Mahesh Tiwari: A Garhwali, Poet, Lyricist and Singer

     Mahesh Tiwari had been a prominent figure of composing music for Garhwali plays staged between eighties and twenties in Delhi . However, Mahesh Tiwari  was also a poet and his poems are emotional, melodious, with realism and many poems are so provocative that the readers feel restlessness. Most of his poems are in tune of Geet style . Mahesh used pure Garhwali words and avoided to use Hindi words in his poems.
           Mahesh Tiwari was born in a Himalayan village Pokhari, Patti Sitounsyun of British Garhwal (Pauri Garhwal) in 1943. Mahesh Tiwari got music and lyric training from Dharni Dhar Chandola the famous Garhwali music director, innovator of music instrument -Vichitra Bela and a painter.
   The people never forget the services of Mahesh Tiwari  for providing music to tens of Garhwali dramas and cultural programs as Ardhgrameshwar , Lati ko Byau, Dyur Bhauj staged in Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur Mumbai etc. Akashvani relayed many musical programs and poems of Mahesh Tiwari. Mahesh worked with Akashvani till his death on 14th December 1997. Mahesh Tiwari had been a very famous poet of Garhwali Kvisammelans too .
         Mahesh Tiwari created many Garhwali Geet for cultural programs and Garhwali plays. Mahesh wrote more than hundred poems but he could never publish his lyrics  and poems in his life time. However, Garhwali Sahitya Parishad Kanpur published fifty three poems of Mahesh Tiwari by the name 'Vedi Ma ka Vachan'.
       Mahesh Tiwari  created poems of varied subjects as ruining of villages due to migration, fast declining of the cultural values and idealism in he society, destruction of natural environment ,geographical beauty of Garhwal , inspiriting poems, Uttarakhand separate state movement, relationship -importance and reality of breaking the old culture about relationship. Mahesh always, tried to be near realism and avoided unnecessary intellectual fantasy creation his poems.
          His poem about Ganga is an example of his innovative thinking and creating provocation through realism in life. Most of Garhwali and even Hindi/Sanskrit poets of Garhwal or elsewhere praised reverend rive Ganga but Mahesh revealed a new aspect of Ganga for Garhwalis
aryaun ku lagai hola tin amrit ki dhara ssss
Bhag ma hamari aini tera dhunga ar gara sssss
Tu che bal s matami kilai boli hola badon
Kya kam aun hamari , bol tera ganglwadan sssss
The poet says that though Ganga have been eternal river for Aryans , Ganga have been a reverend river , Ganga have been a source of water for half of Northern and eastern India but for Garhwal, Ganga is worthless and provide stones and stones.
Mahesh also took clue from exclusive style and subject of Garhwali folk song Baramsa and wrote poems on those lines too.

His style is limited to Geet and melody has been the primary objective of Mahesh Tiwari . In a couple of case, Mahesh seems be influenced by Expressionism but most of his poems are influenced by realism. Mahesh Tiwari never avoided poems  making them melodious.
Mahesh is the master of creating emotions, pathos, love in the reader's mind and narrating geographical beauty of Garhwal.

लौंकि जांद कुएडी स्य बरसात मा ।

वखि रौंद  मेरि देवी राजेश्वरी
वींकि  छाया हमकू हरीं च भरीं
कुणजा दुबला  का फूल चढ़दन वख
ट्वखणी पाणी कि   रौंद थमी हात मा।

ऋतू बौड़ी आंदन बारा बनी
गाड गदन्यूँ  स्वींसाट होंद तनी
सौण भादों कि  बरखा का झुमणाट मा   
बिजली घाम लगौंद जनू  रात मा।   

मेल्वड़ी बासदन डाँड्यूं चैता मासा
उचि डाँड्यूं मा जमदु हौरु हौरु  घास
मैता कि बेटी सैसुर जांदन जबा
कंडी कलेउ थमीं रौंद हात मा।

