History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -206
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -454

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

                            Sculpture in Garhwal
Carving development had been a continuous process in Garhwal. Shrinagar was famous for mud statues for Lord Ganesha, Garud, Bhairav and goddesses. Pilgrims used to buy these statues from Shrinagar or on the path of Badrinath. The artisans used to paste black color on these statues that the statues used to offer the scene of black hill stone.
Sculpture Makers used to cut the green –blue shadowed hill stone and used to make sculptures. However, the fineness in sculpture making in Katyuri Era was finer in Garhwal-Kumaon and diminished in Pal /Shah Era.  The Har-Gauri , Mahishimardani, Garud sculptures of Devalgarh, Ranihat and Shrinagar temples of Pal Era are inferior than sculptures of Katyuri Era.
Shrinagar was centre of sculpture making and trading too.  The Kingdom used to promote sculpture making and used to arrange salaries for sculpture makers. Garhwal Kings also built temples and established sculptures.
Metal sculptures of Deities and Goddesses was common and used to sell to pilgrims.

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)
Definitely, Katyuri kings would have promoted dance , music and songs as they promoted sculpture culture.
Mughal Emperors were lovers for dance, songs and other arts. There were famous dancers and singers in Mughal emperor’s courts. Influenced by Mughal culture, Hindu kings under Mughal Empire or free Kings also promoted dancers, singers. Hindu Kings also offered shelter to dance-singing music artisans.
Garhwal Kings were also protectors of dancers, singers and musicians. According to Manodaya Kavya, there were dancers, singers and musicians in the court of King Man Shah.
Shyam Shah the Son of Man Shah was musicians. Shyam Shah could differentiate among Rag and Raganis.  The artisans used to visit Garhwal Kingdom and Shyam Shah used to offer them valuables. The lover prostitute of Shyam Shah was an expert classical singer. Shyam Shah used to visit her after lunch with musicians.
Prithvipati Shah was also shelter providers to Musicians, artists.
Fate Shah had love for music. There was a Umag the poet and singer in court of Fate Shah.
Kriparam Dobhal the Mukhtyar or chief minister of Jai Krit Shah was also music lover.
Kings promoted Majlish. There used to be dance, singing in Majlish for late night. Shrinagar was famous for Muslim prostitute (dancers, singers etc). Garhwal Kingdom used to pay salaries to those prostitutes.
There were Dev Dasi –prostitute and female dancers in temples of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Tungnath, Gopeshwar, Kalimath, Ranihat, Devalgarh.
Ministers and Thokdars also promoted dancers and singers (Badi –Badan). They used to keep their own Badi-Badan and prostitute or keeper.  Court poet Maularam had a prostitute called ‘Lachami’ Pradyuman Shah snatched that prostitute from Maularam.
Hindu prostitutes were called ‘Rajni’. Muslim prostitutes were costly in Shrinagar. Muslim ambassadors coming to Shrinagar also demanded prostitute for their entertainment.
Apart from Hindustani classic, the Garhwal Kings also promoted folk dance, song and music.
In society community music, dances and songs were very common.

Geet Gaun Ka: Garhwali Lyrics Caring, Concern for Society and Environment
Critical Review of Garhwali Literature- 2287
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Review of Garhwali Lyric Collection ‘Geet Gaun Ka’ by Virendra Panwar
Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)
The Asian legend singer Narendra Singh Negi rightly said that present lyric collection will fill the gap of no or less lyrics in present n Garhwali Poetic world. Virendra Panwar is famous Garhwali poet and critics. The present lyric collection is about showing his concern for society, geographical and human environment. The lyric collection has freshness and lyrics are capable inspiring readers to think.
There are fifty four (54) lyrics in ‘Geet Gaun Ka’. The subject of each lyric is having different subject as worshipping (Sarswati vandana), new changes in Garhwal (Gadhwal Badalgya); philosophy of life (Pani); curses of alcohol consumption increase (Ghughti Ghuara Ghura); Political betrayal (Gairsain Dur); climate changes and its effects on society (Kafal); High urbanization and centralized administration in Uttarakhand (sabi Dhani Dehradun) and so on.  As Indian legend singer Narendra Singh Negi said that there is least love song in this collection of Virendra than other burning issues of common men.
The lyrics are outcome of lyrist own experiences of rural Garhwal. The lyrics are easily readable and understandable. Definitely readers would like to sing the song.

Virendra had been in his best for using old and newer phrases. Virendra Panwar uses figure of speeches and metaphors for offering speed to his poetries.

Poet has uses symbols and imagery for making lyric lucid and is successful.
Conclusively, the Lyric Collection ‘Geet Gaun Ka’ is easily readable and enjoyable too. The lyrics provoke readers to think about society and environment too.
The present lyric collection by Virendra Panwar is important collection for Garhwali Poetic World.
