         प्राचीन काल से ही भारत का उत्तराखंड के पहाड़ों  व तिब्ब्त के साथ व्यापार हेतु हरिद्वार, बिजनौर व सहारनपुर  का महत्व था और आज भी है।
कुषाण काल में भी हरिद्वार, बिजनौर व सहारनपुर हिमालय व तिब्ब्त के साथ व्यापार हेतु मध्य स्थान का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान था।
  कुषाण काल में तिब्बत से व उत्तराखंड ले पहाड़ों से  हरिद्वार, बिजनौर व सहारनपुर की मंडियों में निम्न माल लाते थे -
सुहाग
शिलाजीत
स्वर्ण
बिभिन्न जंतु -जानवर
बन औषधि
मसाले
अनाज
फल 
सुक्सा (डिहाइड्रेटेड फल व सब्जी )
वनों से बने कई वस्तुएं
ऊनी  वस्त्र
धातु
खनिज
इसी प्रकार तिब्ब्ती , तंगण , उत्तराखण्डी व्यापारी   हरिद्वार, बिजनौर व सहारनपुर की मंडियों से गुड , सूत , रोम आदि से आयातित वस्तुएं , मसाले , अनाज आदि खरीदकर उत्तराखंड के पहाड़ों व तिब्बत ले जाते थे।

                Spring is an astounding natural phenomenon, spring brings many metabolic changes the earth,  plants and animals or in all living organisms . That is the reason that in every language, poets created poems related to spring (Basant) . Internationally famous poets of various languages as Tu Fu,  Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Tusser, Amy Lowell, Henry van Dyke,  Walt Whiteman, Thomas Nashe, T S Elliot, William Shakespeare, Robert Frost, E.E Cummings, Robert Herrick, Emily Dickenson, Sir Thomas Malory,  E A Housman,   Algernon Charles Swinburne, M. Travis Lane, Linda Pastan, P. K. Page, William Matthews, Norwegian poet Olav H. Hauge, Michael Longley, Viennese  (German)poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal ,  Théophile Gautier , John Webster, William Blake, William Wordsworth, Christina Rosette, D H Lawrence,  Robert Louis Stevenson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, John Clare, Carl Sandburg,Denis Dunn, Dorothea Grossman, Doug Holder, Margaret James, Wayne Jarus,Guy Kettelhack, Christine Klocek-Lim, Steve Meador, Justine Nicholas, Jack Peachum, Don Rehling, Lisa Shields, Larissa Shmailo, Ingrid Toth, Melissa Varnavas, Bill Vartnaw created poetries on spring (Basant ) .
   In Garhwali language, there are many folk songs and sayings about spring. Many or most of the modern Garhwali poets created one or a couple of verses in Garhwali language.
  Mahesh Dhashmana Shastri is the only Garhwali  poet who is fully dedicated to Basant or Spring and he has been  singing  his spring related poems in various cultural conferences , Akashvani, in private or at any suitable place wherever audience is there from 1979. Akashvani has been relaying his spring poems for many years.
   In this volume Basant-Geet ( Rhymes of Spring) , there are twenty poems of Mahesh  Dhashmana  related to spring. Only.
  The subject varies from the beginning of spring, changes in the season, blooming of various types of flowers in Garhwal, springing up many herbs from the earth, etc. Manypoems are related to love songs ( happiness because of meeting of lovers and sadness by separation of lovers) are marvelous piece of poems. The poet also shows effect of migration from Garhwal in his spring poems and the readers will enjoy the symbols in such poems . A  spring poems is  for worshipping the Goddess Durga. The poet Mahesh Dhashmana also related the philosophy of Geeta to the emerging of spring and passing of spring that is  coming of summer season after spring is over. Mahesh has been successful in  narrating  the cultural activities of Garhwali folks  in the spring months (the months of song and dance)  . There is prayer of spring in this volume besides the poetdescribing many philosophies and human /animal activities of spring thorough his poetries.
             The language of poems is very simple and easily understandable. The songs created are in conventional methodology. Mahesh Dhashmana used various types of figures of speech in describing or praising spring effectively.
           The history of Garhwali literature will remember Mahesh Dhashmana for his dedication to spring in Garhwal and popularizing Basant Geet among common men through various medium.

