Subject: Why do we hesitate to speak in uttarakhandi language ?
Dear All,
It was interesting to read comments of our uttarakhandi brotherens on the above. We often see other people like Punjabi,Bengali,Tamils,Malyalis etc.when they meet and come to know who they are, they immediately switch over to their own language, even in the presence of others ignoring them.Where as we UK's avoid talking our own "matra bhasha",perhaps feeling low.Our brothers from Garhwal are better then us Kumaunis,I have seen them talkiing their own language.I have an incident to narrate. Few years ago I visited my native village in Naini Tal Dist.and met my two classfellows after 30 years, who were identified to me by my uncle(Chachaji). It was a nostalgic meeting.Due to my habbit I spoke in my mother tongue(Kumaoni) but they spoke in Hindi during the meeting.Later my uncle advised me to speak in Hindi during my stay there.I asked why was that? The answer was Hindiwalla is respected more.I was shockd to hear the truth !!.I think many will agree with me.
I think we should create an awarenss among our people. We should be proud to talk in our own language. Our politicians can take a lead as they talk only in Hindi, ignoring Uttarakhandi languages.During election compaigns how many of them give their speech in Uttarakhandi? I think very few or nil.Whreras in other places they speak in their native languages. For me I try to speak Kumaoni as far as possible even after 50 years of leving my village.Let us try,we can.
