Draupadi baja Nrity-Geet:  A  very Interesting Folk Song for Pando Dance

                              Bhishma Kukreti

Pandon dance is performed everywhere in Kumaun and Garhwal and nobody can describe Garhwal-Kumaun culture leaving Pando dance-song
The style of wordings dialects, song and dance of Pando nach-gan vary from village to village. However, the following characteristics are main characteristics of Pando dance :
1-Mandan- The plain place where the Pando dance-song  is performed.
2- Ag /fire ; mostly fire is burnt in the centre of dancing circle and Aujis also perform rituals before fire before initiating playing the drums and singing the Jagar (Now fire is slowly going out of scene)
3-Saraun- The sword dance is performed at the time of Bhim and Arjun Bjaj dance and at the time of Draupadi-k Chaundo’
4- Draupadi ko chaundo- In this dance sequence, the dance is as if devi jagar dance is there because Draupadi becomes Chandi in the story. In ravain region, women also dance as ‘Chausath kaliyan’ (64 kalis) and women dance with swords in their hand
5- Varta- the story sung by Aujess about Pandavas
                 Psychological Aspect in  Draupadi Dance-Song

The following song is for Draupadi dance (but not Draupadi chandon). When the song is analyzed the readers will find that the creator created song with full of knowledge of psychology. Drupad the father of Draupadi is motivating his daughter Draupadi  for choosing her bride-groom from brave people (mall )
Draupad uses word ‘Drupadi’, thereafter he uses word ‘Beti’, in next stanza Drupad uses word’ Kwanri (unmarried) ’ and at last he uses ‘bala (daughter/girl of teen age) for calling Draupadi. The wordings and their uses in a particular step show the knowledge of folk song creators who were not educated in any school but they were knowledgeable and knew psychology of motivation.

The song is about Swayambar for Draupadi that she would choose her groom from Braver the most from braver (mal) . Draupad the father of Draupadi informs her about who are joining the Swayambar and Draupadi says what type of person she would choose.

Kadru and Binta Episode: A Religious Folklore of Uttarakhand influenced by Mahabharata

Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths of Kumaon-Garhwal, Uttarkahnd-2
                                        Bhishma Kukreti
Dr Mahendra Kumar Mishra (PhD) rightly states that Mahabharata and Ramayana influenced every culture in Indian subcontinent. Dr Mahendra Kumar Mishra (PhD) provides proves of influences of Mahabharata on the folklores of Parimalagiri, Gond,  Konds (Bugsas), Koyaput, of Orissa. There is total influence of Mahabharata on Cambodian folklores.
The research scholar Alexandra van der Geer, Michael Dermitzaki and John de Vos suggested the Mahabharata societies in Shiwalik shrine just below Himalayas (Fossils Folklore from India, The Shiwalik Hills and the Mahabharata, Folklore, April 2008). Therefore Mahabharata era  played  a great role in culture of Uttarakhand.
Mahabharata influenced the most the culture of Garhwal and Kumaon (Uttarakhand). That is why there are folklores based on the stories of Mahabharata.  Kadru-Binita folklore is one the examples of Mahabharata influence on Garhwali and Kumaoni culture.  The story of Kadru-Binita is taken from ‘Sauprnyakhyan’ of Mahabharata. However, the folklore creators created story with local culture.

Story of Kadru and Binta Folklore of Garhwal-Kumaon
Kadru and Binta were co-wives or Sautiya sisters.  Kadru was mother of Nag (snakes) and Binta was mother of Garud (eagles). They had Sautiya Dah (strong jealousy) between them. Once, Kadru asked Binta the color of Surya’s  Rath  (Sun’s chariot) as Binta’s son Bhanupankhi was chariot driver of Sun. Binta informed that the color of Sun Chariot is white but Kadru denied and said that the color of Sun Chariot is black. Both ended in betting for the colour of Sun Chariot. The bet was that whoever would lose would become the slave of winner of bet.
Kadru the mother of Nag (snakes) was worried as she was afraid of losing bet because the color of Sun Chariot was white. She called her son Kalgiri Nag and told her the incident of betting between her and Binta.  Kadru ordered Kalgiri to make Sun chariot as black. Kalgiri went to Sun galaxy along with his brothers and they all surrounded Sun. By the surrounding of snakes the Sun Chariot seemed as blackish chariot.
Happily Kadru called Binta and showed the black colored Sun Chariot. Binta lost the bet and told that from tomorrow she would be slave of Kadru.
Binta was sad as her step son Bhanupankhi (son of Kadru) informed in past that the color of Sun Chariot was white.
Mishri Garud (eagle) became restless in heaven (with lord Vishnu). He tells his boss lord Vishnu that there is something wrong with her mother and she is in some dire situation. Mishri Garud reached to his mother Binti but his mother did not show love for him. After perusal Binta told that his step brother Bhanpankhi deceived her and covered sun Chariot for showing black color and now she is slave of Kadru.  Mishri Garud. Misri Garud took the vow to free his mother from slavery of his step mother Kadru.
Mishri Garud reached to his step brother Kalgiri Nag and said,’” kalgiri! Why did you make my mother slave of your mother by deceit methods?’”
Kalgiri answered, If you bring Amrit kalash from heaven and give it us, we shall free your mother from slavery.”
Mishri Garud brought Amrit Kalash (Nectar Pot) to Kalgiri Nag. Kalgiri Nag became happy and decided to take Amrit after bathing. Kalgiri Nag went for bathing. In the mean time lord Vishnu came and advised to Garud that he should also deceive Kalgiri. As per advice, Mishri Garud took Nectar Pot to heaven and came back to Naglok.
When kalgiri came back after bathing he did not find the Nectar pot and he became angry on Mishri Garud. Kalgiri started attacking garud for battle. There was stif battle between Mishri Garud and snakes. Mishri Garud killed all snakes.
Kalgiri snake hid near Mishridah pond. A fish came near Mishridah pond. Mishri Garud killed that fish and its blood and flesh fell on a sage. The sage cursed Mishri Garud that if his shadow fells on the pond the Garud would die.
Lord Vishnu brough back Kalgiri Nag and told,” Nag and Garud! You all are brothers. You should live together with discipline. Garud should only kill a snake in a month. “