अब ये गाँ तो दूर मि यीं अडगैं (क्षेत्र ) मा एक दिन बि नि रै सकदु। 
पैल हम  मरद राजनैतिक पार्ट्यूं द्वारा बेवकूफ बणदा छया तो अधिक फरक नि पड़दो छौ पर अब त  जनानी बि यूँ बदखोर राजनीतिज्ञों की भकलौण मा आण मिसे गेन भै !
सि जब  बंगाल का कॉंग्रेसी विधायकुंन  सोनिया गांधी  -राहुल  गांधी की बफादारी की कसम  100 रूप्यका स्टाम्प पेपर मा बॉन्ड क्या भौर कि दुन्या की सभी भाभी  सब द्यूरों से इख तलक कि कुंडम जाणो तयार बैठ्युं 99 सालौ द्यूर से बि बफादारी बॉन्ड भराणा छन।
बंगाल की राजनैतिक घटना से प्रेरित ह्वेकि ब्याळि सुबेर सुबेर घाटम जाणो तयार बैठीं 97  सालैकि, बेदंत , झुर्रियों की खान  गुंदरा बौ अपण झड़नातिक  दगड़ लाठ टेकिक म्यार चौकम आई अर बुलण लग गे , "ये भीषम ! मि तैं ते पर भरोसा नी च। "
मीन  मजाक मसखरी मा जबाब दे , " ये बौ तीन भरवस गज्जू भैजी पर नि कार तो मैं फर किलै भरवस करली ?"
97 बेदंत , झुर्रियों की खान सालैकि गुंदरा बौन आग बिताळ ह्वेक ब्वाल।," मि मजाक नि करणु छौं। मी गम्भीर ह्वेका बुलणु छौं कि मी तैं तेफर कत्तै भरोषा नी च। "
मीन ब्वाल - ये बौ क्या यीं भगवान का पास  जाणै उमर मा तू चुनाव लड़न चाणि छे ?
गुंदरा बौ - मि नि जाणदू।  बस तू एक बफादारी बॉन्ड भर दे तबि मि त्यार दगड़ वेजिटेरियन मजाक मसखरी  करुल।
इन बोलिक गुंदरा बौ लाठ टिकद टिकद चली गे।  मीन समझ बल यीं उमर मा दिमाग जगा मा नि ह्वाल तो स्या बौ बकबक करणी ह्वेलि।
कुछ देर बाद काणि बौ याने 77 बरस की सुंदरा बौ ऐ।  जवानी का दिनों मा सुंदरा बौ तै स्याड़ी बौ बुल्दा छया अब तैंको नाम काणी बौ पड़ गे।  कुज्याण किलै धौं। द्यूर लोगुंन फोकट मा  नाम दे दे। आजकल सब संभव च।  जब दिल्ली का मशालची राहुल गांधी का नाम फोकट मा
निकज्जु , निखत्तु  अर पप्पू पोड़ सकद तो स्याड़ी बौक नाम काणी बौ बि पौड़ सकद। 
वा बौ जोर से बोलिक सरासर चल गे कि -मेकुण बौ बुलण त बफादारिक बॉन्ड  भरण पोड़ल।
इनि चार पांच बुडड़ि ऐन अर बफादारी बौंड भरणो आदेश देकि चल गेन।  ना क्वी रामा रूमी ना क्वी मजाक मसखरी। 
अंत मा चिरसुन्दरी भुंदरा बौ ऐ।
मीन फटाक से ब्वाल - चलती क्या खंडाला ?
चिरसुन्दरी भुंदरा - डोंट बी सिल्ली पिग ! आई डोंट लाइक सिल्ली - ओल्ड जोक्स।
मी गंगड़ै ग्यों कि यी क्या मक्खन आज पत्थर कनै बौण ?
चिरसुन्दरी भुंदरा बौन एक इंडिमिनिटी बॉन्ड दे अर ब्वाल - जब तक तू ये बफादारी बॉन्ड भौरिक नि देली हम बौ क्वी बि त्यार दगड़ बात नि कौर सकदा।
अर चिरसुन्दरी भुंदरा बौ तड़ तड़ाक सटक गे।
मीन बॉन्ड की इबारत पौढ़ -
मैं . ------ पुत्र ----- कसम खाता हूँ कि
१- किसी भी गरीब की जनानी को भाभी नहीं कहूंगा।
२- भाभी को माँ -बहिन का दर्जा दूंगा।
३- भाभी के साथ केवल वेजिटेरियन मजाक ही करूंगा।
४- भाभियों के साथ मृत्यु परन्त बफादारी निभाऊंगा।

