Bijlwan Community Story about Serving Tehri Prince King Sudarshan Shah in Exile
(Folk Tales from Garhwal series-109)

There are many community stories about Gurkha invasion and Gurkha rule in Garhwal. Bhishma Kukreti penned down such community stories in past.
Garhwali Playwright and Drama Activist Dinesh Bijlwan told this author one such community story.
When Garhwal King was running from Gurkha via Tehri, Dehradun towards Haridwar, Prince Sudarshan Shah was also running and Gurkha followed him.
Prince Sudarshan Shah had to spend many months in dense forest of Kansali (Bordering Haridwar, Dehradun and Saharanpur and perhaps Himachal too. Sudarshan Shah had with him a couple of Rajput body Guards, a couple of Harijan and a Brahmin Girijapati Bijlwan as Saryul (cook). Girijapati was not only cook but an astrologer, Mantrik for Sudarshan Shah in exile.
The descendents of Girijapati tell the stories of Sudarshan Shah spending life as anonymous. Girijapati Bijlwan and a couple of servants used to visit villages for grains and food articles. Girijapati Bijlwan used to cook food for Sudarshan Shah in bamboo pipes. First one holed Green Bamboo Pipe was filled with food grains and some water and then one hole was covered by Red Mud. Then grain filled pipe was put on burning wood. When food was cooked the pipe was cut and cooked food was offered to the Garhwal prince Sudarshan Shah on big leaves.
Later on, Prince Sudarshan Shah reached to Haridwar with the help of a Panda. Girijapati was with Sudarshan Shah in Haridwar too as trusted Saryul (Cook).
When Sudarshan Shah became Tehri Garhwal King, he offered Jagir of irrigated fields of Andufi village of Kwili Patti. However, there were conflicts between the family of Girijapati and Sudarshan Shah for a petty matter. Sudarshan Shah cancelled Jagir to family of Girijapati.

प्रार्थना पत्र यदि अधिक ऐ गेन त प्रार्थ्युं छंटाइ सबसे कनिष्ठ कर्मिक याने चपड़ासी या कनिष्ठतम लिपिक द्वारा हूंद। फिर जब प्रार्थ्युं तै इंटरव्यू याने मुखभेन्ट का वास्ता बुलाये जांद याने अभिमन्यु तैं चक्रब्यूह का फंडा मा फंसाणो कर्मकांड हूंद।

इंटरब्यू कर्मकांड मा द्वी तरां की रणनीति हूंद -

जगा जगा अवरोधक दौड़

यीं रणनीति मा अभिमन्यु याने प्रार्थी तै कौरव पार्टी याने इंटरव्यू लीण वाळ प्रार्थी तै तरह तरह से निराश करणै प्रयत्न करदन। प्रश्न का नौकरी से क्वी तालुक नि हूंद अर अधिकतर हरेक कौरव एकी तरां कु सवालिया तीर चुलांद -

कौरव 1 - तू वर्तमान जॉब किलै छुड़णु छे ?

कौरव 2 - तीन शादी किलै नि कार ?

कौरव 3 -तीन आज सफेद कमीज किलै पैर ?

कौरव 4 -तू अपण बुबा जी तै पसंद करदी या माँ तैं ?

धर्म न्यायिक अधिकरण जांच

इखमा कौरव कट्ठा ह्वेक अभिमन्यु की जांच करदन। हरेक कौरव की कोशिस (इन्टरव्यूवर ) हूंद कि अभिमन्यु (प्रार्थी ) की जांच नि हो अपितु अभिमन्यु घायल हो। कौरव अभिमन्यु तै इथगा घैल कर दींदन कि अभिमन्यु हैंक नौकरी इंटरव्यू से इ डरण मिसे जांद। असल मा यी कौरव यवा प्रार्थी का पुटुक इंटरव्यूफोबिया (इंटरब्यू का नाम से इ डर ) की बीमारी पैदा कर दींदन।

मीन बि कौरव की भूमिका निभाई अर इन सवाल पुछेन कि जबाब मीम बि नि रै ह्वाल। मीन सात मादे पांच रिजेक्ट करिन। अर द्वी सलेक्ट करिन जौंक इंटरव्यू दुसर दिन बॉसन फिर कौरव बणिक ले।

