British Campaign for Capturing Himachal -7
Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -290
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -820

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Gurkha not only lost the huge army in Diuthal battle but Amarsingh Thapa lost respect from his armed forces and also lost the hope of defending the territory from British. Most of soldiers did not respect Amar Singh Thapa. Now, soldiers also lost faith in Kingdom (Premble).
Nepal King already suggested Ranjor to have treaty with British by offering them Bhabhar, Tarai, Doon territories. However, Amar Singh Thapa did not abide the order of the King and continued enmity with the British.
Amar Singh Thapa sent a letter to the Nepal King and British spies got that letter. British started spreading rumors due to that letter. The information was spread among Gurkha soldiers that Nepal King was ready for treaty with British but Amar Singh Thapa was in denial. Gurkha soldiers from Malaun started leaving Gurkha Army and started joining British army. Amar Singh tried to stop them by cruel methods but could not be successful in doing so.
Amar Singh Thapa had two major non Gurkha friends- King of Bilaspur Mahachand and Prime Minister of Bushehr Dangi. Mahachand joined hand with British after British capturing Bilaspur.  Bazir Dangi was with Amar Singh from 1811. Dangi Bazir left Amar Singh Thapa and joined British camp just before the Diuthal battle. In bushehr, Bazir Tikkandas and Bazir Badaridas were organizing revolt against Gurkha. On 15th April Bazir dangi reached to Bushehr for participating in revolution.
Ochterlony captured all Garhis of Malaun. On 7th May, British army could reach with two 12 pond bronze Guns (loaded on elephants) Ochterlony was successful in sending at Malaun Hill. Amar Singh Thapa was suffering from food supply for his family and troop. He was of opinion that he should wait till rainy season start as British army would go to plains in rainy season. Amar Singh Thapa reduced food supply for his soldiers. Gurkha soldiers were hungry and started taking jungle leaves and roots. Gurkha soldiers started shouting- "Sardar! Either offer us food or let us go out to fight with British" . There was unrest allover Malaun Garhi. Amar Singh Thapa did not have alternatives.
British army surrounded every corner of Malaun Garhi. It was just impossible for reaching food supply to Malaungarh. The higher Army commanders of Amar Singh Thapa requested Amar Singh Thapa either surrender or fight till death. Amar Singh Thapa asked them for waiting. Now, Gurkha Army commanders did not abide their superior's order and went to British camp with around 1600 soldiers.
Ranjor Singh at Jaithok was also trapped there.
The higher commanders would be Gurkha but soldiers were mostly non Gurkha but either Himachali or Garhwali. British officers offered lot of tasty feast like food to Gurkha army soldiers and sweets too. Now, it was probably that Amar Singh Thapa would have had only 200-250 soldiers with him. On 8th May, 1815, Amar Singh Thapa sent a letter to Ochterlony about Ochterlony's his desire. Ochterlony answered that Thapa should behave as defeated commander behaves. Till 10th May, Amar Singh Thapa did not reply. On morning of 10th May, British army started firing heavy guns on Malaungarhi. Next day, British soldiers took 18 Podn gun near Garhi. Now, Amar Singh Thapa was ready for surrender.
On 11th May, Ramdas (the son of Amar Singh) met Ochterlony. Ramdas informed Ochterlony that his father was ready for surrendering.
By 15th May 1815, there were many rounds of discussion between Amar Singh Thapa and Ochterlony for the conditions of surrendering.
Now, British had rule over Kumaon, Garhwal and Governor General was not ready for soft conditions for Amar Singh Thapa. Governor General was not ready for offering same conditions to Amar Singh Thapa as offered to Bamshah in Kumaon. Governor General clearly instructed that not to let Gurkha take heavy weapons from forts captured by British from Gurkha army. Governor General instructed that let defeated Gurkha take small weaponries. Governor General accepted that British would offer loaders to Gurkha for taking necessary articles to Nepal. Governor General offered full authorities to Ochterlony for taking decision of surrender by Amar Singh Thapa.
However, Ochterlony offered more liberal and respectful conditions for Amar Singh Thapa. He was of opinion that liberal conditions would be helpful in having treaty with Nepal Kingdom.

                        Conditions for Malaun Treaty

British Campaign for Capturing Himachal -8
Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -291
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -821

