   British Army capturing Nahan, Himachal

Nepalese Anglo War with   Reference to Gurkha Rule over Uttarakhand & Himachal -84
History of Gorkha /Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -200
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -726

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

After capturing Dehradun Garhwal, British decided for capturing Nahan and other regions of Himachal.
Colonel Maubi marched with army from Dehradun towards Nahan on 5th December 1814. Through Kheda valley, his troop reached to Saharanpur region. On 19th December 1814, his troop camped in Himachal seven mile far away from Nahan. Major General Martindale (in place of Gillespie) reached there for commanding Third battalion. Nahan city was at the height of 3000 Feet. From west of Kali River, the Nepalese commanders as Bamshah, Balbhadra, Ranjor and Amar Singh Thapa ran away from their base camps and hide in unknown places in Hilly regions. Their strategy was to defend British army at Higher altitude. Amar Singh Thapa advised Ranjor to take shelter at Jaithok Garhi (Fort) that was in north to Nahan and at higher altitude than Nahan.
British army captured Nahan on 24th December 1814 without any resistance from Nepalese Army.

Fighting Spirit of Gurkha Commander Ranjor

Nepalese Anglo War with   Reference to Gurkha Rule over Uttarakhand & Himachal -86
History of Gorkha /Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -202
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -728

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Before, British started campaign against Nepal, Ranjor was also war against British as his father was. However, when British started attacking on Gurkha, Ranjor was ready to fight till end. He was ready to sacrifice his life for his King and Country. Ranjor ignored the advice of Nepal King for friendly accord with British. Ranjor was waiting for British army at Jaithok Garhi. Ranjor also invited Balbhadra for coming to Jaithok Fort. Ranjor had communication lines with the Gurkha officials in Shrinagar, Almora and Nepal through Hill path on Nort Garhwal. There was no communication problem for communicating with Amar Singh Thapa in west.
After British capturing Doon valley, the  Kamin (heads ) of Kalsi, Kangar and Palwa villages were inclined towards British army and Shishram etc were in contact with those Kamin. Ranjor wrote a letter to Kangar village chief and cautioned him – "Our army is just to reach from Shrinagar and Kumoan. You left us due to influence from Shishram. However, within 8-10 days, our army led by Balbhadra will reach to Yamuna Port. You meet Balbhadra and support us. Otherwise we shall kill your people and will take away your women. Send 25 monds of Lead to us for making gun powder)."
Ranjor wrote letter to Chief of Palwa," Send immediately tax.If you listen SHishram and when our army would reach to palwa we shall kill all people who are supporting Shishram. Don't allow Shishram to Palwa. The person who will kill Shishram or would catch him we shall reward the person. Send tax and food grains to Jaithak. We shall offer important information to people who come with tax and food grains."
There were 1500 soldiers with Jaithok Gadhi . Gurkha soldiers were lesser than local fighters.  From Jaithok, Ranjor and his soldiers could easily watch on the activities of British army in Nahan. There were three four water sources nearby Jaithok Fort. Ranjor used to call food grains and other materials from nearby villages forcibly.

There was small fort or Garhi of 12x8 Meters in Jaithok. Garhi was built by mud and gray Hill stones. Jaithok was the meeting place of two Hills at lower level (Khal). There were two separate roads in each hill for reaching Jaithok /Jaithak Khal. Hastings had already studied important hill Garhis of Himachal, Garhwal and Kumaon. Hastings advised his army for surrounding Jaithok Garhi. There was no water source in Jaithok Garhi and soldiers of Garhi had to come down for water to four water sources. By capturing the water sources it was easy to compel enemy for surrender.
However, Martindale decided for firing guns from two hills. On 26th December Night 1814, Martindale sent army of 800 solders led by Ludlow   from left hill and 500 soldiers led by William Richards through right hill. Both battalions had canons of 6 ponds and other advance canons. Those canons were reached on hills through elephants. Both the battalions were supposed to reach on hills by down. The path of Richards was long and road for Ludlow was shorter.
Ludlow reached at 8Am morning to the decided site. He found a hut with wood boundaries (Bara) there. His army also encountered three Bara (hut with fence) before reaching to hill. The British army fired on the soldiers of Bara. Informer informed that there were Gurkha soldiers trying to reach at fourth Bara .Guns and ammunition were not with soldiers and were far behind. Ludlow decided to attack on those Gurkha soldiers before them reaching to Bara.  Ludlow soldiers fired on Gurkha soldiers and easily captured fourth Bara. Ludlow was advised to wait for William Richard troop. However, due to insistence of soldiers Ludlow advanced his march and wished for capturing fifth Bara.
Gurkha soldiers allowed British army for reaching to fourth Bara. As soon as British army of 400 soldiers under Ludlow reached to fourth bara, Gurkha soldiers attacked suddenly on British army. Each Gurkha soldiers was shouting 'Hirkai Deu –Kill them'. Gurkha soldiers were habitual of hills war and British soldiers were not habitual for fighting on hill roads. Gurkha started killing British soldiers by Khukri. British soldiers started running back. Ludlow also ran back. There was casualty of 31 European soldiers and 120 Indian soldiers. By 10AM Ludlow army reached to Nahan with shameful defeat.

Major Richards troop had to walk over 16 miles to the decided place. Richards troop reached at bottom of North hill at 8AM. From hill bottom the army had to go up hill. Richards ordered his troop for rest for two hours. When Richards troop reached at hill top (north Stage) they could not find any sign of Ludlow troop (South Stage). By then the Ludlow battalion escaped. The s Gurkha soldiers started playing drums (Dhol) around 1 PM. The Ranjor Thapa army started for attacking on British army led by Major Richards.  British soldiers fired guns on Gurkha soldiers, Gurkha soldiers were scattered and they hid below stones or bushes. Gurkha soldiers fired then and now. There was no shadow for Richards soldiers. At 4Pm, British  came to know that the bulls carrying guns, canons lost the ways and Gurkha soldiers looted the ammunition on bullocks by killing British soldiers. Richards wrote to Major General Martindell for soliciting the reinforce. However, Martindell was of opinion that without Ludlow, Richards soldiers could not win Gurkha and he did not send more troops and ammunition for Richards. Martindell ordered Richards for coming back.
Before sun set, Gurkha soldiers attacked nine times on British troop. Every time British fired guns on Gurkha. Richards ordered soldiers for collecting stones.  By 7 PM, Richards army was at that place only. Gurkha could kill only around 20 -30 British army soldiers. There was no gun powder left with British army. Richards had to return to Nahan. It was decided to climb down to hill bottom from Hill through a narrow path (Gurbato).  It was necessary that a defense was also set up for the soldiers coming down from hill. Lieutenant Thacker and light infantry took responsibility to defend the army coming down to hill bottom. Young Thacker had 200 Indian soldiers, William Wilson, two European officers. British army soldiers started coming down on moon light. The soldiers under Thacker could defend from 1500 Gurkha soldiers for half an hour. Gurkha fired on Thacker and he died instantly.  Wilson got injured and his one thigh was burst by Gun fire of Gurkha.  British army soldiers ran away from defensive position.  In that second British attack on Jaithok/Jaithak, there was loss of 76 solders, three officers and 306 soldiers were injured.