इंटरव्यू एक गंभीर काम च किन्तु वास्तव मा यु एक कर्मकांड का तरां सम्पन हूंद कि जजमानौ इख क्वी मोर या बच्चा पैदा हो, पंडीजीन घंटी इ त हिलाण अर वूं तै त दक्षिणा चएंद।

Garhwali King erected Iron wire bridges on a few Rivers at strategic places. Those iron wired bridges got destroyed before Gorkha/Gurkha invasion. There were Sanga (bridge made by Rope and wood plates) and Jhule (grass Rope Bridge) in Garhwal Kings Period for crossing rivers. Most of rope and wood plate bridges were also used in Gurkha/Gorkha Period.
In Shrinagar, for crossing Alaknanda River reaching to Ranihat, people used Jhula Bridge and Donga Boat (Round made by Bamboo or Bheemal Sticks). In Fulchatti (conference of Hinwal and Ganga) too, Donga were used for crossing Ganga between Pauri Garhwal and Tehri Garhwal. In Banghat (conference of Purvi Nayar and pashchmi Nayar Rivers), Donga were used for crossing in rainy season.
There was Sanga Bridge in Wangtoo, Himachal when Gurkha invaded Himachal region.
Gurkha also retained the system of contracting Thekedar for maintain Jhula and Donga. Those contractors used to get grains from prescribed villages and payment from river crossers. Contractors used to pay taxes to Gurkha government.

इतिहास विद्यार्थी ::: भीष्म कुकरेती

दिमित्रस I [200 -180 ? 160 ? BC ] युथिदिम का पराक्रमी पुत्र था। वह सिकंदर के समान भारत पर अधिकार का आकांक्षी था। अनुमान किया जाता है कि राज्याम्भरम्भ अशोक की मृत्यु के तीस चालीस वर्ष पश्चात हुआ।

अपने पुत्र को बाख्तार व सॉग्द की रक्षा का भार सौंपकर दिमित्रस Iअपने भ्राता अपोलोदात व सेनापति मेनान्द्र के साथ भारत विजय अभियान पर निकल पड़ा। पश्चमी तक्षशिला और पश्चमी सिंधु क्षेत्र को जीतकर वह दक्षिण सिंधु पंहुचा और वहां अपने नाम दिमित्रस के नाम से की स्थापना की। दिमित्रस I की एक सेना मेनान्द्र नेतृत्व में गांधार के पूर्व की और बढ़ी और व्यास , सतलज को पार कर मथुरा तक पंहुच गयी।
दिमित्रस I की दूसरी सेना अपोलोदात के नेतृत्व पातळ नगरी को जीतकर सौराष्ट्र से होती हुयी भरुकच्छ तक पंहुच गयी। भरुकच्छ को राजधानी बनाई।
पश्चमी भारत के बड़े भूभाग पर अधिकार के बाद मगध विजय की योजना बनाई।
सेना ने वर्तमान चित्तौड़ के नजदीक माध्यमिका नगरी को जीतकर पाटलिपुत्र की और प्रस्थान किया
सेना ने मथुरा को जीतकर पूर्व की ओर पांचाल , साकेत व काशी को जीतकर पाटलिपुत्र पर आक्रमण कर दिया।
यवन आक्रमणों का वर्णन पतांजलि /पंतजलि महाभाष्य , हरिवंश , युग पुराण , मार्कण्डेय पुराण , गार्गी संहिता में भी उल्लेख है।
कुछ नरेशों ने प्रतिरोध किया कुछ नरेश प्रतिरोध ना कर सके। मगध का राजा भागकर जंगलों में छुप गया था।
यवन सेना संख्या में अधिक थी व युद्ध सामग्री व युद्ध परवहन तंत्र में विकसित थी। भारत में जैन व बौद्ध संस्कृति के कारण युद्ध विज्ञान में विकास लगभग बंद ही था तो यवन सेना को जीतना सरल था।
इसी दौरान यवन में अन्य यवन समान्तों ने दिमित्रस के राज्य पर अधिकार कर लिया। अपने साम्राज्य को बचाने में दिमित्रस की मृत्यु हुयी (160 या 180 BC )
भारत में भी यवन अधिकारी आपस में लड़ बैठे और पांचाल[उत्तर यमुना दोआब , सहारनपुर व कुछ भाग उत्तराखंड ] व अन्य मध्य देस के भाग से यवन अधिकार समाप्त हो गया।

