The following is one of the popular prayers for casting off the evil eye, demon, ghost, evil spirit, mischievous spirit or devil.
            The following prayer, ritual, service or rite is very popular in Garhwal and Kumaun. However, the mantra or folk rite for casting off the evil eye, demon, ghost, evil spirit, mischievous spirit or devil is not in Garhwali or Kumauni languages. The folk rite for casting off the evil eye, demon, ghost, evil spirit, mischievous spirit or devil is having names of various Islamic holy men. The names of Islamic holy men in folk rite for casting off the evil eye, demon, ghost, evil spirit, mischievous spirit or devil shows the effect of Islamic culture on Hindu culture and Garhwali-Kumauni culture.

फाड़ पीर को आदेशा, औत्या पीर को आदेशा, परिवाच्छा को आदेशा, नाद बुद्ध भैरों का आदेशा,
वार विथ्या वार वलाई को आदेशा, वारपन्थ सन्यासी को आदेशा, सूर्य चन्द्र पौन पाणी को आदेशा,
अघ्र्नाथ भैरों को आदेशा, ब्रह्मा बेदी माता कलिन्का को पुत्र को आदेशा, कलिन्का को पुत्र काल भैरों को आदेशा,

Ek Manthara Hainki: A Garhwali drama Criticizing Alcohol Consumption

(Review of a Garhwali Drama 'Ek Manthara Hainki' (2011) by Lalit Keshwan)

                           Bhishma Kukreti

                   Lalit Keshwan is famous Garhwali poet and is famous for transforming the style and subjects of Garhwali poetry in his time along with Dandriyal and Baulya. Lalit Keshwan wrote dramas too.
                The drama 'Ek Manthara Hainki' is about two aims. The playwright depicts a character Manthra who is backbiter. The playwright also aims to criticize the problem of alcohol consumption in villages. However, Lalit could not be successful in showing either perfectly.
     The playwright takes characters from real world, uses day-to-day dialogues and incidents are from real world of Garhwali village. However, drama is an average drama. The playwright did not use imagination to dramatize the situations. There is much work for director to bring the drama for staging.

हनुमान वीर लोह का सांगला तोड़न्तो आयो, , बज्र की कील मरंतो आयो, पीच्छे
भरन्तो आयो, हनुमंत वीर लोह का चाणा चावंतो आयो, हनुमंत वीर बेडी का
पार पड़ी आयो, हनुमंत वीर तुम दुःख लीजे, हम सुख दीजै, कितने वीर न तेरे
पीच्छे, बन्दों रहन करे , राखौ लोह का सांगला से तोई बंथो , ख़पर की लॉन्ग से तोई

                     Cross culture has benefits and negative effects too. When Garhwalis came in contact with other societies in plains they learn many positive aspects from other societies and adapted themselves for future benefits.  However, Garhwalis adapted a couple of negative custom from plains. One the dangerous custom is groom side taking dowry from bride side.  Garhwali Drama 'Audal' by Mohan Singh Bisht is about a couple of negative effects of cross culture specially Garhwalis adapting dowry custom. The drama is relevant till date. Mohan Sigh Bisht has been successful in dramatizing Garhwalis leaving their beneficial culture and adapting new unwanted culture in plains and in Garhwal as well. The characterization and dialogues suit the theme of bad effects of dowry.

     It is fact that in last century; most of the migrated Garhwalis of Delhi were in government jobs. It is not unnatural that those Garhwalis were having a bureaucratic mentality. Rajendra Dhashmana wrote a satirical drama 'Jankjod' (1975) on the bureaucratic mentality of migrated Garhwalis. The drama illustrates the obstructive ways of bureaucratic mentality being used also  in social work taken by migrated Garhwalis.
                  Staged in 1975 in Delhi,   'Jankjod' written by Rajendra Dhashmana and directed by Mohan Dandriyal is a mile stone in Garhwali dramas for making Garhwali dramas modern and more realistic. Dhashmana was successful in creating sharp satire on selfish mentality of human beings while taking social work or community work.

       There are many traditional rites, traditional rituals for casting off evil spirit, casting off devil spirit, practiced in Garhwal and Kumaun. The healer of casting off evil spirit or Bhoot pichas भूत-पिचास chants the mantra or traditional rites and does many other Tantrik performances.
  The following mantra or भूत-पिचास भगाने का  मंत्र is influenced by Islamic culture as there is mention of Arabic  Bhootani and the meat of pig for the devil. There are a couple of Garhwali words in the following folk rite for casting off evil spirit. 

कुमाऊं व गढ़वाल में प्रचलित उखेल मंत्र-३

ओउम नमो आदेशा, पूर्ब दिशा ते खिलकंदी मारंती आई, तू भैणी चंडी प्रचंडी छे,
तेरी क्या क्या पूजा छा, मेरी रात लाणों छ, तातो खणो छ, सुवर की बली, ढाई सेर की
मिठाई , खीचड़ी उखेल, उखेल रे बाबा उखेल, गली नली का बाण, जिकुड़ी का बाण उखेल,
बुकड़ी का बाण उखेल, सिर चडी पेट पडी तो , नौ तीस नारसिंग की दुआई, बूढ़ी अरबी
भूतनी का पाप जाई, क़ाली क़ाली कुखडी का बाण उखेल, तोतला भैणी तेरी क्या क्या पूजा छई,
रातो लाणो , तातो खाणो, मेढा कि बली लीन्दो छऊ, उखेल, रे बाबा उखेल, जिकुड़ी का बाण उखेल,
बुकड़ी का बाण उखेल, सिर चडी पेट पडी तो , कुम्भकरण काका का अमोल जाई , मेरा गुरु का दुआई ,
फोर मंत्र ऐश्वरो वाच्या