उचि डाँड्युं कि गोदि  मा
लौंकि जांद कुएडी स्य बरसात मा ।

स्वांग दुन्या के देखी
किलै हूंदी औळ बौळ
जाणि ले तु बींगी जा

सौंजड्या तेरु रूप दुःख -दलेदर
तिडीं ग्ल्वड़ि अर हलकदी बाली
कुतरण्या लारों मा सुवांदी छ।

तेरा जिंड्या लटल्यूं मा
अळझ्याँ छन रिश्ता नाता
कखरळयूं पसीनै बास
छळे देंद कस्तूरी थैं।

आड़ा ब्याड़ा झुलड़ा
हथगुळो का चिरखा
अर बगत्यड़याँ हथ खुटा
आकार देंदी मन्था थैं।

पितम्वरी मुखड़ी को सकळोपन
लाल उणीन्दी आंख्यूं का स्वीणा
नि करदा स्याणी -गाणी
बस टुप सियां रन्दन
तेरी काळी गति का प्याट
लुक्यां वे ग्वारा मन मा।

            It was difficult for drawing village maps and measuring area. Batten was unable for land settlement as per Regulation -9 polices. Batten informed that he could not complete land measurement before two years. Batten informed too that the expenditure for land measurement would be more than tax collection. Batten also reported that in the absence of measurement, there will be always conflicts among stakeholders. (Batten, Pauri report). British Government postponed measurement because of expenditure and time.  Government instructed Batten that it was not important for tax increment but a stable settlement system for next twenty years was more important.
Till 1833, numbers of Patwari were very less in Garhwal. Patwaris did not have exact farming land records (Fardfant). Batten prepared Fardfant (records for farming land). With difficulties, Batten prepared 'Halatnama' (Present situation) for each village. Batten prepared land settlement from 1820 to 1840 and he included following issues into settlement records (Atkinson, page 292)-
1-Village name and details
2-Names of Padhan (Village Chiefs) from 1820-1840
3- A village under a real Thok. That work was difficult
4- When the village was transferred from one real Thok (Dakhila Mauja) to other real Thok
5- Tax collected from last 7 settlements each
Batten put the villages under the real Thok (dakhila) as it was. He accepted separation for a village only when the majority favored the change.
Batten, then instructed 'Padhan' for agreement for coming twenty years (beesi) with new records. Batten prepared policies too.

   Atma Ram Faundani 'Kamal' is profound scholar of Garhwali, Sanskrit. Atma ram 'Kamal' created many books on Sanskrit and Garhwali. He translated Sanskrit poems in Garhwali.
  Atma Ram Faundani was born in 1944, Kafild-Pali, Dagar Patti of Their Garhwal.
Atma Ram Faundani 'Kamal' is famous in Garhwali literature for creating a long poetry Shri Govind Geet.

      Yogesh Pathari did not create many Garhwali poetries. Whatever he created Garhwali Poems are marvelous pieces.
  Yogesh Panthari published famous book 'Garhwal Rifles. Yogesh Pathari and Swarup Dhoundiyal were founder editors of Alaknand Magzine . Alaknanda had been an important medium of publishing Garhwali language literature.
   Yogesh Pathari was born in 1945 in Lansdowne Tehsil of Pauri Garhwal.

