Syu (Maiswag) ko Atank: Oriental Folk Song collected by Jim Corbett illustrating Terror of Man Eating Leopard
Folk Songs from Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-301
(Oriental, Himalayan Folk Song/Traditional Folktales/ Conventional Sayings Series)
By: Bhishma Kukreti
There had been a regular terror of man eating leopards in Garhwal and Kumaon from the human inhabitants came to hills.
In British rule over Uttarakhand, the terror of man eating Big-Cats was same as past. Colonel Jim Corbett (hunter turned conservationist, author) killed 33 leopards in British Garhwal and Kumaon. Jim Corbett was called Sadhu by Garhwalis and Kumaunis as he was savior from leopards.
Jim Corbett documented a folk song from Garhwal describing terror of leopard in his famous book ‘Man Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag’.
Still today, Garhwalis and Kumaunis do not call Bagh/Lion for Big Cat family but call either ‘Syu’ (he) or Dhirag etc. The following folk song sates ‘Syu’ for leopard.
