी मंदिर में 'अर्द्धनारीश्वर' के रूप में भगवान शंकर विराजमान हैं।

गुप्तकाशी से २० कि.मी. आगे स्वर्णप्रयाग है, जहाँ स्वर्ण गंगा मंदाकिनी से मिलती है। आगे 'नारायण कोटि' नामक गाँव हैं। यहाँ देव मूर्तियाँ खंडित अवस्था में प्राप्त हुई हैं।

गौरीकुंड, सोन प्रयाग से गौरीकुंड की दूरी 5 किलोमीटर है। यह समुद्र तल से 1982 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित है। केदारनाथ मार्ग पर गौरीकुंड अंतिम बस स्‍टेशन है।

केदारनाथ में प्रवेश करने के बाद लोग यहां पूल पर स्थित गर्म पानी से स्‍नान करते हैं। इसके बाद गौरी देवी मंदिर दर्शन के लिए जाते हैं। यह वहीं स्‍थान है जहां माता पार्वती ने भगवान शिव को पाने के लिए तपस्‍या की थी।

गौरीकुंड का जल थोड़ा कम गर्म रहता है। इसी में यात्री स्नान करते हैं। प्रकृति का कितना अजूबा है यह स्थान। सूर्यकुंड के पास ही एक शिला है, जिसे दिव्य-शिला कहते हैं। इसकी पूजा का विशेष महत्व है। स्नान के बाद दिव्य-शिला की पूजा की जाती है। उसके बाद यमुना नदी की पूजा की जाती है।

एक हैरानी की बात है कि असित मुनि ने यहाँ तप किया था। अपनी आध्यात्मिक व मानसिक शक्ति के बल पर वे प्रतिदिन यमुनोत्री व गंगोत्री दोनों जगहों पर स्नान करके यमुनोत्री लौट जाते थे, लेकिन बुढ़ापे में जब यह नामुमकिन हो गया तो गंगाजी खुद एक सूक्ष्म धारा के रूप में इसी स्थान पर चट्टान से निकलकर फूट पड़ीं। यही वजह है कि आज भी यमुनोत्री में गंगा जी की पूजा का प्रचलन है। यहां से आगे सप्तकुंड है, जिसका खास महत्व माना गया है।

Gaurikund, situated amidst pristine Himalayan environs, is located in the district of Rudraprayag in the hill state of Uttarakhand in India. At an elevation of 1, 982 meters above the sea level, Gaurikund offers breathtaking panoramic view of snow capped higher Himalayan peaks. On clear days, one can even see the famous Kedarnath shrine from here.

Gaurikund, situated on the banks of river Mandakhini and about 5 Km from Sonprayag, is the last bus stop en route Kedarnath. From hereon, there is a steep climb to the celebrated destination of Kedarnath.

Gaurikund is a natural wonder that still remains unblemished by the ever increasing industrial world. It offers comfortable boarding and lodging facilities like tourist guest houses and hotels. Besides, there are a couple of Dharamshalas also where one can put up.

Apart from being the last stop before steep Kedarnath trek, Gaurikund in itself has some interesting places to visit. There is a hot water pond where the pilgrims en route Kedarnath, bathe. The quaint mountainous destination of Gaurikund is also home to the ancient temple of Gauri Mata. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Gauri or Parvati.