खुलिगे सरग चलणू बताऊँ
डांडी सुकीली , खल्याणी सराऊँ
छ्वटि छ्वटि  गदनि घुंघरू बजौणी
बsड़ि बsड़ि गाडs ढोलू थाप
रौलों को स्वींसाट सिणई सि बाजा
छंछडों को छमछ्याट होणु च आप
भजदि कुएड़ी ढळकीं दमाली
निमड़ोदो घाम गदबदी गैरी
सूरजल जन सपकु सरकायो
मुलकंदि  मुखडी च  डैरि  डैरी
चखुल्यूं कि  डार असमान उड़दीं
रजबाटो जांद कै गौं को बासो
हफराट करदीं लंग लंगी डाळो 
  स्वाणि गितार जन करदs सांसो   
अच्छांद सूरज की छाप बिंदी
चांदी सि गैण जन छ्वया रौली
रंगीन मुंडेड़ी बांधीं घणेट
डांड की सार्युं क्वी ब्योली होली       
तिगबंद सी कखि तिरछी दिवाल
कखि धार धार हार माला
कखि कखिम मा छन जन मूंग मोती
काजोळ लाजोळ छुबडळि  छाला
धार धार डाळो की लम्बी लंगेत
बरात जाणी  जन कैइ गौं
अच्छांद घाम कन छिं लगणा
फरड़ा सरैयां  ढोल दमाऊ

हमरा ही लट्ठों से ,हम्थेय की लठियाणा छीं वू लोग
हमरा ही म्वालौं थेय लगैऽक ,गिच्चौं फर हमरा
छुईं हमरी ही कन्न लगाणा छीं वू लोग


