Raghuvir Singh Rawat 'Ayal': A poet of realism and satire

Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry –-70
                    Literature Historian:  Bhishma Kukreti
        Raghuvir Singh Rawat 'Ayal' was born in Ayal village, Padalsyun of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Rawat expired in 2011.
Critics appreaciated his poetry collections 'Guthyar' and 'He Guthyar'
      Raghivir Singh Rawat   'Ayal' is more famous for his adding 'Guthyar' word (chauk, Courtyard) in the last line of his Garhwali poetry.  Though Ayal is versatile poet, but was famous for his sharp satire and attacking on our social, political or cultural behavior. The poem attacks on policies makers and then taking advantages of those policies through encroaching other's rights. The use of figures of speech by phrases makes the poem timeless.
   Rawat uses common phrases for making poetries enjoyable, easy for understanding and comforts for readers. He adopted newer style as dandriyal et all adopted.
The following poem is an example of his attacking on social behavior and his power of vocabulary

छौला कू
हमरा पल्ला पड़ी
सिरप किराण
ऐंस्या रैग्या हम
हमरी घिमसाण
लगी टपराँण
कि बाबा आलो
हडगी ल्वतगी
कुछ त लालो
पळयाण ह्व्ला दांत
पैनाणा ह्व्ला हत्यार
ये गुठ्यार

कबि ये हाड़ कबि  वे हाड़
फंचु बदलणा छौं /कबि ये कांध कबि वे कांध
हमथैं बि कन नि मिलदि /द्वी गज जमीन
अगर नि कट्यां हूंद /हमरा अपण जलुड़ अफी- अफी   

बदलणा छौं मूसु सी
कबि ये दुलण कबि वे दुलण
छुड़ी छीं स्वर्ग सी /सुंदर हिंवळी डांडि  -कांठि 
कन नि मिलदि हमथैं बि /थाह थाति कि छाती कि
अगर नि बण्यां हूंदा हम बडु आदिम
खुट्टा अळगाकि अफी -अफी

फुंडु धुळयां छन
चिर्यां झुल्ला सी बूड -बुड्या
पिछनै सरकयलीं

           Trail was strict in collecting tax from Malgujar. On the last land settlement, Trail experienced that quite a few Padhan of Lobha Patti were not depositing tax in time and villages were becoming baron.  The village chiefs reported that the villages were surrounded by dense forests and wild animals harm the farming. Therefore, the villagers were leaving villages. However, Trail was of opinion that villagers were lazy. Trail assumed that the Malgujar wanted exemption from tax. Mostly, the Jamindar /Malgujar of that region got land for their defense services in Garhwal Kingdom and Gorkha rule. Trail cancelled the Patta of Lobha region. Trail did an agreement for many villages of Lobha Patti with 'Thepdu' from Khetsar Patti of Kumaon adjacent to Lobha Patti (Batten). He ordered that the Lobha Patti is handed over to Thepdu from Lobha Jamindar. Trail did not place written order.  Trail appointed Thepdu as Patwari of Lobha too for increasing his power. Thepdu neither could settle villagers in the villages nor could he collect tax from the region. Ultimately, Thepdu had to return his region in Kumao.

छमछम हिट छँछड्यूं को पाणी पेइ औंला।

चमचम हिमालै को चांदी सी बरफ 
झिलमिल झिलमिल झिलमिल छाया चौ डांड्यूं तरफ
हिलांस की जोड़ी बणी , उड़ि उड़ि जौंला।

धरति का ओर छोर कन सजीला -छबीला
रंग -रंगीला काया द्याखो , फ्यूंळि  का फूल पीला
बाँसुरी का स्वर सरगम मा  गीत बणि जौंला। 

घस्यर्यूं के मन मा टीस।  उदास उदास
तिसळि आंख्यूं मा झणि कैकि होली आस
ऊंठड़ियूं कि तीस बुझौला , आस बणि जौंला।

छळछळ - छळछळ  मन प्राणु की छळकदी सि धार
कैई जल्मूं की प्रीत मेरी , कइ  जल्मूं को प्यार
अगास क बीच  कखी , दूर लुकि जौंला।

          British high command appointed F.J. Shore as joint district magistrate and revenue commissioner of Dehradun on 24th October 1822. Dehradun was part of Saharanpur Commissioner. In 1824, Shore sent a letter to his superiors that the people of Dehradun are not civilized as people of plains. The regulations for plains did not suit to hill men of Dehradun. The Company government put Dehradun under Kumaon commisisonary by regulation 21 of 1825. The proposal was as –
   "There will be a provincial officer under Kumaon commissioner. Dehradun, Chandi  Pargana of Garhwal – Gangasalan, Chaundkot, Barasyun, Devalgarh, Nagpur for criminal and tax collection will be under provincial officer.  The officer will tour the said region for administration. It is advised that he will keep court in Dehradun from May to October and from November to April in Shrinagar. By that administration, the hill people could contact the officers easily. Hill people could contact officers in Dehradun too."
The government fixed Rs. 1500 the monthly salary for Shore and monthly salary for Trail Rs 2500. Government offered additional responsibility of Dehradun for Trail. Government connected Chandi under Shrinagar- Dehradun.
  Shore conducted sixth land settlement of Shrinagar Tehsil for next five years. Shore informed that Garhwal farmers had difficulties in selling their agro products as there was no market for them. The farmers of Tallasalan were more progressive in changing hill land into farm land.(Atkinson)
    The union of Dehradun with British Garhwal did not last more than four years.  By regulation – 5 of  1829, Dehradun was put under Meerut Davison.   Chandi Pargana remains under Kumaon.

