              Third British Attack on Khalanga/Nalapani Fort -1

            John Premble (Invasion of Nepal) offered details of third attack on Khalanga/Nalapani Gadhi by British army.
   For three weeks, Colonel Mawbey waited for bigger canons supply from Delhi. Bigger canons reached to Doon Camp on 24th November. Two light infantry companies, Carpenter battalion reached to camp with four canons of eighteen pounds, two mortars of eight inches too. Colonel Mawbey sent a couple of companies for surrounding Nalapani fort from all sides that Gurkha soldiers don't run away from territory.  Mawbey sent Ludly to Tharapani hill with soldiers. Major Baldock reached from right side of Tharapani. Captain Buck was sent to Lakhend and Captain Caulmart was sent to Asthal.
   That time, British army took another rout for surrounding Nalapani Fort. British army marched through south east of Saung valley (Gdhera). That rout was long and more difficult terrain. However, Gurkha could not watch on the new rout. Army reached slowly , slowly to a small hill (Tappad) one mile and south east of the Nalapani fort. By difficulty soldiers took the two twelve pound canons and four eighteen pound canons in night to the place 250 meter away from fort. By noon of 27th November, British soldiers fired canons on the fort wall and fort wall broke down.
  Major Inglebai   reached near the damaged wall and was just to enter inside but got injured and came back. Captain Parker reached to the wall and found that the hole was at higher height. By peering from the hole it was found that below the hole there was ditch and Gurkha were ready with swords to cut the entrants. The soldiers who were on wall or wall of the hole were killed by Gurkha soldiers. Lieutenant Herington was killed by a gun fire on his back by Gurkha gun man. Gurkha were answering British attack by stones, arrows and gun fires,. British army started firing on Gurkha inside the hole.
Captain John Campbell was dead due to arrow attack from Gurkha. The third attack also was failure attack. Lieutenant Laxford was also injured.  Muslim soldiers got scared by failure.
  The soldiers of 53 Battalion were not cowered but were inactive or sluggish before Gurkha.  Four European officers were killed and seven officers and 33 soldiers were killed and 636 injured (including 12 sergeants and three band masters). 184 Privates of 53th Battalions, either were injured or disappeared. Totally 864 soldiers were injured in third attack.
    Only 250 Gurkha soldiers were alive in Gurkha camp inside Nalapani fort.
On 28th November, Balbhadra Kunwar ordered to take dead bodies of British army. Thirteen dead bodied were taken inside the fort. The body of dead Hairngton was beheaded.

           Eden Vansittart in Notes on Nepal page 15, describes a story about a great Gurkha soldier of Khalanga/Nalapani battle. Nepali Lyricist Bal Krishna Sharma and music composer Shiv Shankar created a musical drama 'Nalapanima' (In Nalapani) on this story.
       The British soldiers were firing guns and canons on the Nalapani fort. There was danger of Gurkhas being killed inside due to debris. A soldier Gurkha soldier came out of Fort with waving his empty hands. British stopped firing. The face of Gurkha soldier was severely injured. The wounded soldier wanted help from British soldiers. British soldiers did aid him first aid for his injury. Gurkha knew the importance of first aid in battle. After taking first aid the Gurkha soldier desired to go back into fort and fight with British army and refused to enter into British army. British soldiers appreciated the devotion of Gurkha for his country.