सरया जिन्दगी बाटू दिखाई जौं लोगौं

बाट हम्थेय ही आज कन्न बिरडाणा छीं वू लोग

खाई सरया जिन्दगी जौंल गाड- गाडीऽक पैन्छु

हम्थेय ही आज डडियाणा छीं वू लोग


खुच्चिलियुं मा ख्यलीं ब्याली तक जू हमरी


खण्ड कन्ना कन्ना हम्थेय ही आज खिलाणा छीं वू लोग

जू बुथैं बगत बगत थमथ्याकि हमुल

कन्न आज हम्थेय ही ठगाणा छीं वू लोग



जौंकी मुखडी आश देखि काट सरया जिंदगी हमुल

कन्न मुखडी आज सर्र हमसे ही लुकाणा छीं वू लोग

जौं थेय रौं पिल़ाणु दूध ,खून अप्डू सोचिक

कन्न गुरा बणिक आज हम्थेय ही तडकाणा छीं वू लोग



सैंती पालि कैरी ज्वान जू

बोझ हम्थेय ही आज बताणा छीं वू लोग

जौं का बाना पूजीं ढुन्गा सरया दुनियाऽक

ढुन्गु समझिक उन्दु आज हम्थेय ही चुलाणा छीं वू लोग


दिन चार पैदा हूँया , जौं थेय नि व्हाई अज्जी

औकात ब्वेऽक आज पुछणा छीं वू लोग

मी छौं हिमालय ,प्राण -भाल भारत कू ,

यी च बस परिचय म्यारू

मिल सुण सफेदपोश व्हेकि अज्काल

दिल्ली -देहरादूण मा

मेरी "ब्वै" का खैरी का आँसू छन ई,
म्यरा संभाली का धरयाँ छन ई, अपणी आँख्यूं मा।
अपणी खैरी काटणा कु।
अपणु बाऽलापन बटै ब्वै थै खैरी खांदू द्यखुदू ग्यौं मि,
अर यूँ आँसू थै एकैक कैक संभल्दी ग्यौं मि।
हमरा दुख मिटाणा का बाना खूब घिस्या ब्वै,
गरीबी का पाटों का बीच खूब पिस्या ब्वै,
हमथैं गुड़ा की ठुँगार देकी, अफु फीकी चा पेद्या,
अफु बाड़ी ख्या ब्वैन अर हमथै भात कु गफ्फा देद्या।
ग्वीराऽला कू डाऽल मा बटी, पत्त भुयाँ प्वाड़,
रूणी रयाई सरया रात बैठीक एक कुणा कु छ्वाड़।
वीं खैरी का आँसू छन ई,
म्यरा अपणी आँख्यूं मा संभाली का धरयाँ छन ई।
पटऽला सरीन लुखुंका ब्वैन भारू मुन्ढुमा ल्यान्दी देखी,
गात की ध्वतड़ी पस्यौ मा, खूब कैकी तरपान्द देखी।
खुदेड़ गीत सुणी ब्वै थेै, मैत्यौं भेंटेकी रौंदी देखी,
"बाबा" थै याद कैकी, यखुली-यखुली सिसकांदी देखी।
मुन्डरू मा भी पाणी कु बंण्ठा, नांगा खुट्यूँ ल्याँदू देखी,
मुन्ढुमा झुल्ला बाँदी ब्वैथै पीड़ा मा कणादी देखी।
वी खैरी का आँसू छन ई,
म्यरा अपणी आँख्यू मा संभाली का धरयाँ छन ई।
अपणु माथाकु ढिकणु बी ब्वैन, हमुरू मथि डाऽल द्या,
पुरूणी ध्वतड़ी दुवरू कैकी, सरया रात काटी द्या।
गौड़ी मार बाघन, बुख्ठया थै भी लीग्या,
स्वीणा टुटीन ब्वै का, खूब कैकी फटकरैग्या।
कैन बोली तुम पर देव्ता, कैल छ्वलै द्या,
पुछ्यरा मा भाग ब्वै, वैन भी वी दोष बतै द्या।
साग जतास कु पैसा नि छ्या,
पर पैंछू-उधार कैकु ब्वैन, देव्ता भी पुजै द्या।
वीं खैरी का आँसू छन ई,
म्यरा अपणी आँख्यूं मा धरयाँ छन ई।
मेरी ब्वै का खैरी का आँसू छन ई,
हाँ मेरी ताकत छन ई,
जू मिथै जीणू सिखांदिन,
हालातों दगड़ी लड़नू सिखांदिन।
सै गल्त कू फर्क सिखांदिन,
अर खैरी खाण सिखांदिन।
जब कभी टूटी जांदू शरीर, दिक्क ह्वै जांद
आख्यों अग्नै अन्ध्यारू छ्या जान्द
मेरी ब्वै का आँसू म्यरा आँख्यू का अग्नै,
खड़ा ह्वै जान्दिन वाढु सी, पहाड़ बणीकी
रोक दिदान म्यरा आँसू
नि ध्वलण दिंदा भैर।।

  Beni Madhav Dhyani creates Garhwali poetry in conventional methods and style. He does not use experimentation.
   Beni Madhav Dhyani was born in 19945, village Jugarsain, Sheela Patti of Pauri Garhwal.
    Beni Madhav Published a Garhwali Poetry collection 'Geet Gumnat'. Madan Duklan and Girish Sundariyal appreciated rhymes of Geet Gumnat'.

कविता मेरी सरा टका, पर टक लगावा सुणणा  मा
काम काज थैं बिसरि जावा , टक्क लगवा बिंगणा मा।
बड़ा फर्क च ये टका को , सुणणा अर समझणा मा
कन कनू की मौ चली गे , ये टका तै खूणा मा।
देवी दिवता मनदा छन विकट शक्ति ये टक्का की
तब्बि   भक्तगण पूजा करदीें भेंट चडाँदीं टक्का की।
सुण ल्या दगड्यों टका छीं मीमा सब्जी मंडी मीन जाण
फूल फल व रस कस भुज्जी सभी खरीदीs मीन लाण।
टक्का जु कीसा खाली च , टक बथेंदी खाणा की
टक्का  बिना रोज मिताई टक बजार घुमणा की। 
चीज खरीदी कुछ नी सकणो , टक प्वड़ी च  दिखणा की
तनखा मिलदा टक्का रंदीना तल्या  मल्या कीसा मा।
मैना आखरी टपरान्दू रैंदु , टका नि मिल्दा कीसा मा
टका छैंद मि टकटकु रैंदु , बिना टका कु चिंता मा।
टका बगैर खर्च नि चल्दु , पगाळ गडणैं   सुद बुद मा
बड़ी शक्ति च ये टका मा , चै छ्वटु च दिखणा मा
मनखी तैं कुमनखी बणान्दा ये टका ही दुनिया मा