Balwant Singh Rawat is one of the prominent figures of Garhwali literature in poetry and dramas.
Balwant Rawat has been publishing his poetries, lyrics and Ghazals in magazines and periodicals. Nazibabad radio station relayed his poems regularly.
   Rawat is famous for illustrating Garhwal life.
Balwant published a Garhwali poetry collection Garh-Gitika.

     Balwant Singh Rawat is a famous name among Uttarakhandis in Chandigarh as social worker, as stage planner and implementer. He was also involved with D D Sundariyal for promoting Garhwali dramas in Chandigarh and arranged staging more than twenty Garhwali dramas in Chandigarh besides arranging Garhwali cultural programs. He was devoted Garhwali dramatist as lyric writer, director and performer too.
  Born in Jamari ( Khatali, Pauri Garhwal) in 1935,  Balwant Singh is also well known figure for creating   Garhwali language poetries and he was awarded twice by Punjab Government for his creation of poetries.
     His collection of Garhwali language poetries "Garh Gitika" was acclaimed by critics and readers with same respect.
  There are nineteen poems in Garh Gitika by Balwant Singh .
Every reader will like this stanza, wherein Rawat says that since, he is not Badshah Shahjahan who could built Tajmahal, he will offer an unique  present to his mother land that is  Garh Gitika a collection of Garhwali verses.
Chuni rain phool kab bati preeti ka
Rang nyara chhai preeti ki riti ka,
Savannah hundo !me bi banado mahal--
Kavi chhaun 'bhent' kardu ya  "Garh Gitika"
Stuti: is the poem of praying Sarswati and Laxmi as for any huma being knowledge and resources are equally important
Jagran: As the name suggests Jagran is about awakening long poem for the Garhwali society
Dunya dyakha, afu tain pachhyana
Tumaro nam karnu chhaun uchyana
Khud:  khud is a memoir of Garhwal by a migrated Garhwali who left his village in childhood in search of job for making his family prosperous. Balwant tries to make it pathos. "Khub huin che " is also of same pattern of poem
Jeewan Ek Paheli , mi Bhagwan ni chhaun  is philosophical poem and somehow preaching poem too
Ansu peen chandu is a poem of  pathos rapture and a life sketch of poet making pattern
Kilai runi rai tu poem is a love poem and "Mi Unthain pyar kardu",  Bhatuli, "Mi Thain Bhulaik Rwala" , "Unku Viyog", "Ansu', 'Tab samjhali ' are  sad love poems
' darama hunu cha" is a poem based on badi- badan style lyric and well written by Rawat
Ja Garhwal  is an inspiring poem for reverse migration
Garh ek parichay is description of geography and society of village of poet jamali (khatali), while hamro Desh is praise of Garhwal area
  Rawat does not believe in experimentation and his style of poems are based on conventional poetry, chaunfala, badi badan styles .
  Rawat stresses on more on emotions, spontaneity, preaching, idealism, naturalism, existentialism and does not touch at all to new form, expressionism, surrealism, romanticism, neo classicism.
Rawat used the symbol, images, proverb , figures of speeches all from Garhwal.
  The language of all poems is simple and understandable by normal Garhwali .Most of the poems are in lyric form and enjoyable
  Conclusively, the poems of Balwant Singh Rawat are the poems written by a migrated Garhwali in memoir of his motherland, which is far away from him

मन्नु गौ जन मनिख छौ। वु दगड़्यों कS पल्ला पोड़ि त वे फर वूंकि भामि लगि ग्या। मन्नु थैं वु जक्ख भट्यांदा वु तक्खी दन्कि जांदु छौ। स्यु दगड़ा बान जक्खि-कक्खिम् फुंद्या बंणि जांदु छौ। पखंणा छन बल कि मि कर्दु देसै मेस अर मै कु हूंदु चल्यूं (चालु) कु भेस।
भलि कंगस्या (कामना) लेकि यु सौब भलु कन चांदु छौ। भल्यार कना दंदोळम् मन्नु सब्यूं कु ऊपि (नापसंद) बंणि ग्या। दगड़्या ऐका पैथर रांदा अर यु ऐथर। जक्ख कड़ु ब्वन्नै नौमत आंदि त मन्नु अफी ऐथर ऐ जांदु छौ।
मन्नु अपड़ा चित स्ये इन चितांदु छौ कि वे का दगड़्या वे कि पुलबैं कैरSला। पंण वु त पीठि पैथर वे कि कौलि कर्दा छा। कंद्वरा (कै कि गुप्त बात ) सुंण वळा मन्नु थैं बिंगाणी लग्यां रांदा छा कि स्यु त तन च, वु त यन च।
तौबि मन्नु यूं कु दगड़ु नि बिरै साकि। दगड़्या चकड़ेति कैरुन् अर मन्नु अपड़ा सकळा ध्यौ ले कि यूं कS ऐथर-पैथर रौ। जक्खम दगड़ा बान मुकरंगै(लड़ै-झगड़ा) कनौ घत आंदु त स्यु आँखा बूजी फक्कम् मुकरंगै कर्दु।
मुकरंगै कर्दि दां दगड़्या सुरक--सुरक मुक लुकांण बैठिनि। पाछ बींगि द्या मन्नुन् सैरि सार-तार। वे कS घटपिंडौ सकळु मनिख बि सुरक घटपिंडै लुकि ग्या। ब्वादन बल कि अब मन्नु बि अपड़ै दगड़्यों जन चंट-चकड़ेत ह्वे ग्या।