आज अंख्यों मा रूप कैको जोन्याळी सी छाये ,
फेर बाडळी बणीक कुई आज मैं मू -सी आये।
ऐंन आँसुन भीजीं कैकी द्वी आंखी वो गीली ,
फ्यूंळी की पाँखुड़ी सी , मुखड़ी स्या कैकी पीली।
फफरांदा होंठ ऐन वो लाज से जना झुक्यां ,
प्यार का वो बोल ऐन मुख मा ही रुक्यां।
सुखी गाड -सी मेरी जळी जिकुड़ी ऐंच ,
सौंण की रोंदेड़ कुयेड़ी या कैन बुलाये ?
डूबी गैन अँध्यारा मा डांडी-काँठी भरेण लैगे उदासी ,
मेरी ही तरौं लटकिगे पीठ फेरीक सूरज सो प्रवासी।
फूलूं की पंखुड्यों की सेज मा देख बथौं यो ओंगण लैगे ,
निराशेक कैकी जाग मा थकीक विचारी जोन स्यैगे।
सुपिनों मा खोयेगी जिकुड़ी स्यां स्यां कर्दी गाड की ,
अगास की अंग्वाळ मा सर्किगे धरती ब्यौली सी लाड की।
जिंदगी छळेन्दी औणी छ जनो ओडार को -सी घाम।,
मैं कू तेरी याद लीक कनी या अँध्यारी रात आये।

2015 का बिहार विधान सभा चुनाव मा भारतीय जनता पार्टी चित्त ह्वे गे , मुर्दार ह्वे गे , नितीश -लालू अर पप्पू की तिकड़ीन भाजपा तै धूळ चटै  दे। परसि भाजपा की चुनाव समीक्षा ना बल्कण मा नरेंद्र मोदी -आरएसएस बचाओ बैठक ह्वे।  म्यार जासूस बि वीं नरेंद्र मोदी -भागवत  बचाओ बैठक मा छौ।  म्यार जासूसन बैठक मा क्या ह्वे की आंतरिक रिपोर्ट इन दे -

एक भाजपा सदस्य -हमारी हार का पैथर मुलयम सिंह की नाकामयाबी  जुम्मेवार च।

साक्षी महाराज - हाँ हाँ।  अवश्य ही मुलायम सिंह की नाकामयाबी ही सब जगा हम तै हरांदी।  अरे यु मुल्ला मुलायम मुसलमानो का वोट नि काट साक।  फोकट मा ये तै मुल्ला कु तगमा मिल्युं च। मुलायम सिंग मुसलामनों बोट  नि पाण से हम बिहार चुनाव हारों।  बस जी मीटिंग बर्खास्त कारो।  हम तै असली कारण पता चल गे।

शाह नवाज - अजी मुलायम सिंग की नाकामयाबी मुख्य कारण नी च अपितु मुसलमानो का खसम ख़ास अकबरुद्दीन ओवासी की नाकामयाबी भी तो भाजपा का हार का कारण च।

नजमा इ हेपतुल्ला -जी यु ठीक च। सरा तोहमत मुल्ला मुलायम अर ओवैसी पर लगै द्यावो तो प्रधान मंत्री अर अमित शाह अफिक बच जाला।

जेटली - मि तै लगणु च साहित्यकारोंन बिहार्युं तै चेतवानी दे होलि कि यदि भाजपा जीती जाली तो हम सब अपण तगमा , इनाम किताब टीवी चैनलों तै वापस कर द्योला।
स्मिति ईरानी - आपक बात मा दम च।  तो बस ह्वे गे चिंतन कि बिहार्युंन साहित्यकार अपण इनाम टीवी चैनलों तै नि वापस कारन का कारण भाजपा तै वोट नि दे।

गिरिराज सिंह - नही पाकिस्तानी मीडिया की मेहरबानी से हम बिहार का चुनाव हारवां।

सुषमा स्वराज - ठीक च मि या बात यूएनओ मा बि उठान्दु कि पाकिस्तानी मीडिया भारत का घरेलू मुद्दों मा घाल मेल करणु च।

उदित राज - अजी जतिन राम मांझी, कुशवाहा  अर रामविलास पासवान दलित वोट नि दिलै सकिन । असली कारण जतिन राम मांझी, कुशवाहा  अर रामविलास पासवान की नाकामयाबी च।

संविद पात्रा - तो मि टीवी चैनलों मा अपण हार का ठीकरा जतिन राम मांझी, कुशवाहा  अर रामविलास पासवान पर फोड़ द्योलु।

नरेंद्र कोहली - इखमा शर्माणै बात क्या च ? हमेशा ही भैंस का गुस्सा मकड़ा पर ही निकाळे जांद।  बनाओ जतिन राम मांझी, कुशवाहा  अर रामविलास पासवान तै बलि का भैंसा।