अप्वॉन्टमेंट लेटर वास्तव मा सकारात्मक हुण चयेंद किन्तु हमर टैम पर अप्वाइंटमेंट लेटर वास्तव मा नकारात्मक ही हूंद छा। शायद अब सकारात्मक नियुक्ति पत्र मिलदा होला मि नि जाणदु। पर नियुक्ति पत्र मा आस जगाये जाण चयेंद वा आस नियुक्ति पत्रु मा नि हूंद।

हरेक कम्पनी रुणि रौंदि कि हमर क्रमिक इन्नोवेटिव नि छन , नवप्रवर्तक नि छन , मौलिक सोच का समर्थक नि छन। अब जब नियुक्ति पत्र मा लिखे इ नि जाव कि हम तुम से इन्नोवेसन की आस करदां तो संस्थान मा नई सोच कखन आलि ? उल्टां नियुक्ति पत्र मा लिख्युं रौंद - देख बै कार्मिक ! हम त्वै तै गधा समजदा तो गधा जन अपर संचालक /सुपरवाइजर की आज्ञा पाल करता जा। यदि तीन गधापंथी छोड़िक अपण बॉस की अवज्ञा कार तो तेरी नौकरी खतम करे जाली।

नियुक्ति पत्रु मा इन नि लिख्युं रौंद कि तुम तै अनुशासन मा रौण चयेंद बल्कि लिख्युं रौंद कि यदि तू अनुशासन मा नि रैली तो त्वे पर अनुशासनत्मक कार्यवाही होली। नियुक्ति पत्र वास्तव मा अभ्यार्थी तै सिखांद कि तू यदि भेड़ /ढिबर जन व्यवहार करिल त कम्पनी मा खै कमै सकदी अर यदि तीन इना उना द्याख तो त्यार हतुं मा टर्मिनसन लेटर पकड़ाए जालु। नियुक्ति पत्र का मजमून हूंद कि -हे ! कर्मिक यदि तू अनवश्यक निलंबन नि चांदी तो बण्यां बुण्या बाटु पर ही हिट।

नियुक्ति पत्र का हरेक क्लाउज मा सकारात्मक वाक्यों का बनिस्पत नेगेटिव /नकारात्मक वाक्यों की अधिकता हूंदी याने कार्मिक तै नकारात्मक बणाणै प्रक्रिया नियुक्ति पत्र से शुरू ह्वे जांद।

उन त मालिक बुल्दु बल कर्मिक म्यार परिवार च पर नियुक्ति पत्र की इबारत बथांदि कि कर्मिक एक अविश्सनीय अर दुसर ब्रह्माण्ड कु जीव च अर वै तै बांधिक बंधक बणान आवश्यक च।

असल मा नियुक्ति पत्र मा कम्पनी का लीगल बेनिफिट्स का ही ख़याल रखे जांद कि यदि कम्पनी लीगली कखि फंस जावो तो नियुक्ति पत्र का बल पर कंपनी पर आंच नि आवो।

