            Surendra Pal- Asian Poet of Supporting Social Equality
          Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali Poetry –100

There is no shortage of Garhwali Shilpkar poets in Garhwali language but very few could express the social injustice of touch-ability and un-touchablity of our society for more than five thousand years in India. Late Ram Prakash Arya 'Bagchhat' used to sing song of Dalit's human right on the cultural programs and in the small geometers of poetry lovers. However, he could not publish his poems and even after a request to many, this author could not get the diary of Ram Praksh in which he used to write poetries of Dalit's human right, the frustrating state of Dalits for social injustice, the poor economic conditions of Dalits due to no ownership of land among Dalits of Garhwal. Surendra Pal had been initiating Dalit consciousness in the society through his poetries. Though his poetries do not attack by abusive words on upper class directly but uses indirect way and with effective mannerism, Surendra is famous in garhwali poetic field for attacking the inhuman culture of social divides among Hindus for his life through poetries.
Surendra pal was born on 23rd March, 1952 in a Himalayan village Gadhamonu , Khatsyun of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Surendra expired in his early age of 48 on 28th January , 2000 AD
After passing Intermediate, Surendra pal passed degree in Flute playing from Prayag Sangeet Samiti , Allahabad a prestigious organization in music training. Surendra Pal provided music to many concerts of Garhwali cultural programs, stage plays. Surendra was expert of playing Garhwali folk music instruments as Flute , Hudki, Mochhang. Being trained on western music, Surendra did many successful experiments in music by mixing Garhwali orthodox music with western style music.
Surendra pal published hundred of poems in local periodicals. Surendra pal received Pundit Aditya Ram Navani award for 'Chungti ' a collection of forty three Garhwali poems .
The profound Gazal maker in Garhwali language, editor and a critic Madhusudan Thapliyal writes that Surendra Pal is the sole representative of Dalit consciousness in Garhwali language poetic field. Madhusudan Thapliyal praises the poems of Surendra pal related to color discrimination among human being, inhuman treatments to deprived class in caste system, dangers of religious divides.
        Surendra criticizes the caste systems religious divide etc , However, Surendra Pal  never leaves the optimism that one day will come when equality will be there in this world.
Surendra Pal used many forms and styles in creating Garhwali language poems. However, having knowledge of music , Surendra's poems are melodious. He uses common Garhwali imagery, symbols, figure of speeches for creating easily understandable poems.