१०  - किसी भी भाभी की शिकायत नहीं करूंगा
११- किसी भी भाभी को अपने साहित्य में हास्य व्यंग्य रचने हेतु चरित्र  नहीं बनाऊंगा।
अब तुमि बथावदि कि मि त ह्वे मरद जातिक।  अब मरद जातिक इ जि बफादारी निभाण लग जावन तो फिर सतयुग नि ऐ जालु ? अर फिर मरद जाती से बफादारी की उम्मीद ?
मि इख बिटेन लुकिक सटकणो तयारी मा छौं।

             Immediately after surrender of Bamshah, Edward Gardner arranged defense mechanism for Kumaon.
   After Bamshah crossing Jhulaghat, Nicholas and lieutenant colonel Gardner reached to Champawat.  Nicholas took charge of defending East region and Lieutenant Colonel Gardner took charge of country side. It was not possible to attck on Doti from Jhulaghat. After crossing Jhulaghat, there was two miles steep terrain for reaching towards Doti. The soldiers could attack by stones from hill. British kept 6 soldiers, 7 messengers and one clerk at Jhulaghat. On the road for Jhulaghat, British established camps in Munjil Kanda and Miyalakh. In each camp, there were 15 soldiers. At Jamalipani Ghat ( north of Jhulaghat) , British commanders kept 4 messengers. British soldiers cut rope way bridges at 16 Kali River Ports and necessary arrangement was done for defending ports. At Muldab Port , boats were burnt. 
Bamshah and Rudravir Shah arranged defense tactics in Doti.
In Jhulaghat the person was checked thoroughly and then only was allowed to cross or walk . The soldiers used to  shout- Khabardar.

        कुषाण युग से  पहले ही  भाभर में अनेक छोटे बड़े व्यापारिक मंडियां स्थापित हो चुकीं  थीं। ये मंडियां मैदानी व पहाड़ों के मध्य व्यापारिक सेतु का  करतीं थीं।
भाभर में स्रुघ्न , कालकूट , बेहट , वीरभद्र , कनखल , मोरगिरी , गोविषाण , मयूरध्वज आदि व्यापारिक केंद्र रहे होंगे जो बाद में नष्ट हो गई होंगी।
  शिव प्रसाद डबराल (उत्तराखंड का इतिहास -भाग ३ , पृष्ठ २३३ ) में लिखते हैं -
इसका पता अब केवल उनके प्राचीन खंडहरों या उनकी अवशिष्ठ पक्की ईंटों से लगता है की उस समय की ईंटें बड़ी होती थीं।
वीरभद्र , मयूरध्वज में ईंटों की दीवारें मिली थीं जो सुरक्षित न करने से इधर उधर हो गईं हैं।  लालढांग -पण्डुवाला में भी इसी तरह की ईंटें मिलीं थीं।