Sristhi Nirman: The Story about Universe creation and discussion on Cross Fertilization

Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths of Kumaon-Garhwal, Uttarkahnd-3
Religious and Mythological Folklores of Garhwal, Kumaon, Uttarakhand – 3

                                        Bhishma Kukreti
In every society, there are mythological stories about universe creation. Maori mythology states that the primal couple Rangi and Papa originated the world/universe.
There are many stories in Chinese mythology for creation the universe as Pangu separated world egg like Hudan the primordial chaos into heaven. There is also Chinese mythological story that Yin and Yang (female and male) are founder of world.
In earlier Egyptian mythology, the Goose came out of Milky Way and became source of universe creation.
Finish mythological epic Kalevala states that universe was created from an egg laid by divine duck on the knee of limatar –the goddess of air.
Greek mythology speaks that in the beginning there was chaos, an amorphous void encompassing the entire universe and surrounded by an un-leading water stream ruled by god Oceanus and then god created  Gaia (Mother earth)  heaven etc.
According to Norse Mythology, Fire and Ice Meeting is cause of universe creation.
In Philippine mythology, supreme God created world and earth. In one mythological story of Philippine tells that the universe was mad because of struggle among many forces.
There are mentions of universe creation in Vedas, Upnishads, Purans and other Sanskrit classics or later stage the Buddhist and Jain literature.
                         Garhwali-Kumaoni Mythology for Universe Creation
In Kumaoni -Garhwali folk literature as in Upnishads there is discussion on Universe as in Dhol sagar. There is also discussion on cross fertilization in Garhwali –Kumaoni folklores or in Garhwali folktales as in Champa dali.  The Srishti Nirman Gatha discusses the universe creation and importance of cross fertilization together.

The above Garhwali folk prose song is starting paragraph of universe creation. The further story about universe creation is as follows
In the beginning there was void and there was no earth, no sky and no water. The Goddess Parvati was bored by aloofness. Parvati requested God to create universe. Nirankar or formless created female eagle from dirt of his right thigh and created male eagle from the dirt of left thigh. The Name of Female eagle was Soni and male was Jambu. Shiva was shocked as he wanted to create human beings.
When Jambu (male eagle) became young he offered to marry Soni. Soni the female eagle became angry as they were brother sister. Jambu started weeping.  Soni  (female eagle) felt sorry for Jamboo (male eagle). She took tears of jambu (male eagle) and drank those tears. Soni (female eagle) became pregnant. Jambu (male eagle) went away from Kailas (where Shiva and Parvati live). Soni (female eagle) left kailas in search of  Jambu (male eagle) and at last she met Jambu. Soni eagle soothed Jamboo. Soni asked the place of delivering eggs. Bothe searched the place but could not find suitable place and came back to Kailas. Soni asked ‘Where to lay egg?” Jambu spread his wing and Soni laid egg on wing. However, the egg broke down. The upper white portion of egg became sky and lower egg portion became earth. The ocean was created by white portion and land by yellow yolk.  This way Nirankar created universe.

Many social and cultural historians state that Gajesingh the character of this folk song (Thadya Geet) was the son of great warrior Madho Singh Bhandari. However, there is mismatch between the two that Gajesingh Bhandari the commander of Garhwali kingdom was killed in a conspiracy. This character is killed by women.

Mother of Gajesingh advised Gajesingh not to go to Ranihat.
The mother says – we have decided the auspicious plough day.
O Gajesingh! You don’t go to Ranihat.
O Gajesingh! You are elite family’s son.
O Gajesingh! You are handsome young man.
O Gajesingh! Your ears have rings; your hands are full of metal rings.
O Gajesingh! Don’t go to Ranihat.
O Gajesingh! You would be killed by wicked women of Ranihat.
O Gajesingh! In past, your father was also killed by wicked women.
O Gajesingh! Our enemies are those wicked women.