                   उत्तराखंड में तो फौग चल रआ है

मीन भुंदरा बौ कुण फोन कार।
मि -हेलो ! हैलो ! कुछ तो बोल
भुंदरा बौ -बिंडि नि हिला तै फोन तैं।  बोल क्यां     ?
मि -चलती क्या खंडाला ?
भुंदरा बौ - अपणी फूफू तै खंडाला -घंडाला लीजा ज्वा अच्काल मुंबई आईं छन।
मि -ये बौ तू कब ऐलि मुंबई ?
भुंदरा बौ -फंड फूंक तैं मुंबई तै।  हमकुण त अपणु गाँव डिजनी लैंड च।
मि - अच्छा क्या चलणु च तख ?
भुंदरा बौ -अच्काल तो सरा उत्तराखंड मा फौग चल रिया है।
मि -फौग अर बैशाख -जेठ मा ?
भुंदरा बौ -किलै ना ?
मि - फौग त सौणा मैना चलदो अर कबि कबि तो पहाड़ी फौग मा अपणी खुट नि दिखेंदन।  इथगा धूमिल दृष्टि ह्वे जांद पहाड़ी कुयड़ याने फौग से।
भुंदरा बौ - अरे वी त बुलणु छौं कि उत्तराखंड मा फौग चल रआ है।
मि -ऊँ ऊँ क्या बुल ..
भुंदरा बौ -अरे कुछ दिन पैली सरा उत्तराखंड मा अभागी बणांक नि लग छै ?
मि -मीन टीवी मा द्याख।  एक साल सिलोगी डांड पर बणांक लग छे त  इथगा  धुंआ ह्वे छौ कि दिन मा इ  मि अपण हाथ नि देखि सकणु छौ।
भुंदरा बौ - तो बीस पचीस दिन बणांकौ फौग सरा उत्तराखंड मा घुमणु राइ।  उ त मोदी जिठा जी का भाग्य अच्छु छौ जु बरखा ह्वे अर बणांकौ फौग हटि गे।     
मि -हाँ फारेस्ट फायर फौग बड़ो खतरनाक हूंद हाँ।  फिर हौर  क्या हाल छन ?
भुंदरा बौ -अरे ब्वाल नी उत्तराखंड मा फौग इ चल रआ है। 
मि -ह्यां  बणांग की आग खतम  फौग बि ख़तम। 
भुंदरा बौ -कनो उत्तराखंड मा बमतलबौ राष्ट्रपति शासन से कम फौग पैदा ह्वे क्या ?  सब्यूं की नजर कार्यपालिका  हटिक  नैनीताल हाई कोर्ट  दिल्ली सुप्रीम कोर्ट पर लगीं रैन कि असमजस का धुंवा हट जावो।
मि -हाँ ब्याळि तक असमजस का फौग उत्तराखंड मा तो छौ।  चलो अब बिचारो हरीश दा चैन से 2017 कु चुनाव चैन से मुख्यमंत्री की कुर्सी तुड़ना राला !   
भुंदरा बौ -जब कलजुगी वात्सायन तिवाड़ी जी की पुराणि चेली इंदिरा हृदयेश मुख्यमंत्री ख्वाब दिखण लग जा तो अस्थिरता को फौग उत्तराखंड मा बण्यु ही रालो कि ना ?
मि -हाँ पर यु फौग उथगा खतरनाक नि रालो।  और सुणा तख  क्या चलणु च ?
भुंदरा बौ - बस उत्तराखंड मा फौग इ चलणु च।
मि -अब क्यांको फौग ?
भुंदरा बौ -कनो पर्यटन व्यापार मा फौग नी चलणु च।  कुछ पता नी चलणु च कि उत्तराखंड पर्यटन का भविष्य क्या रालो।  भाजपा वळु रांड ह्वे अर यूंन फ़ोकट मा राजनैतिक अस्थिरता पैदा कर दे।
मि -हाँ पोलटिकल अनस्टेबिलिटी पर्यटन का वास्ता हमेशा ही घातक हूंद।  हिमाचल  पर्यटन अधिक विकसित ह्वे तो कारण या छौ बल उख  पोलिटिकल स्टेबिलिटी ही राइ।
भुंदरा बौ - वी तो बुलणु छौ मि।  इख भाजपा का कार्यकर्ताओं का मन मा फौग याने घंघतोळ च कि यदि यी बागी  कॉंग्रेसी भाजपा मा शामिल ह्वाला तो डेडिकेटेड कैडर कु क्या कुहाल होलु ? ऊना कॉंग्रेसी कार्यकर्ताओं मा त फौग ही फौग च कि जब हम अपणो घौर हि नि समाळ सकणा छंवां तो हम क्या ख़ाक प्रदेश समाळ सकला ? सब जगा फौग ही फौग च फैल्युं।  मानसिक कुयडु !
मि -छोड़ न ये बौ।  किस किस को रोये , किस किस को हंसें , आराम बड़ी चीज है मुंह ढक के सोएं।
भुंदरा बौ -स्वार्थी नागरिक कहींका ! अरे  किस किस को रोये , किस किस को हंसें , आराम बड़ी चीज है मुंह ढक के सोयें ' मानसिकता ही तो इस देश का बेड़ा गर्क कर रही है।  स्वार्थी नागरिक ! अगर कुछ गलत हूणु च त नागरिक हस्तक्षेप आवश्यक च।
अर गुस्सा मा भुंदरा बौन फोन काटी दे।

                Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas reached at Katarmal on 9th April1815, However, Nicholas was busy in collecting supply , gun collection and loaders for two weeks. The British army was camping in Katarmal, Syahidevi, and Dhamas. There were 2500 soldiers. Gurkhas were sure that British army would capture Bageshwar road. Therefore, on 22nd April morning, Nepalese Resident Bamshah sent  around 250- 300 soldiers towards Gannath with Hastidal.  Gannath hill was situated 15 miles away in north of Almora. Gannath hill was in between Kali and Koshila (Kaushiki) Rivers. When that information reached to British camp, Nicholas guessed that Hastidal party wanted for weapon supply and money from west of Kali River. However, later on the reality opened that Gurkha wanted to protect Upper Kumaon region that Gurkha would have communication with Kathmando through Bhotiya region –Johar and Daram.   
  Since, Gurkha Communication line with Tarai and Bhabhar was broken, it was essential for them that they protect upper Kumaon region. From Upper Kumaon region, Gurkha could communicate with West Kumaon, Garhwal and Himachal. It was not wise decision to keep army in Almora.
               Hastidal marched for Gannath hill through Kalamtiya Hill road. Hastidal wanted establishing camp at Gannath that left wing of Gurkha battalion would be safe from British army at Havalbaugh. The Gurkha tried for keeping Hastidal March secret. However, citizens spread news immediately to British camps.
Nicholas sent a company under  Captain Butterfield to west of Kumaon for winning citizens faith and buying food from Kumaonis.
           On 22nd April, Nicholas sent 5 companies under seventh battalion under Major Paton and 5 flank companies under Captain Laze for attacking on Hastidal Company.  There were total 900 soldiers, 6 ponds Gun and a mortar.  Gurkha army led by Hastidal reached at Gannath. Before Gurkha could  establish camps, British army attacked on Gurkha army.