Commercial Food Grains of Garhwal and Kumaon in Gurkha/Gorkha period

Commonly, people used to take food grains as –different millets, and coarse grains. Dr Dabral mentions Maize too. However, this author's opinion is that Maize and Amaranth would have not been so popular by that time. Besides food grains, people used to depend on forest produces as bark, roots, shoots and leaves, seeds buds etc. People used to boil the mentioned forest items with Chanch/Butter Milk or other curry materials.
People used to grow rice and wheat for paying tax. Taxes were taken in money and as well by grains.
People used to take wheat rice and other cash crops in Kandi/bamboo Baskets, on horses and used to travel more than forty fifty miles to sell such items. People used to sell those items in Wholesale Markets as-Bhabhr , Nazibabad, Chattis of pilgrim highways, fairs. People used to get one rupee for twenty five Ser Wheat (around 25 Kilos) in Haridwar.
In Ruhelkhand Mandi (Nazibabad), seller used to get one rupee for twenty Five Ser Wheat.
The rate of rice in Badrinath was one third rupee for two and half Ser rice and one rupee for Seven Ser Rice.
In Almora, the rate of 32 Ser Wheat was one Farukhabadi rupee. In interior of Garhwal, the rate of 100 Ser of Wheat was one rupee. The Gurkha administrators used to apply tactics not to increase rate for grains.
The Salan people used to visit Nazibabad, Bhabhar, Haridwar, and Dehradun to sell their grains. The farmers of Upper Garhwal used to sell grains to Bhotiya traders. Bhotiya Traders used to sell grains in Tibet and used bring salt to sell in Garhwal.

आज ग्लोब्लाइजेसन का समय पर बि ट्रेनिंग वास्तव माँ एक बीमारी माने जांद अर ट्रेनिंग तै ऐसेट बिल्डिंग प्रोसेस नि माने जांद अपितु बीमारी भगाणो बान संसाधनुं नुकसान [लौस इन रिसोर्सेस ] माने जांद।

अधिकतर अलग अलग विभागुं बान ट्रेनिंग दीणो दृस्टि अलग हूंद। जनकि प्रोडक्सन , टेक्नीकल अर सेल्स वाळु तै ट्रेनिंग मार बांधिक दीणी पड़द। बकै विभागुं मा ट्रेनिंग की आवश्यकता समजे इ नि जांद।

उन अधिसंख्य कम्पन्यूँ मा ट्रेनिंग मैनुअल रौंद च पर वे ट्रेनिंग मैनुअल की वै इ कीमत अर भतियाभन्द हूंद जन अपण पुरखों सराद दीणो हूंद। जन सालाना सराद मृतकों तै याद करणो बान नि हूंद अपितु दुनिया दिखाणो एक कर्मकांड हूंद उनि ट्रेनिंग मैनुअल कु हर्श हूंद।

ट्रेनिंग मैनुअल की अहमियत इथगा इ च कि यु मैनुअल वै ड्रावर मा रखे जांद जै ड्रावर तै कदाचित ही खोले जांद याने धूल खांदि फाइलु बीच ट्रेनिंग मैनुअल पड्यु मिल्द।

चूँकि मैनेजरों तै भूतकाल मा सही पद्धति से ट्रेनिंग नि हूंदी अर यि मैनेजर अपण मेहनत या यस बॉस वळ गुण से मैनेजर बण जांदन तो यूंक सुचण हूंद कि -हम तै कैन सिखाइ ? जब बगैर ट्रेनिंग का हम मैनेजर बण सकदां तो हौर बि अफिक सीख ल्याल। इन संस्थानों मा ट्रेनिंग गाळी माने जांद।

एकलब्य सिद्धांत

ट्रेनिंग मा खासकर सेल वळु तै हरेक विभाग से परिचित हूणों उदेस्य से हरेक विभाग मा भिजे जांद। अर हरेक विभाग मा एकाद बगैर कामक कर्मिक हूंदी छन। जब बि ट्रेनिंग लीणो क्वी नया बकरा याने कर्मिक आये तो ये खुंड कर्मिक तै ट्रेनिंग दीणो काम मिल जांद। अवस्य ही यु कर्मिक निरास कर्मिक ही हूंद तो यु कर्मिक नया कर्मिक का मन मा कम्पनी का प्रति इतना निरासा डाळि दींदु कि नया कर्मिक अपण भाग्य तै गाळी दीण शुरू कर दींदु कि कैं कम्पनी मा ऐ ग्यों।

म्यार ट्रेनिंग का कुछ अनुभव

मेरी बि सेल्स मा मर्फी मा ट्रेनिंग ह्वे छे। मर्फी तब अफिक बिक जांद छौ। अधिक मारामारी नि छे।