संगीत सोम - अजी हम तै अपण चुनाव चिन्ह 'गौड़ी' करण चयेंद छौ।  गाय माता अवश्य ही हमारी नय्या पार लगै सकदी छे।  पर मेरी बात पर सिवाय मीडिया का क्वी ध्यान ही नि दींदु।

कटिहार  - चुप्प।  ना तो राम नाम ना ही गाय नाम।  यी द्वी नाम मेन टैम पर धोखा दे दींदन।

संविद पात्रा - अरे इन बताओ कि हम प्रवक्ताओं तै चुनाव हारणो क्या क्या कारण दीणन ?

नरेंद्र कोहली - जु जु कारण 2014 का लोकसभा चुनाव मा कॉंग्रेस का हार का कारण छन या कॉंग्रेसन जु बेतुका कारण बतैन वी कारण हम बि बतौला।

एक भाजपाई का प्रवेश - हम तै कारण बताणो जरूरत नी च।  शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा , भोला सिंह प्रेस कोन्फेरेंस करण ही वाळ छन।

दुसर भाजपाई का प्रवेश - आडवाणी जी , मुरली मनोहर जोशी जी आदि सब चुपके से हार का असली कारणों की सूची प्रेस तै दीण वाळ छन।

सब (उठद ) फिर ठीक च।  हम तै कुछ सुचणो जरूरत नी च।

  When that soldier returned back to Garhi, British army again started firing guns and canons on Garhi. By evening of 29th November, east wall of Garhi /Fort was completely damaged. Now, army stopped firing on east wall. It was decided that the canons would be used for damaging south wall of fort. There were gun and canon firing at 2 AM night. Captain Buck was stationed at water source. The inhabitants of fort used to come for taking water at that source. When Gurkha people came for fetching water or taking water British army fired on them and there was firing from both the end. Gurkha returned without taking water.
    There was silent for one hour in night . At 3 Am, Gurkha army came out of Garhi and marched towards south. This time Gurkha soldiers were going towards rivulets by taking help of bushes. British army fired on them. Out of 300 soldiers, only 70 or 73 soldiers could flee from that area and others were killed.
Those seventy soldiers did not ask for asylum from British. Their leader Balbhadra was with them
As per folk stories , Balbhadra ( Levanidas) cried and told that it was not possible to be in Garhi and he was leaving Garhi by his own wish. Balbhadra and his soldiers were thirsty. They did not care and marched forward without caring firing from British army. Soldiers were having either naked swords or guns. Balbhadra was leading them from front. He disappeared in dark.

धृतराष्ट्र - संजय ! आज कुरुक्षेत्र युद्ध का अठों दिन खतम ह्वे गे।  म्यार पुत्रों न युद्ध मा क्या पाई , क्या खोई की कमेंट्री तो सुणा।

संजय -महाराज ! दिख्युं आँख क्या दिखण अर तप्युं घाम क्या तपण ?

धृतराष्ट्र - मतलब आज बि दुर्योधन की सेना जीत नी च।

संजय -ना माराज ! उल्टां आज कौरव सेना भौत बुरी तरां से हारी।  इथगा करारी हार कि भीष्म पितामह अर द्रोणाचार्य जन जिताऊ जोधा बि शरमाणा छन।

धृतराष्ट्र - अब तो स्याम ह्वे गे।  हमर सेनापति लोग अपण शिविर मा क्या करणा छन ? जरा अपण दूरदर्शी नजर से मि तै बतादी।

संजय -महाराज नि सूणो बल कौरव शिविर मा क्या हूणु च।

धृतराष्ट्र - उंह ! यथार्थ तै सुणण अर भुगतण मेरी नियति च।  तू सच बता।
संजय -हार का बाद जु हूंद ऊनि कौरव शिविर मा बि हूणु च।

धृतराष्ट्र - क्या मतलब ? क्या कौरव सेनापति हार का इल्जाम एक हैंक पर लगाणा छन ? हार का ठीकरा एक दुसर की बेज्जती करणो बान प्रयोग करणा छन ?

