Gangadwar or Haridwar and nearby places have been pilgrim places from Mahabharata Age.  There is Saptarishi Ashram and Saptarishi Sarovar in Haridwar, five kilometers from Hari-ki-Faidi (Paidi). The devotees do not forget visiting Saptarishi Ashram and Saptarishi Sarovar.
The Pauranic or epic story and Folktale tell the tale of seven great sages of ancient Bharat related to Gangadwar/Haridwar.
Seven great sages (Saptarishi) –Atri, Bhardwaj, Gautama, Jamadagni, Kashyapa, Vashistha and Vishwamitra were set to mediating near Ganges bank.  All seven sages were discussing the favorable conditions for meditation. Seven sages discussed the most favorable condition silence for meditation. Ganga River was listening the discussion of seven sages for silence as one of the favorable conditions for meditation.
Ganga respected the sages and their need of meditation. Ganga thought that if she would flow like that the sages would be disturbed by her flow sound.  Ganga split her into seven currents that sages are not disturbed.    This place where Ganga split her into seven currents is called Saptarishi Ashram and Saptarishi Sarovar.

Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar (Uttarakhand) in Epic Kumar Sambhav by Kalidasa

History of Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar (Uttarakhand) - Part 62

Historical Aspects of Classical Period of Haridwar -Kumaon-Garhwal (Uttarakhand), Himalayas-4
Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar (Uttarakhand) in Kalidasa Literature- part -2

(This History chapter up is dedicated to great historian Dr Shiv Prasad Dabral, Garhwali poet Sada Nand Jakhmola, Editor of Satyapath Lalita Prasad Naithani, Dr. Shiva Nand Nautiyal, Kunvar Singh Negi, 'Karmath', Srimati Kamla Ratnam, Banarasi Das Chaturvedi , Dr. Mayaram Uniyal  who did sound research on Kalidasa literature and Life)

                                                       By: Bhishma Kukreti
Kalidasa wrote about Himalaya (especially Central Himalaya) in his each drama and poetry collections.
The plot of Kumar Sambhava by Kalidasa is borrowed from Skandpuran. The story is about God arranging marriage of Shiva with Parvati that their son could beat demon Taraka. Kumara the son of Shiva and Parvati killed Taraka demon and restored the deity kingdom.
Kalidasa described today's Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) in his epic Kumar Sambhav) with details.  The depiction of central Himalaya by Kalidasa is such that many Kalidasa experts as Kamla Ratnam suggest that Kalidasa (Kalidasa and the problems of women in his time, referred by Dr Nautiyal) was born in Garhwal-Kumaon region.
In first part of Kumar Sambhava, in 14 shlokas, Kalidasa describes the natural beauty of Himalaya with grace and with lot of figure of speeches. Definitely, the description tallies with any part of Himalayas.
In the same chapter (part 1, 14 Shlokas) of Kumar Sambhav, Kalidasa portrays the epic faith about Himalaya, old sayings, old legends, mythology available in societies. Kalidasa explains that clouds have served the purpose of screen for doors of Himalayan-caves –dwelling Kiratas. It shows that definitely, Kalidas had depth knowledge of Himalayan clouds. In the sixth canto of Kumarsambhava, Kalidas discusses Koshi River. Describing Koshi River means the great poet knew the geography of central Himalaya with depth.   It is no surprise to historians that in ancient time the central Himalayan (especially upper central Himalayan) inhabitants used to worship Kumar or Kartikeya with enthusiasm (Pundit Murali Dhar Bhattarai, Birth Place of Kalidasa ( a Synopsis)).  Kartikeypur had been the capital of ancient Katyuri kings.

From 15th Shloka of first chapter of Kumar Sambhava, Kalidas illustrates the beauty of Himalaya where Bhagirathi and Ganga flow. The great poet states that there are cedar-auspicious pine trees in the region.
In the third chapter (sarg) of Kumar Sambhava, Kalidas discusses many events happening in the Gandhmadhan mountain (near Badrinath) region of Himalaya.
In sixth part of Kumarsambhava, Kalidasa describes Himalaya as human being. The great poet describes the medical herbs, Geru, cedar tress etc in this chapter.
In seventh and eight chapter of Kumarsambhava, Kalidasa discusses medical plants and beauty of Madrachal, Gandhmadhan and Kailas mountains. Kailas is part of Gandhmadhan shrines in Kumarsambhava epic.