  मथुरा , वाराणसी , सारनाथ में कुषाण राज्य   था और कुषाण क्षत्रपों ने पर्वतीय प्रदेश हस्तगित करने की  थी।  नेपाल में कुषाण सिक्कों की उपस्थिति साबित करती है कि पर्वतीय प्रदेश में कुषाण साम्राज्य था।
   बिजनौर  से 15 मील दूर उत्तर पूर्व की  ओर गंगाखादर बाएं तट पर मरखाम को टिप की टीले की खुदाई में कुषाण नरेश वासुदेव की  2 , वासुदेव II की 2 , भ्रि शक की 1 और कुमार गुप्त की 1 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं मिलीं थीं (पुरी , इंडिया अंडर कुशानज ,www.kushan.org/sources/coin/goldhoards.httm  ).मुद्रा सिद्ध करती हैं कि कुषाण युग में क्षत्रप भी मुद्रा चला सकते थे जैसे भ्रि शक क्षत्रप ने मुद्रा चालाई।
       
डा के पी नौटियाल के अध्ययन से पता चलता है कि काशीपुर व टिहरी गढ़वाल के नरेंद्र  नगर क्षेत्र में भी कुषाण युगीन मुद्राएं मिली हैं ( डा डबराल , उत्तराखंड का इतिहास भाग -३ पृष्ठ २२५ व kushan.org/sources/coin/goldhoards.httm )..
इन मुद्राओं से सिद्ध हो ही जाता है कि हरिद्वार  ,  बिजनौर   , सहारनपुर में कम से कम विम राजयकाल से कनिष्क III  और वासुदेव II तक कुषाण साम्राज्य  अवश्य रहा है।

      Tara Datt Gairola is great Himalayan literature Creator. Tara Datt Gairola not only created Modern Garhwali poetry at its Initial stage but Tara Datt Gairola also collected and edited Himalayan Folklore with E.S Oakley.
      Tara Datt Gairola was born in 1875 in Dal Dhung , Badiyar Garh, Tehri Garhwal. Later on migrated to Kafalsain, Idwalsyun , Garhwal.
        Rai Bahadur Tara Datt Gairola also edited Garhwali poetry collection 'Garhwali Kavitavali/ in 1932 and wrote notes on Garhwali poets
          Rai Bahadur Tara Datt Gairola published a Garhwali poetry collection 'Sadei : jagrat Swapna' in 1921.  Sadei: Jagrat Swapana is one of the best examples of Pathetic Rapture. Sadei is woman oriented sensitive long Garhwali Poetry. There is love, pain of separation, mother's love, children love for mother, love for brothers and kin; love for mother land etc. It seems that Tara datt created the ablove long poetry on the basis of old folklore available in Garhwali society.
Tara Datt Gairola is expert of personification of nature. Gairola also created assorted poetries as Fyunli Rauteli, Meri Ladli etc

         Murli Diwan illustrates the Rural Garhwal with ease and in realism style.
       Murli diwan was born in 1952 in village Devar , Nagnath , Chamoli Garhwal, Asia.
       The poet shows the real pain of discrimination for rural region against more support to city by political and administrative authorities.  Diwan pens down about environment, social aspects; social changes and their effects of society; suppression on women; social and political corruption.