संजय -हाँ माराज। हार से लथपथ , बेज्जत ह्वेका   अति क्रोध मा सम्राट दुर्योधन ,अंगद राज कर्ण अर गुरु पुत्र अश्वथामा पितामह भीष्म का शिविर मा गेन जख गुरु द्रोणाचार्य अर शल्य बि उपस्थित था।

धृतराष्ट्र - फिर उख क्या  क्या वार्तालाप ह्वे ? सच सच बताओ दूरदर्शी संजय।

संजय -ल्या हार का बाद भीष्म का शिविर का आंख्युं दिख्युं हाल क्या कुहाल द्याखो।

दुर्योधन , कर्ण अर अश्वथामा (अति क्रोध मा एक साथ ) - पितामह भीष्म अर गुरु द्रोणाचार्य ! आठ दिनों की हार का बाद आप क्या करणा छंवां ?

द्रोणाचार्य - हम तिनि हार का कारणों की सूक्ष्म समीक्षा करणा छंवां।

कर्ण (अट्टहास अर बेज्जती करदारी भाषा मा ) - वाह ! जु सेनापति हार का असली कारण छन , जौंकी जईं -बितीं रणनीति हार का कारण च , जौंकी बकबास नीति से कौरव सेना हार वी कौरव सेना का हार का कारणों की समीक्षा करणा छन ? आप दुयुं तैं सेनाध्यक्ष अर सेनापति पद छुड़ण चयेंद।

शल्य - कर्ण ! बकबास बंद।

अश्वथामा - इकमा राधेय  कर्ण क्या गलत बुलणा छन ? हार ह्वे तो सेनाध्यक्ष अर सेनापति तै पद छुड़न ही चयेंद।

शल्य -  गुरु अश्वथामा ! पता च कि ना कि गुरु द्रोणाचार्य तुमर पिताश्री छन ?

अश्वथामा - राजकरणी मा जीत पिता -पुत्र का संबंधों से अधिक महत्वपूर्ण हूंद।

कर्ण -सम्राट दुर्योधन ! हार का कारण से तुम अब्याकि अबि पितामह भीष्म अर गुरु द्रोणाचार्य तैं पदविहीन कारो।

शल्य - वाह बाप ना मारे मेंढकी अर पुत्तर का नाम कमाल !

कर्ण -क्या मतलब ?

शल्य - जब से तू नराधम , वर्णशंकर दुर्योधन का साथ ऐ तब से आज तक पता च तू  तीन दै वृहद युद्ध हारी , दस दै मध्य युद्ध हारी अर भौत दै धनुर्धारी अर्जुन का डौरन युद्धस्थल से भागिक ऐ।  क्या सम्राट दुर्योधनन त्वे तै राजसभा से भैर कार ?

अश्वथामा - शल्य जी ! भूतकाल की बात से आज का युद्ध का संबंध नी च।  आज यी द्वी महारथी , अतिरथी पराजयी योद्धा छन तो यूँ तैं अपण पद छुडन ही चयेंद।

शल्य - नराधमों ! जब क्वी समूह -समाज हारदो च त वै समूह का सदस्यों मा और अधिक मेलमिलाप हूण चयेंद , एक दुसर से अधिक सौहार्द बढ़ाण चयेंद , एक हैंक से कंधा से कंधा मिलैक काम करण चयेंद , सामूहिक यश -अपयश का भागीदार बणन चयेंद।  हार का बाद  सब्युंक समिण एक हैंकाक धोती नि खुलण चयेंद। पिछली हार से अपण स्वार्थ सिद्धि छोड़िक भविष्य की रणनीति पर जोर दीण चयेंद।

गुरु द्रोणाचार्य - हा हा आ !

शल्य - गुरु द्रोणाचार्य ! क्या मीन कुछ गलत बोली दे ?

