Sanatananand Saklani: One of Initiators of Modern Garhwali Asian Poetry
Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry –11 F

                    Literature Historian:  Bhishma Kukreti
Sanatananand Saklani was one of the initiators of Modern Garhwali, Asian Poetries. Less is known about life of Sanatananand Saklani. Even there is no mention of works of Saklani in Garhwal Chitra – Barrister Mukandi Lal memorial book.
Garhwali Literature historian Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna offered life cycle of         Sanatananand Saklani 'Satkvidas' as 1878-1920. The great Garhwali poetry critic and historian Dr Jagdamba Kotnala mentioned the publication years of two poems by Sanatananand Saklani 'Satkvidas'
Swarth Saptak – Garhwali, August 1906
Sacchi Sakha Saput ku – Garhwali June 1907
Both the above poems were published in Garhwali Kavitavali (edited by Tara Datt Gairola1932)
Both the poems are purely inspirational. 'Swarth Saptak' criticizes the selfish nature sharply with satire and 'Sacchi Sakha Saput ku' is a patriotic poem.
It happened in first part of twenty first century that Garhwali poets use Sanskrit oriented Garhwali. Here too, Sanatananand Saklani uses Sanskrit oriented Garhwali.
Publisher of Garhwali poetry collection 'Garhwali Kavitavali' (1932) mentined in his forwarding notes that ' Ye sangrah ka Arambhik Bhag ku Thik Thak rakhan ma Pt. Swargiy Sanatanannnd Saklani n badi sahayata dini chhai . Dukh ch ki unka jivit kal ma yo sangrah ni chhapo sakyo. Ab unki atma yan ka prakashit hon se such manli" (Late pundit Sanatananand Saklani helped in keeping initial part of this collection.) It is sad that this collection did not come out in his life. However, his soul would be happy after the publication."
Those lines are proof that Sanatananand Saklani was taking part actively in inspiring and helping poets for publishing their work in Garhwali magazine.

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

In morning around 8.30Am, when the guns, gun powder, and weapons for British army reached to Almora from Katarmal, war again started. Lieutenant Winfield was instructed for capturing King Palace, Almora by taking his army from Deepchand temple towards Almora Fort. The King Palace was in between Deepchand Temple and Almora Fort. The King Palace was big building squared and two story building. There was eight feet high stonewall. The Gurkha soldiers fired on British soldiers from the palace. However, British soldiers jumped the wall and reached inside Palace.   British soldiers reached upper story though steps. Eight or ten Gurkha soldiers ran away from other side. Till that time, 6 ponds canon was brought there. British army fired on a King Palace wall. The wall broke down and more British soldiers entered into Palace. A Canon was kept there.
Almora Fort was 70 yards away from King Palace.
British army was firing Guns from Deepchand Temple. Bullets were fired to Almora fort.  Gurkha soldiers ran away towards Lalmandi Fort. Nicholas ordered soldiers for entering into Almora Fort from those windows through which Gurkha soldiers were coming out. However, windows were tightly closed by Gurkha soldiers. Gurkha soldiers fired and threw stones on British soldiers.
                                                   End of the War

Bamshah could not continue war. His soldiers were dissatisfied due to hunger and they did not get salary for months. Gurkha soldiers were faithful but outsiders deceived Gurkha Kingdome and at the crucial time, outsiders left Gurkha army.  Gurkha army was not having sufficient resources for heading on with resourceful British army. Bamshah consulted his deputies as Angad, Chamu Bhandari, Jasmadan Thapa and even Hearsay. After consultation , Bamshah decided to end war. At nine in morning, Bamshah showed white flags a symbol of ending war. Bamshah sent his faithful subordinate for requesting british commander for stopping firing and attack. That subordinate was having a letter from Bamshah and other letter from Hearsay for Nicholas.