पैलाक दिन तो ऑफिस मा अलग अलग विभाग का लोगुं से परिचय ह्वे दुसर दिन एक में से एक मैना अधिक अनुभवी सेल्समैन का दगड़ भिजे गे। वैन मि तै सेल्समैनशिप तो नि सिखाइ पर इन अवश्य सिखाइ कि ट्रैवल बिल मा टीए डीए मा कन हेराफेरी करण। सरा दिन वु मि तै सिखाणु राइ कि सेल्समैन की असली कमाई टीए डीए की हेराफेरी से हूंद।

तिसर दिन मि तै सर्विस मैनेजर रेडिओ डीलरों परिचय का वास्ता ली गे। बारा बजि से पैल तीन डीलरूं से कबड्डी जन -छू छू जन परिचय करैक उ सर्विस मैनेजर मि तै सिनेमा दिखाणो ली गे कि बारा से तीन भौत गर्मी हूंद तो जरा वातानुकूलित हॉल का मजा लिए जावो।

म्यार बॉसन मि तै पूछ बि नि छौ कि मीन कन ट्रेनिंग ले।

ट्रेनिंग शब्द एक अच्छु शब्द च पर यदि ट्रेनर ही ट्रेनिंग दीण नि जाणल तो वीं ट्रेनिंग का क्या ह्वाल।

एक दै मीन नया सेल्स ट्रेनी तै ट्रेनिंग का वास्ता पुरण सेल्स मैन का साथ मार्किट भ्याज अर मि अफु हैदराबाद टूर पर चलि ग्यों । द्वी तीन हफ्ता तक तो मीम क्वी सूचना नि आई किन्तु बाद मा पता चौल कि पुरण सेल्समैन नया सेल्स ट्रेनी का साथ मार्केट नि गे बस अपितु पुरण सेल्समैनन वै तै अपण विजिटिंग कार्ड देन अर हरेक दुकान दार का टेबल मा कांच का अंदर लगाणो हिदायत दे दे।

मीन जब सेल्स ट्रेनी तै गोडाउन क्लर्क बणै दे !

मीन एक दै एक सेल्स ट्रेनी भर्ती कौर अर ट्रेनिंग का वास्ता वै तै गोडाउन भ्याज। सेल्स वाळ तै माल परिवहन का ज्ञान आवश्यक हूंद तो अधिकतर कंपन्यूँ मा सेल्स वळ तै गोडाउन (जू ऑफिस से कई मील दूर हूंदन ) अवश्य भिजे जांद। वै सेल्स ट्रेनीन उत्साह मा ऐक गोडाउन मा सुधार का वास्ता तीन पेज की रिपोर्ट मि तै दिखाइ। मि रिपोर्ट से प्रभावित ह्वे ग्यों। तिसर दिन मीन गोडाउन कीपर बुलाइ अर वै तै वा रिपोर्ट दिखाइ। गोडाउन कीपर बि रिपोर्ट से प्रभावित ह्वे गे। हम दुयुंन वै सेल्स ट्रेनी तै मोटिवेट कार अर वै तै गोडाउन मा स्टोर क्लर्क बणै दे। अब उ एक बड़ी कम्पनी मा गोडाउन कीपर च।

नया कार्मिक का बि सपना हूंदन

कुछ समय पैलाक इ बात छन। मीन एक तरो ताजा एमबीए मुंबई ब्रांच मा ले। अपण ब्रांच मैनेजर का समिण मीन वै तै लोहार चाल मुंबई मार्किट भ्याज। लोहार चाल किचेन यूटेंसिल्स का भौत बड़ो व्होलसेल व रिटेल मार्केट च। दुसर दिन मीन वै एमबीए तै पूछ कि कन राइ तेरो अनुभव ?