गुरु द्रोणाचार्य - ना ना ! तुमर बात एकदम सही च किन्तु   

शल्य - फिर आपका यु अट्टाहास ?

गुरु द्रोणाचार्य - सब ये आदर्श से सहमत हून्दन कि हार का बाद एकजुटता ही असली जड़ी -बूटी च किन्तु भविष्य मा भी अनुभवशील विचारक ये पथ पर नि चौलल।

शल्य - मतलब ?

गुरु द्रोणाचार्य - इनि कलियुग मा असूज , संबत 2072 (AD 2015) मा बिहार विधान सभा चुनाव मा भारतीय जनता पार्टी चुनाव हारली अर भाजपा का जन्मदाता , पोषक , पित्र रूपी योद्धा खुलेआम अपण स्वार्थ, राजनैतिक महत्वाकांक्षा अर वर्चस्व का खातिर अपणी राजनीतिक दल की खुलेआम छिछलेदारी कारल। नेपथ्य से भैर आणो लालसा मा अपणी लगाईं डाळी ही तै काटणो बान भौत सा अथक प्रयत्न कारल।

शल्य - यूंक नाम ?

गुरु द्रोणाचार्य - लालकृष्ण आडवाणी , मुरली मनोहर जोशी अर यशवंत सिन्हा !

  छोट्या मा देखि छौ त्वै रामदे
अब नि छै कख छै बता हे रामदे।
धोती थेगळया चिर्रीं आंगड़ी टूटीं हंसुळी
थेंचीं बुजणी खोंसी मोसी छै रामदे।
कैरी आँखि तिरछा   घुंडा बाळ फुबत्यां
बर्ड बरड़ करो लबरा जनी छै रामदे।
छतकोट का वे पौड़ मा पड़ीं रौ
कुछ न कुछ सुणावो रामदे।
वींन गाये तीलाधारु बम सरीला
तब चिड़ावन छोरा त्वे तैं रामदे।
सिन्नगर से पौड़ी जांदू उंद औंदू
क्वी न देखु पर तु देखि रामदे।
ठुल्ला छवाळा नौना बाळा हम क्य जाणां
तब तु छै अस्सी का धोरा रामदे।
हम गयाँ संगता रिट्या कख कख घुम्यां
तू पड़ीं रै डाळा निस्सा रामदे।
क्वी बि दे द्यो नी बि द्यो क्वी बात नी
कुछ नि छै पर छै मयाळदु रामदे
बरसूँ पैथर जब गयों वख खुद्यूं मैं
तब नि पाये हाय से गए रामदे।
याद औंद थोळळी गिच्ची काठगी गौळी
ओड्यार मा बी भौण भरद्यो रामदे।
कमर झुकड़ी लाथो टेकू सुट्ट ट सुट्ट
उंद आवो उब्ब जावो रामदे।
आज सब सुख मा दुखी च नित्यानंद
तू नि पाये कुछ नि पाये रामदे

काळो रंग रै ब्वै मेरो दुश्मन
बिंवाळी नी सौकि ब्वै स्वामी को मन
मेरा बाना रै ब्वै उंकू बारमास
परदेश बास ब्वै जिकुड़ी उदास
छोड़िक अपणी कळेजी टुकड़ी
खाणु छौं फांस ब्वै गळा बाँधि ज्यूड़ि
ज्यूंदि रैक मेरि मा अब्बि बटि मिन
कैको बुरो मेरि ब्वै क्यां कु जि कन्न
मेरो रैबार तुम मेरि डाळयूं
बोलि दियां मेरी गौं कि दीदि भुल्यूं
थुपथेक मेरा तुम छोप धार्यां
कोळयूँ मा अपणी अपणौ बैठान
  पर धोरा मेरा भी बैठण द्यान

स्वामी जी मेरा जब घर आला
बोलि दीयां उमा जु याद करला
कि नी देइ सौकि तुम सणि सुख
भूली जयां स्वामी मेरी दीयुं दुःख
समझि सकिल्यात मेरा ना भुलान
कि , अब पसंदौ ब्यौ करि ल्यान