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

At the end of March 1815, when British army led by Lieutenant Colonel Gardner was waiting for Regular Army arrival at Katarmal Camp, Edward Gardner requested Bamshah that if Nepalese army was ready to end war without fight and was ready for handing over Almora to British, British army would permit Nepalese army for crossing Kali River for heading to Nepal. However, Bamshah was not ready for the treaty at that moment. Then, on 26th April 1815, Bamshah was ready for the treaty on the same conditions. Edward Gardner was not interested for posing hard conditions. Therefore Edward Gardner sent Lieutenant Colonel Gardner for discussing Treaty Conditions with Bamshah.
Bamshah put condition that let that Nepalese army be permitted to march to Himachal that was sent from Kathmandu for helping Amar Singh Thapa. Nicholas refused for agreeing the condition. On 27th April 1815, Bamshah agreed for releasing Hearsay. On that same day, Bamshah signed on the Kumaon Treaty with his three army deputies. The treaty was as –
On Thursay, 4 Baishakh, Sanvat 1872, the Treaty letter was signed between Chautra Bamshah, Kaji Chamu Shah , Caiptain ANgad Sardar and Jasmadan Thapa with lieutenant Colonel Gardner who was representing Nicholas and Sir Edward Gardner the representative of Governor General, The agreement is as-
1-The Gurkha soldiers and commanders would vacate Almora Forts and all Garhis (Fort) of Kumaon region.

2- The soldiers of this fort and other forts would be allowed for taking their properties as- weapons, guns, gun powders etc and personal properties for crossing Kali River.
3- Gurkha Soldiers could cross any suitable and convenient ways for crossing Kali River. British Army would arrange for food for Gurkha soldiers and loading the goods of Gurkha soldiers for reaching the decided destinations.
4- Today, Gurkha army would hand over Lalmandi Fort to British Army.
On that day, British army entered into Lalmandi Fort with loud Gun Firings. Bamshah released Hearsay.  Bmashah ordered Gurkha army men for vacating all Garhis (Forts or fortes) of Kumaon. On 25th April 1815,

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Jasmadan Thapa reached to British camp with letter of Bamshah on the evening of same day. That letter was for Amar Singh Thapa, Ranjor Singh Thapa and other commanders in western region. Bamshah requested that let that letter reached to Ranjor Singh at Jaithok.
Bamshah described the wars at Gannath, Sitoli and Lalmandi. At the end he illustrated Kumaon treaty as follows-
We all four  ( Bamshah, Chamu Bhandari, Angad Sardar and Jasmadan Thapa) discussed and thought about the situation. We have weapons in ample quantity. However, the irregular (outsiders) deceived us. When anybody showed trust on somebody and that person deceived nobody can do anything. The real Gurkha soldiers were patriotic and outsiders became trustless. That was why , we thought not to spend the resources and power of the King. Gardner told that after ending war we (Gurkha ) should cross Kali River and we should write letter to King that he should appoint an advocate who would visit Governor General for deciding treaty conditions. In Kumaon, British are preparing conditions. There was cordial relationship between British and Gurkha commanders. You also return from West.  We are going to east by crossing Kali River. Have treaty with David Ochterloni and come back with your weapons and materials. We shall advice to King for appointing advocate for discussing with Governor General for treaty, Gardner sent that letter to David Ochterloni.
Gurkha Commanders of Shrinagar Garhwal refusing Surrender

Gurkha soldiers of various Garhis of Kumaon obeyed the advice of Bamshah and surrendered before British army. The Nepalese soldiers at Naithana Garhi, Kumaon also surrendered.  The Gurkha soldiers of Lobhagarhi already vacated long back. There were Nepalese soldiers in Langur Garhi, Nagpur, Painkhanda and Shrinagar of Garhwal. Maximum Nepalese soldiers were in Shrinagar Garhwal. Bamshah wished that the Nepalese soldiers of Garhwal would also be given same facilities for going to Nepal region as given to Gurkha soldiers of Kumaon.
Nicholas instructed his army for capturing Alaknanda and Pindar River valleys. Nicholas ordered his army to treat Gurkha well when they surrender. However, Nepalese commander Kaji Bakhtwar Singh Basnet s and soldiers were not ready for surrendering before British army till they get instruction from Amar Singh Thapa.