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

On 15th May, a Treaty at Malaun was signed by Amar Singh Thapa and Colonel Ochterlony.  There were following conditions for Malaun Treaty-
"Keeping in mind the high authority, character and ability for ruling the given territory by Amar Singh Thapa, the following conditions are accepted-
1-Kaji Amar Singh Thapa would vacate Rajgarh (Malaun) and would proceed for his Rajgarh (Nepal) with his army. His soldiers would take weapons, two guns, personal properties, flags with them. British will facilitate for every subordinate of Amar Singh Thapa going to Nepal with respect and safety.
2-Keeping in mind the brave character of Ranjor/Ranjur Singh Thapa, he is also allowed with same facility. Ranjor Singh will march with his 200 soldiers from Jaithok/Jaithak. These soldiers would take weapons, flags, one gun and personal property with them. Other 300 non army personnel (Bhardar) would be without weapons and can take personal property with them. There will be respectful facilities for them and every care will be taken for respect of women.
3- Kaji Amar Singh Thapa and Ranjor/Ranjur Thapa will have freedom to march to Nepal border at Saryu Rive through Thaneshwar, Haridwar, Nazibabad. They are free for going through other roads. Necessary arrangement will be done for loading and carrying their properties.
4- Kaji Amar Singh Thapa and Ranjor /Ranjur Singh Thapa are free for meeting anywhere.
5- Those soldiers of Nepal do not want to go back Nepal are free for joining the British army. Other soldiers who do not want to go back to Nepal and British government do not wish them to appoint in its Army would be there as war prisoners till there is treaty between Nepal Kingdom and British.
6- Amar Singh Thapa could stay at Malaun Fort till loaders reach there and after then he has to leave immediately.
7- Amar Singh Thapa will instruct soldiers at staying at Gurkha occupied Forts (Garhi) as Bheli (Arki), Sabathu, Morani, Jaithok/Jaithak, Jagatgarh, Ravain etc for vacating the Forts (Garhi) and they should hand over the Garhi to authorized British officials.  The soldiers of those Garhi could take personal properties safely but cannot take weapons till Governor General takes decision.
8- Amar Singh Thapa is ready for instructing Kaji Bakhtwar Singh that he immediately vacates Garhwal state and he should hand over all forts (Garhi) to authorized British officials. Soldiers of Garhwal can take personal properties and weapons with them for going to Nepal through Kumaon (Kali River). British Government would offer a 'Pass' and one peon for one month for travelling through Kumaon. "
Separate Condition by Amar Singh Thapa
Both the officials were  just to sign that the letter of Bamshah for Nepalese Residents of west region reached there through official. Amar Singh Thaap added following conditions after reading the letter as-
"Amar Singh Thapa would like to declare that he is signing treaty just for the better realtion with British. He accepted agreement because of suggestions from Bamshah and other Bhardar (Officials) of Kumaon. "
The apprehension of Bamshah about Amar Singh Thapa came true. Amar Singh Thapa not only added the suggestion by Bamshah on treaty paper but also wrote a letter to the Nepal King. Amar Singh Thapa wrote to the King that he surrendered before British army as per the suggestions from Bamshah.

He could illustrate successfully the images of geographical nature and human activities in the long poem.
Totakrishna Gairola used old Sanskrit Chhand in his long poetry.

                         Gurkha Leaving Himachal

British Campaign for Capturing Himachal -9
Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -292
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -822

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)
After having arrangement for loaders and carriers, in May 1815, Amar Singh Thapa started his journey for Nepal with his soldiers. His way was from Malaun to Kurukshetra, Haridwar and Pailibhit to Nepal. Lieutenant Murray was with a few soldiers was with Amar Singh Thapa for his safety.  Old , defeated, sad Amar Singh Thapa was in embarrassing situation as he was leaving the land which he won with strength and hard work. There is no information about the numbers of soldiers with him and with Ranjor Singh and Balbhadra those returned to Nepal.
                      Nasiri Battalion
Till the war ended in Himachal and Ravain, around 4650 soldiers from Gurkha side joined British Army. Those ex Gurkha army soldiers were deputed for protection of various Garhis (Forts and Fortress) .The ex Gurkha army soldiers in Hindur and Nahan were also eager for joining British army. British did not need those much soldiers now. However, Hastings already promised the deserting soldiers of Gurkha army that British would appoint them.  British commanders created three Nasari battalions for those ex Gorkha army soldiers. Every battalion had six companies and every company had 120 irregular soldiers. The first and second battalions were named as Nasiri Battalion and third were named as Sirmaur Battalion.
Same way, a new Battalion Kumaon Battalion was established for irregular such soldiers. Those ex Gurkha soldiers were habitual of cruel behaviours with common people and were habitual of looting people. Those soldiers started same behavior with people as they used to give pain to common people.

Baldev Prasad Nautiyal: Philologist, Garhwali Poet and Prose Maker
Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry – 17

                    Literature Historian:  Bhishma Kukreti
Professor  Baldev Prasad Nautiyal is famous for his article writing, writing about aspects of philology of Garhwali , and creating poetry in Garhwali . He got fame in Sanskrit literature creation and was  a  Hindi writer too.
Baldev Prasad Nautiyal was born in 1895, in Kadakot, Gagwadsyun of Pauri Garhwal. He passed M .A in Sanskrit from Lahor University , Lahor and started his career as Sanskrit lecturer in Lahor College.
Very soon, Baldev Prasad Nautiyal  became expert of training to teachers, creating new style of Sanskrit study in schools and colleges,  and syllabus making for Sanskrit language in Lahor. He published many books for college studies in Sanskrit language and  his book "Dwitiya Pathy Pustakam' in Sanskrit became the most famous syllabus book for colleges.
After partition, he spent some times in Chamoli as Principal in Eastmain . Later on he shifted to Delhi.
He created a Garhwali dictionary in Lahor but was lost while escaping from Lahor to Delhi. He rewrote this dictionary in Delhi . This dictionary is more about finding the origin of Garhwali words than the meaning. However, as Kanhayalal Dandriyal could not publish his 45,000 words dictionary, Nautiyal could not publish his works of eminent. There is a sample of his work for Garhwali dictionary published by Garhwali Sahitya Parishad Lahor in 1942, titled as 'Garhwali Shabd Bhandar'. By studying the sample, any body can guess that the work of Nautiyal is of high research and Nautiyal had deep knowledge of Sanskrit, Pali, Maghadi, Khadi Boli and Garhwali as well.
We have only left a published work in Garhwali language ' Chhaya Ramayan' a poetry collection and a novel in Garhwali- Byalmun-Byunral. Respectful researcher late Pitamber Dutt Devrani states that he published his memoir in Hindi and published many essays of philological subject of Garhwal language in Garhwali and Hindi as well.
Professor Nautiyal expired in Delhi at the age of eighty six  on 30 June, 1981.
