Duryodhan Temple

PLACE : Jakholi (GARWAL)

It is believed that the local people wept so much at the defeat of the Kauravas and the death of Duryodhana at the battle of Kurukshetra that their tears became a river named Tamas (literally meaning sorrow). Tamas is also known as Tons. According to the local populace, the tear still flows and hence, the river water is never used for drinking

The Yogdhyan Badri Temple is as old as the temple of Badrinath. Pandukeshwar is 24 kms  from Joshimath , it has the Yogdhyan Badri temple one of the panch badri . The image here, in a meditative posture, is worshiped as at Badrinath.

According to the myth, the Pandavas made over Hastinapur to Raja Parikshit and retired here. Also king Pandu, the father of Pandavas had spent his last days doing penance here before his Nirvana, and hence the name. Some famous copper plate carrying old inscriptions providing valuable information on the history of the temple and early Katyuri Rajas have been found here. The surrounding region is Panchal Desh better known as UttarKhand. Suryakund , which is on the top of Milam glacier, is a hot water spring. Here Kunti is said to have given birth to Karna, fathered by Surya. Pandu married Kunti at Pandukeshwar near Sri Badrinath.

Tungnath Temple (Chamoli Garwal)

Tungnath is located in Chamoli, a district of Garhwal, in Uttranchal, India. The Tungnath Temple, situated on Tungnath at an altitude of 3,680 meters, is the highest Shiva shrine among the Panch kedars. The temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Shiva is worshipped here as one of the Panch Kedars.

It is believed that the temple was built by the Pandavas to appease Lord Shiva, who was enraged by the massacre on the battlefield of Kurukshetra during the Mahabharat war.

Kalpeshwar

Kalpeshwar is situated at Kalpeshwar in the beautiful Urgam Valley. Nestled at an altitude of 2,134 m, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is one of the Pancha or Five Kedar shrines. Kalpeshwar can be reached by a 10 km trek from Rudranath to Helong. According to a popular legend, the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone their sins after the battle of Kurukshetra. Lord Shiva eluded them repeatedly and hid himself at Guptakashi. When Pandavas spotted him at Gupatakashi, Shiva tried fleeing and took the form of a bull at Kedarnath. On being followed by the Pandava brothers, he dived into the ground and disappeared; only his hump could be seen. Bhim, the second Pandava brother, jumped on this hump and tried to catch hold of the bull by his hump. It is believed that just as bull's hump appeared in Kedarnath, his belly appeared in Madmaheshwar Temple, his limbs at Tungnath Temple, his head and hair at Kalpeshwar, and his face at Rudranath Temple. All these five temples are together known as Panchakedar and a pilgrimage of all these five shrines is considered holy by the Hindus. At Kalpeshwar, Shiva is worshipped in the form of matted hair.