वै युवा सेलमैनान उत्तर दे - अर आपन मि तै दुकानदारों पास भ्याज ना कि रिटेलर्स का पास।

वैन एमबीए की किताबुं मा रिटेलर्स का अर्थ मॉल या डिपार्टमेंटल स्टोर्स समझ ना कि दुकानदार।

ट्रेंनिंग एक गंवहिर विषय च पर अबि बि भारत मा ट्रेनिंग एक बीमारी इ समजे जांद।

Kumaoni and Garhwali farmers needed cash crops for various purposes especially for salt, Gud, clothing, wage payment and tax payment. However, neither Garhwali King nor Gurkha paid attention on smooth trade facilities that cash crop is sold or exported.
Poppy was grown in Bhagirathi Valley of Tehri –Uttarkashi Garhwal. Farmers used to produce Opium by poppy seeds. The Opium of Bhatwadi region was called the Best Opium. Farmers also eat opium raw seeds and used as spice too.
Hemp was another cash crop that British Factory of Kahsipur used to buy and the hemp clothing was also bought by Sadhis in Pilgrim Raods.
Cotton was grown in Bhagirathi Valley and Salan Region. Cotton was used for local demand only. Cotton was always imported in Garhwal and Kumaon.
Forest produces was also sold for export but mainly wood.
Turmeric, Ginger was farmed for export or cash crop too.
Dr Dabral mentions that Red Chilies were also produced for cash crop. Vasco da-Gama is called who brought Red Chilly in India in 1598. No historical details are available how Chilies reached to Garhwal, Kumaon and when Chilies became household products. British did experimentations on growing such crops of American Origins as Amaranths, Groundnuts, Potato and Chilies etc.

बाख़्तरी -यूनानी राजाओं में मेनान्द्र अथवा मिलिंद का नाम भारत में बहुत प्रसिद्ध है। बौद्ध धर्मी साहित्यकारों ने मेनान्द्र पर रोचक प्रकाश डाला है [मिलिंद पन्हा ).
विद्वानो का मत है कि मेनान्द्र अथवा मिलिंद की राजधानी सकाल में थी (सियालकोट ) दिमित्रस Iके पश्चमी भाग पर युक्रादित ने अधिकार कर लिया था।
मेनान्द्र का अफगानिस्तान , पंजाब , राजस्थान , काठियावाड़ , भरुच (भरुकच्छ ) था और पूर्व में हिमाचल प्रदेश, उत्तराखंड , रुहेलखण्ड , यमुना -गंगा दोआब , मथुरा आगरा तक फैला था।
मेनान्द्र के सिक्के शिमला जिले के सबाथु , रामपुर , मथुरा और आगरा के पास भूतेश्वर में मिले हैं।
स्त्रावो के अनुसार मेनान्द्र/Menander ने सिकंदर सी अधिक भारतीय भूभाग पर अधिकार किया। उसने अपने राज्य की सीमा व्यास नदी से इसमस नदी तक विस्तार किया था । इसमस नदी की पहचान कुमाऊं से रुहेलखण्ड-कन्नौज तक भने वाली तक काली नदी (इक्षुमती या इच्छुमति ) से की जाती है।

मेनान्द्र/Menander का राज्यविधि समय

विद्वानों ने मेनान्द्र/Menanderकी राज्यविधि समय 175 - 90 BC के मध्य निर्धारित किया है -
बौन गुटस्मिद -175 BC
लामोत - 163 -150 BC
स्मिथ - 160 -140 BC
रैप्सन - 160 BC
नारायण -155 -130 BC
डी सी सरकार - 115 -90 BC

अब तक पांचाल के 12 से अधिक राजाओं के सिक्के प्राप्त हो चुके हैं अतः मेनान्द्र/Menander का पांचाल पर अधिक दिनों तक अधिकार नही रहा होगा।
मेनान्द्र/Menander की मृत्यु व मृत्यु समय पर विद्वानो के अलग अलग विचार हैं। कुछ कहते हैं कि मेनान्द्र/Menander की मृत्यु बैक्ट्रिया सामंतो से युद्ध के समय हुयी। कुछ कहते हैं कि पाटलिपुत्र पुष्यमित्र ने जब साकल पर आक्रमण किया तब मेनान्द्र/Menander की मृत्यु हुयी। यूनानी लखकों के अनुसार मेनान्द्र/Menander की मृत्यु अपने साम्राज्य की रक्षा करते हुयी।
