In 1897, Arnold Henry Savage Landor had tried to do a trip from Nainital to Hundesh's (Tibet's) capital Lhasa.
He later wrote a book on the same. Now, its copyright has expired and it is on project guttenberg.

this is an excellent read...tells us how ppl were living in the pahaad about a 100 years ago.