The story is that Gajesingh goes to Ranihat and he was killed by wicked women.

                                        By: Bhishma Kukreti

The present story is related to brave Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari who dug the tunnel to bring water canal up to his village Maletha. Usually, Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari of Garhwal army and Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari of Maleth village are said to be same. However, the history does not match with folk sayings for two great personalities being same.

 मलेथा की कूल:  समाज सेवा गाथा
(Tal-Thadya Geet)

One day, Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari returned to his village from court. He was tired. Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari asked his sister in law for meal. His sister in law offered him bread without vegetable. Unhappily, he asked vegetable. Sarcastically, his sister in law tells that there is no water canal in his village that the villagers would enjoy vegetable a s spinach, onion, garlic and other green vegetables.
Madho Singh Bhandari felt insulted. He tells his sister in law to dig canal. She tells that it is the job of men to dig canal.
Second day, Madho Singh Bhandari reached to court. The court men insulted him that there is no water canal in his village.
Madho Singh Bhandari took vow to get water canal in his village.
There was a hill in between Chandrabhaga River and his village. Bhandari performed necessary rituals. Bhandari took necessary appliances and started digging tunnel to get Chandrabhaga water to his village Maleth. Slowly, slowly he started to cut hill for making tunnel. After watching his hard work, villagers also came to help him.
One day, he took his son Gaje Singh with him.  He and villagers were busy in cutting the hill for making tunnel. In the mean time a stone ascended on the head of Gaje Singh.  Gaje Singh died there only. He completed the work of tunnel making work on the same day.
Water started reaching to Maleth from Chandrabhaga River.
Now Maletha village was able to grow various types of vegetables and rice.

Madho Singh Bhandari is one the great Indian personalities who showed the world about taking cause till it is finished.

The folk literature creators of Garhwal and Kumaon were Vadi and Hudkya communities. Women used to create folk songs on their regional subjects and contemporary subject.
Landslides, flooding have been common in hills of Garhwal and Kumaon. There had been many folk songs about Himalayan disasters such as landslides, flooding, forest fire, cloud bursting etc from the ancient age.  However, such folk songs remained alive only if they became popular among people and had durability purpose.
The following folk song is based on true events of flooding in Nayar River at Satpuli, Pauri Garhwal. The flooding of Satpuli in August 1951 washed away land and hundreds of motors standing there.

There was order that the officer would check the components of motors
There was to bring all motors.
The officers informed that there would be checking next day.
 He advised to sleep.
While we were sleeping, there was a heavy rain.
The rain water reached up to roof of motors.
We were afraid.
The Nayar River flood washed away all motors.
O mother! Don’t weep for me.

The said folk song is still popular in Garhwal.

Kaliya Nag Jagar: Asian/Oriental Ritual Folk Song about Krishna Winning Kaliya Nag (Cobra)

Asian Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths of Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-69

Krishna’s activities are nearer to common man. Therefore Krishna influenced every society and Krishna became hero of every society. In Garhwal-Kumaon, Lord Ram is worshipped as ideal person, therefore less folk literature is created about Rama.
There are many folk songs, folklores, folktales and folk saying about Krishna in Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar.
One of the religious or ritual folk songs (Jagar) about Krishna is his winning to Kaliya Nag. The story has clear local color that Krishna advised Kaliya Nag to shift from Gokul to Uttarakhand.

There was a great snake Kali Nag in Kalidah tank into Yamuna. He had sixteen hundred queens. Once with his shepherd friends, Krishna was playing ball. The ball fell into Kalidah tank. Krishna jumped into Kalidah tank. His friends were afraid and ran away to village. Krishna’s mother Jasoda started weeping madly.

Krishna reached to court of Kali Nag. He played his flute. The sixteen hundred queens were attracted to beauty of Krishna.
All snake queens advised Krishna to return back as Kali Nag was very angry snake. Krishna told the queens he would go back only after taking gold ball with silver rings. The queens informed that the ball is into s mouth of Kali Nag who was sleeping. Queen snakes advised him that Kali Nag would flow his deathly poison on him. Krishna did not listen to snake queens. He put his hand into Kali Nag mouth and got the ball out. Kali Nag awoke. The great snake started stirring his fifty two mouthed hoods. Krishna rode on snake hood. Krishna won over the great snake kali Nag. Krishna started dancing over snake hood.
Kaliya nag reminded Krishna that he helped his father Vasudev crossing Yamuna when Krishna was born. Kali Nag reminded Krishna that he covered child Krishna by his hood. Krishna advised Kaliya Nag to leave Gokul and shift to Uttarakhand. Krishna blessed Kaliya Nag that Kaliya Nag family would flourish in Uttarakhand and Nag would be worshipped by people there.

The villagers with Nand and Jasoda came to Yamuna bank. They saw that Krishna was dancing on snake hood. Krishna came out of tank. Everybody was pleased.
Kaliya nag shifted from Gokul to Uttarakhand and flourished here. He is our God.
