Their lienage is traced back to king Bhoja of Malwa of Parmar dynasty.
It is   said that one of his decendent prince Kanakpal from saurashtra came
on pilgrimage to Devbhomi Uttarakhand and stayed back on the request of King Bhanupratap of Chandpur garhi (chamoli garhwal) and later married his daughter.
Most of the   Kunwars are settled in Chamoli Garhwal(Chandpur Patti). 
Kunwars belongs to the lineage of parmar kings of Garhwal.
They are spearhed in the popular Nanda Devi Raj Jat after every 12 years .
The last Nanda Raj jat of year 2000 was organised by
Dr Kunwar Rakesh Singh Of kaswan Village of Chamoli Garhwal.