Arjun Vasudatta Jagar: A Love Affair Folk Song/ Lyrical Folktale/Love Ballads
Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths of Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-48

Love Folklore, Folktales, Love Ballads. Folk Stories of Love, Adoring, Affection, Fondness, friendliness, Liking from Haridwar,   Garhwal, Kumaon (Uttarakhand) – 4

                                         Bhishma Kukreti
There is very popular story of Pando dance narrated by das/Aujees. The story is Arjun-Vasudatta love story. Arjun is sleeping with his queen Draupadi and in dream he sees the daughter of nag that is Vasudatta.
After awakening Arjun goes to Naglok, kills hurdling animals and meets Vasudatta.  Vasudatta is very beautiful girl and she also fell in love with Arjun. She keeps Arjun there and makes love.
Here, after three days, when Draupadi awakes, she does not find Arjun. She goes to mother Kunti to get help but Kunti accuses Draupadi for killing Arjun by her. Draupadi is in dilemma and a parrot tells her that Arjun is alive and is in love with Vasudatta. Listening good news Draupadi becomes happy but by hearing the love affair between Vasudatta and her husband Arjun, Draupadi feels envy too.
Vasudatta –Arjun story is a very good woven story with varieties of emotions in each line.

This folk song is proof that the folk song creative had full knowledge (if not from any formal school) of
  Rasa / rapture creation.
There are emotions as pleasure, dream, grief, anger, zeal, surprise, stunning, thrill, choking of voice, trembling, change of complexion, apprehension, envy, intoxication, fatigue, awe, depression, anxiety, delusion, illusion, agility, joy, agitation, arrogance 9here by Kunti) , dejection, eagerness, slumber, awakening, resolution, insanity, and deliberation of rapture of love (Shringar ras ke bahv) . In Shringar ras (rapture of love), there are all relevant emotions of Sambhog Shringar (Union) and Vipralambha (Separation)
In the same story, there is rapture of Chivalry (Veer Rasa) and there is description of energy, optimism, absence of surprise, and there are emotions of rapture of Chivalry as zeal, anger, intoxication, recollection, , contentment, joy , violence, thrill too.
The folk poetry creative had been wise enough to use figure of speeches very effectively.
The phrase used in this song  are very strong to create the desired images.
This is the reason that in Kumaun and Garhwal, Pando dance and song is very popular because there are very effective narration creating various emotions in one story as found in  Arjun-Vasudatta love story.

Jagar me Ahvahan: Initial Awakening Chant in Ravain Jagar Gatha (Ritual Folk Songs)

Jagar Gatha (Folk Ritual Songs) from Ravain Garhwal Region-1

Original Script by late Dr. Jagdish Prasad 'Jaggu' Naudiyal
Translation, Interpretation and Transliteration by: Bhishma Kukreti

                                            Brief about Jagar

Garhwali Kumaoni Gathas are religious myth those are narrated in specific ceremony called Jagar. M.R. Anand rightly explains Jagar through  quotes of Allan C. Fanger ," Jagar is spirit possession ceremony (Ghadyal or Mandan) in which a designated deity/goddess or group of deities/goddesses is induced by ritual drumming and singing of traditional devta legends to possess a pre arranged oracle or medium" . The Jagar are arranged for disease cure, requesting deities for specific demand etc.
The priest of Jagar, the Jagriya/Jagri (Bard) is narrator of Jagar folk dramas and rituals. Jagriya narrates the legends and control the ritual ceremony. There is no caste restriction for being Jagriya. Usually, Jagriya plays bronze thali and his associate Jagriya plays Daunru (drum). Main Jagriya or Jagri sings narration and associates sing the last line of stanza (Bhaun pujna).
Always, before narration of story of decided legends or deities the Jagari/Jagriya initiate a few lines of awakening chants those are called Avhahan lines or calling deity lines.
In Ravain, Uttarkashi Garhwal, usually Jagri or Jagriya starts the following initiating lines for Jagar narration

Kankhal (Haridwar) in Meghdootam by Kalidasa

The epic Meghdootam describes the pain of separation of a Yaksha from his beloved. Yaksha send the cloud as messenger to his beloved. Yaksha states that cloud would go from Kurukshetra to Kankhal (Haridwar).
Kalidasa describes Kankhal in Meghdootam (Purvamegha, 53-54) as -
O Cloud! From Kurukshetra you should go to the daughter of Jahnu Ganga descended from Himalayas near Kankhal a stairway to paradise for sons of Sagar...
O Cloud, going onward from Kurukshetra, you will reach a holy place named Kankhal. Ganga flows near Kankhal. Ganga descended on Himalayas from sky and appearing like a flight of steps for Sagar .....
O Cloud, if you wish quarter elephant twisting /bending low the front part of his body with the trunk to drink water of the Heavenly Ganga in the sky, you were longing drinking in slanting manner crystal clear Ganga water flowing by Kankhal. Your shadow on Ganga near Kankhal would look like confluence of Yamuna and Ganga. The River Ganga carries all our stories along with her sacred flow. Bathe on her bosom. Like all mother Ganga washes all pains. Ganga flows for forever.

