Gopeshwar is the administrative headquarters of the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand in India, on the international border with Tibet, China.

Located 1550 meters above sea level, it is famous for its weather (pleasant most of the year, but very cold in December and January) and its temples.

Gopeshwar is surrounded by four famous temples: Tungnath, Anusuya Devi, Rudranath, and Badrinath. The holy town of Kedarnath is also nearby.

A famous temple of Lord Shiva, now known as Gopinath Mandir, is situated here. A story tells of a king named Sagar (for whom a nearby village is named) who was there in ancient times. His cow always came to this place and gave his milk to a Shivling; one day Sagar saw it and he constructed a temple there.

about tungnath

Tungnath is located in Chamoli, a district of Garhwal, in Uttranchal, India. The Tungnath Temple, situated on Tungnath at an altitude of 3,680 meters, is the highest Shiva shrine among the Panch kedars. The temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Shiva is worshipped here as one of the Panch Kedars. It is believed that the temple was built by the Pandavas to appease Lord Shiva, who was enraged by the massacre on the battlefield of Kurukshetra during the Mahabharat war.

about anusuya devi
Anusuya (अनुसूया)  : Sati Anusuya was wife of the sage Atri and mother of Dattatreya (दत्तात्रेय) who is considered by some Hindus (in western India) to be an incarnation of the Divine Trinity Brahma, Vishnu and Siva