  Sadanand Kukreti: Garhwali, Asian Poet of Community Awakening

Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry – 13

                    Literature Historian:  Bhishma Kukreti
           Sada Nand Kukreti was a true Gandhian and social worker. Sada Nand Kukreti dedicated his life for lifting the community.  His social worker instinct is always seen in his poems and story too.
Sada Nand Kukreti was born in a village Gweel, Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand in 1886. There was a primary school in Tankan near Gweel where he obtained early education.
  He worked with Tehri Riyasat in revenue department for a couple of years. However, Sada Nand Kukreti could not adjust with corrupt atmosphere and he left the job. He shifted Pauri and joined Vishal Kirti and started editing the news paper. His editorial and poems were anti British colonial subjects. British authority did not like his editorials and he had to leave the job.
   Sada Nand Kukreti came to Chailusain (Dabralsyun) and joined a Christian missionary school as a teacher. Peter was Father of the convent. Sada Nand Kukreti found that under the shadow of educating local people, Peter was busy in converting Hindus especially scheduled caste community into Christian religion. 
          Sada Nand left the teaching in Chailusain and took a vow to establish a Hindu school nearby.  He along with Pasbola ji of Langur Patti , Dabral ji of Jalth (Dabralsyun) , Bisht ji of Judd  (Dabralsyun) and local villagers of Kande, Kadti founded  a primary  school at Silogi hill, Malla Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal (height around 5000 Feet) on 2nd April  1923.  Villagers of Kande and Kadti donated land to the school.  Sada Nand Kukreti took the jb on his shoulders and started taking small –small donation from nearby villagers. He turned primary school into middle school (up to 7th Standard) by 1928. People used to call him Sant sada nand or Sapadak ji (Editor). Today, Dhangu, Dabralsyun, Udaypur, Langur people call him as Madan Mohan Malviya of Ganga Salan.
      His social reform interests are clearly visible in his Garhwali poetries. Sada nand Kukreti published a poem in Garhwali magazine and a few in Vishal Kirti .
Following Garhwali poem is about nation love and the language is very simple.

प्राणीक प्राणू कि लगै जु बाजी , जै जो विदेशों कर साज साजी
गावो जु ध्यानो नित जै स्वदेशी , जै जै स्वदेशी ! जै जै स्वदेशी।
               या देह निश्चै  छुटली ही भाई , ह्वै जीर्ण कुत्तादिक की सि भाई
              पूजी सदा पूज्य कि माँ स्वदेशी गाई बजाई जै जै स्वदेशी।
सो यज्ञ मा आत्म बलि को देइ , द्यो त्यागी दासत्व प्रभुत्व लेई
गावो सपूतो तुम जै स्वदेशी , जै जै स्वदेशी, जै जै स्वदेशी।
            सेवा स्वदेशी कि छ धर्म्म भाई , यो ही सपूत जु गाई बताई
             देई इनो ही तु सपूत माई , जै जै स्वदेशी ! जै जै स्वदेशी।
छै आदि शक्ति कि इबारे माई , जो भाव मैतूं अवतार माई
जै दैणा  ह्वीं श्री स्वसुराज दाई , हे माई !गौं  तेरि मि  जै सदाई।

          Hindered of soldiers left Gurkha army and joined irregular British army at the time of Kumaon Campaign.  After capturing Kumaon, British commanders appointed those soldiers as regular British army soldier and established Kumaon Battalion. The adjutants and commandants were European for Kumaon Battalion.
    The Rohila irregular soldiers proved to be problematic for British. When Rohilla soldiers returned back to plains (south of Kumaon), those soldiers started looting nearby villages and looting articles from their own Army stores. (John Premable).
                        Attraction for Hill Roads
   Edward Gardner tried pleasing Bhotias of Bhotantik region (north of Uttarakhand). The maps available with East India Company officials were with lot of mistakes. British officials were ready for Kali River as border demarcation between Nepal and Kumaon. However, British high command was anxious to have roads to Tibet under British. Therefore, British High Command instructed Edward Gardner for sending his suggestions for border line. Gardner sent  a map made with the help of Hearsay showing roads towards Tibet. The map was showing Neeti valley road to Tibet so simple that a person could reach easily to Daba valley of Tibet. Governor General decided to bring whole East of Alaknanda region under British rule.

                     Death of Harsh Dev Joshi

  Till first week of January 1815, Harsh Dev Joshi was in Kashipur in British camp. It is said that Harsh Dev Joshi was with the army that camped in Almora led by Lieutenant Colonel Gardner.
         Harsh Dev Joshi expired on 26th July 1815. Before the death, harsh Dev Joshi wnet to Gannath and wrote his will on Ashadh sudi Ashtami sambat 1872( July 1815) (Pade, Kumaon ka Itihas) .
               Harsh Dev Joshi was sucssful in getting his Jagir from British that he was offered by Chand King and Pradyuman Shah. British also accepted Rs 1000 monthly pension for Harsh Dev Joshi.