                                    Himalayas in Meghdootam by Kalidasa

There is importance of Ashadha month in central Himalaya. Kalidasa paid attention of first day of Ashadha in Meghdootam.
Kalidasa in Meghdootam describes that the Himalaya is standing tall in glory and snow. King of all kings Himalaya glitters with greatness. Kalidasa describes various shrines of central Himalaya as the birth place of Ganga (Alaknanda). From 57th to 67th chapters of Meghadootam, Kalidasa illustrates beauty and reality of Himalaya based on description of described in Mahabharata and Puran. There is description of Kailas (near Badrikashram, Gandhmdhan of Mahabharata). Kalidasa describes the prosperity of Alkapuri with unbelievable prosperity in figurative language.
Kalidasa becomes sentimental when he describes Alka (birth place of Alaknanda River, Gandhmadhan near Badrikashram)

Fyunli Rauteli –Bhupu Raut Jagar Gatha: The Love Folk Song Resisting Inter caste Marriage

Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths of Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-49

                                         Bhishma Kukreti

Commonly, the difference between a general Garhwali-Kumaoni love folk song sung in alone or in community events and Jagar love song is that in Jagar love song tales, the religious rituals are there while in general category love folk songs the religious rituals are seldom found.
The present folk song is Jagar folk song of Kumaon and Garhwal. Now days, the song is not sung. The story seems to be of ancient time as Nag Vansh is described in this Jagar love song. There is tension in this love Jagar song due to inter caste marriage proposal.
This Love Jagar song has an exclusivity that the creator spent more time on describing the beauty of the heroin than spending more time on events. That is why this Jagar is sung only in between the Jagars of designated deity Jagars.

It is early morning. We remember all gods and goddesses. Wake up!  The girls and women! Because you all have to go for crushing grains. Wake up girls! You have to carry water from water source.
There was a Sabaryal nag in Saunrikot. His daughter was beautiful Fyunli. Sun was on her chest and moon on her back. She was softer than butter. She was softer that she could not put her feet on the earth. She was brighter than Sun. Her hairs were as black snake. Her nose was sharp. Her womanhood was attractive.
Fyunli became ready and did her make up by ornaments. Fyunli was walking towards water source (Pandhyar). She was with her maid servants.
She started filling her pitcher. She saw the shadow of a young man. The shadow was of Bhupu Raut playing flute on the tree. Bhupu Raut was her lover. Bhupu Raut played his flute and Fyunli lost her conscious by the music. Bhupu came down from tree and started love making with her. They forgot the time.
When both came in conscious state it was night. Fyunli started walking towards her house. Her father Sabaryal nag was angry as flames of fire.
She told about her loving to Bhupu Raut. Sabaryal was again angry as Bhupu Raut was non nag Vanshi.  Fyunli told that if she would not marry with Bhupu Raut she would do suicide hanging her.
Sabaryal became ready after high perusal from his daughter Fyunli. This way, both Fyunli and Bhupu Raut got married.

Chalda Masu Jagar: An Awakening Ravain Folk Ritual Song related to Masu deity

Jagar Gatha (Folk Ritual Songs) from Ravain Garhwal Region-2

Song collection by late Dr. Jagdish Prasad 'Jaggu' Naudiyal
Translation, Interpretation and Transliteration by: Bhishma Kukreti

                                                  What is Jagar?

Most of the researchers define Jagar in the same way except same words.
Stefan Patrik Fiol defines Jagar," Jagar also called 'Jagran' may be defined as a ritual or 'puja' in which 'Devi-Devta' are awakened through narrative musical performances either metaphysically or physically through the body of the medium. Possession by 'Devi-Devta' is not prerequisite for 'jagar'". Stefan further says that." I consider 'Jagar' are ceremonies that are organized with the intent to induce possession."
There are at least five active participants in a 'Jagar'-
1-Pashwa or the medium on which the 'devi-devta ' soul would enter
2-Jagriya –or Guru who will narrate the story and control the ceremony
3-Musicians to accompany Jagriya/Jagari
4-Host
5-Dancers other than Pashwa or audience

Gotha Masu Jagar: Folk Song/Folktale Ritual from Ravain

Jagar Gatha (Folk Ritual Songs) from Ravain Garhwal Region-3

Song collection by late Dr. Jagdish Prasad 'Jaggu' Naudiyal

Translation, Interpretation and Transliteration by: Bhishma Kukreti
The life, beliefs, and rituals are reflected on traditional folk songs of Ravain region of Uttarkashi, Garhwal. The folk music culture is mixture of exclusively folk music of Ravain region and folk music of general Garhwal. Same applies for religious deities. Ravain region (Uttarkashi) has their own exclusive deities which are not in other parts of Garhwal and Ravain (Uttarkashi) region has also Hindu deities of Garhwal.  The religious folklores of Ravain (Uttarkashi) are creative, spiritual and cultural heritage of the Khas and Kirat culture handed down by oral methodology for centuries.

                                    Gotha Masu deity of Ravain

The present Jagar is about another form of major deity Masoo from Rawain region of Garhwal. Gotha Masoo is incarnation of Bharat the brother of lord Rama Chandra. Gotha is very peaceful deity from of Masu. Gotha Masoo deity does not require animal sacrifice for ritual performance.  Gotha stays at 'Anhol 'place. The deity Gotha Masu is just witness of Kingdom of elder brother Chalda Masu.