मि अपण आठ सालौ नौनु गोल्डी लेकि मूळ पुजाणो मुंबई बिटेन ड्यार ग्यों।
जनि गाँव पास आई कि गांवक लोग रस्ता मा मिलदा गेन।
मि - अफार सि रतनमणि चचा जी आणा छन।  तौंक खुट मा मुंड धौरिक -दादा जी बोलिक प्रणाम करि हाँ.
गोल्डी -जी।  आइ विल फॉलो।
मि - गोल्डी ! सि डुंकर सिंग बडा आणा छन।  दादा  प्रणाम करिक प्रणाम कौरी हाँ ! खुट मा पड़णै जरूरत नी च।   
गोल्डी - जी डैडी।  पर खाली प्रणाम ? खुट मा सिवा किलै नि लगाण   ?
मि -हम बामण छंवां अर डुंकुर बडा जजमान छन।  बामण उमर मा कथगा बि छुट हो वु जजमानक खुट मा नि पड़दु। 
गोल्डी -जी डैडी  मि हाइ - हैलो स्टाइल मा प्रणाम करलु।
मि -अरे अरे ! स्यु भाना दादा आणु च , सूण तै तैं प्रणाम बि नि बुलण हाँ।  अर हाँ तै पर कतै बि नि भिड़े हाँ।  डोंट टच हिम ऐट ऑल।  बी अवे फ्रॉम हिज शैडो , वैकि छाया से दूर हि
गोल्डी -बट ह्वाइ डैड। इथगा  ओल्ड आदिम  तै  प्रणाम किलै ना ? अर शैडो से दूर किलै ?
मि - स्यु ओल्ड च पर " .." च याने शिल्पकार च , अनटचेबल च।  अर  बिठ मीन्स क्वी बि सवर्ण  कै बि  "' ..'" याने हरिजन तै प्रणाम नि करदु , ना ही वै तै स्पर्श करदो।  डोंट टच हिज बॉडी ऐट आल।
गोल्डी - ओके डैडी।  आई विल नेवर सैलूट हिम ऐंड  विल नेवर,  नेवर टच ऐनी ".. " मीन्स हरिजन।
मीन इकीसवीं सदी मा बि मुलायम जमीन मा कांड, कैकटस  का  रक्तबीज ब्वे याल छौ ।  अब तीसेक साल बाद म्यार गोल्डी अपण नौनु तै लेकि गाँव आल तो या ही घटना दुबर दुहराए जाली अवश्य।

           The steep of Gannath hill is very difficult. On the hill the place is plan. There was a Shiv Temple on the hill. Hastidal offered 3 Gold coins on Shiv Linga but Coins slipped down and Hastidal thought of inauspicious time for him. He said, Kya Jane Devta Naraj Bhayyo, Bhet Manne na"
        On 23rd Evening, tired and Hungary British army reached Gannath and the war began at Hill immediately. A gun bullet got on the temple of Hastidal. Hastidal fell down on the ground. Gurkha commander took the charge. Gurkha soldiers ran away after Hastidal falling on the ground. Gurkha could kill two British soldiers and injured 25 soldiers. According to Bamshah, Gurkha killed a captain too and only 9 Gurkha soldiers were killed by British army. According to John Premble, British soldiers killed 80 Nepalese soldiers. As per Atkinson, only 32 Gurkha soldiers were killed. The injured Gurkha soldiers were running towards Almora. Many Gurkha soldiers died on the way to Almora. Hastidal died on Gannath –Almora road. Nepalese commanders were scattered and none reached to Almora. British army captured Gannath Hill. A few soldiers remained at Gannath and balance returned to Almora.
   Hastidal was reputable army man . Frazer praised bravery of Hastidal.   Nicholas also praised the bravery of Hastidal and paid tribute in a letter. Maularam described with high praise that the dead body was taken on Horse cart to Ganga bank and was cremated there. The British soldiers were watching cremation of Hastidal. Mostly, the body of Hastidal was cremated at Kaushikganga River bank.
    There was hopelessness in Gurkha camp after defeat and death of Hastidal, Jairakha and soldiers. Nepalese lost Lobhagarhi too. Now, Nicholas decided for attacking on Almora.

  बलख -खोतान से बिहार तक , कश्मीर से लेकर सिंधु घाटी तक कुषाण साम्राज्य फैला था।  अतः कुषाण राजाओं ने शासन हेतु विकेन्द्रीकृत शासन प्रणाली अपनाई जिसमे क्षत्रपों को क्षेत्रीय शासन सौंपा  गया था।  म्हाक्षत्रपों को महत्वपूर्ण अधिकार सौंपे गए थे।   क्षत्रप 'महाराजा राजातिराज ' की उपाधि धारण नहीं कर सकते थे।  म्हाक्षत्रपों के अधीन क्षत्रप शासन चलाते थे।
            अभिलेखों से ज्ञात होता है कि प्रजा को महाक्षत्रप व क्षत्रप के नाम ज्ञात होता था और प्रजा उन्हें  राजा जैसे ही सम्मान देती थी।
   अभिलेखों में अंकित नामों से पता चलता है कि क्षत्रप /महाक्षत्रप का पद कुषाणों व शकादि के लिए सुरक्षित था व पद पारम्परिक थे।

दंडनायक , महादंडनायक , प्रचण्डदण्डनायक के पद संभवतया सेना , पुलिस  जैसे पद थे, सुव्यवस्था के उत्तरदायी होने  अतिरिक्त वे सम्राट से भी  सीधे संपर्क कर सकते थे  और ये पद भी कुषाणों , शकों, विदेशियों  के लिए आरक्षित थे। गांवों में अधिकारी स्थानीय होते थे।  क्षत्रप , दंडनायक आदि  विदेशी होने से प्रजा  को कस्ट व परेशानी होती थी।
