रघ्घु दा चौका तिर्वळि ऐ कि गौळु चिरफाड़ी म्यौळंणि घन्नू छौ। गंवड़्या भरि दलगरेंणा(परेसान हूणा) छा वे कS रूंण स्ये। क्वी ब्वन्नु-- "हे वेन रूंण नी त हैंसण च ! वे कु बुबा मुर्यूं च।"
"हे भै, तुम ब्वन्ना त सै बात छंवा पंण सौंण मोरि सासू अर भादौ ऐनि आंसु। मुंड मुंड्ये ग्येनी, तेल खये ग्या, पितरकुड़ु थरप्ये ग्या अर मैना मनSये ग्या त अब म्यौळंणि घन क्यापंणि नि लगंणू च तुम थैं। फूका, वे थैं थामर (सहारा) दींणू वे कS मुक फर एक दां फेर चला।"
सर्रा गौं कS जजड़ाट कै वे कs ड्यारम् ऐ ग्येनि। मंगंणा ब्वाडन् वे कि पीट मलासी बोलि-- "ब्यट्टा! टीग (कमर) मसकांण। कै कs बुबा नि रैनि यीं मुंथम्। सौब आंदा छन अर जांदा छन।"
"ब्वाडा जी, मि जंण्दु छौं।" रघ्घुन् अपड़ु नाक, आंखा अर गिच्चु फूंजी बोलि-- "मै थैं एक मैना ह्वे ग्या, मिन अंमणि फेस बुक खोलि त म्यारा बुबा जी का मुन मा ३०० लुक्खुन् लाइक मारी।" रघ्घु फेर रूंण बैठि ग्या। वेन धौसिनकै बोलि --"जौं लुक्खुन म्यारा बाबै मिरत्यु थैं लाइक कैरि वु म्यारा बैरि छन। खुस ह्वे ग्येनि कि मोरि गि खिम्मा खंणत्वाळ।"
"च्वाबै! त्यारा बुबै मुनै खबर-सार फेसबुक फर कैन सरा ?"
"म्यारा ममा फड़क्वाळ जीन।"
"हेप्डी ब्वे का ! फेसबुका दगड़्यौन् फड़क्वाळ जी कु नौ अर फोटु द्येखि अर फकाफक लाइक मारि द्येनि। फड़क्वाळ जी त भरि फेमस छन फेसबुक मा।" गग्गुन् फेसबुकै सकळि(सच्चै) बिंगा।
"थ्व! कमेंट बि त पौड़ा ज्यां कS सदमा मा रघ्घु भै जिकुड़ु फुंण्णु च।"
रघ्घुन् बोलि-- "कमेंट त् मिन अज्यूं तकै पौढ़ी नि छन।" रघ्घुन कमेंट ओपन कैरि त वु हौर भक्वरा-भकोर कै रूंण बैठि ग्या। फड़क्वाळ जी कु रघ्वा बुबा मुन मा पैलि वूं कि फोटु डळीं अर तौळ बटि ल्यख्यूं छौ-- "म्यारा जीजा जी, सोरग ह्वे ग्येनि।" कमेंट अंया--
"खंणत्वाळ जी! मज्जा मा हैं ?"
"खंणत्वाळ जी, आप जियो हजारों साल।"
"वाह फड़क्वाळ जी! क्या अच्छी खबर दी।"
"गजब फड़क्वाळ जी, दिल खुश कर दिया।"
"आप बहुत अच्छी गडवाली लिखते हैं। लगे रहो फड़क्वाळ जी।"
"सुन्दर कविता फड़क्वाळ जी।"
"गजब फड़क्वाळ जी।"
"छा गये फड़क्वाळ जी।"
"खंणत्वाळ जी अर फड़क्वाळ जी आप हमारा मार्ग-दर्शक छंवा।"

                 'Bargat' is a short story written by Mahesha Nand and is one of stories from story collection 'Augar' (2013).
     The story deals with issues of cleanliness, health and exploitation by local remedies doctors (Jhad Tad) 
           The story teller Mahesha Nand illustrates the story with a flow that reader does not leave the story till end gets due surprise from the story narrator.
From the first few lines, Bargat is captivating story.
  Mahesha Nand uses story telling style as he is telling a folk story but with modern subject.
The plot, setting, characterization in the story is praiseworthy
  In many stanzas, the story flow is as poetic flow. There are raptures in a short story and that is the specialty of Mahesha.
  The dialogues are from real Garhwal villages. As is the characteristics of Mahesha Nand the language is Thet Garhwali or could be said unadulterated one from modern education.
         Mahesha Nand is teacher by profession and this author found that he does not mind telling the motivational motto at the end.

  Many officials recorded land measurement without real measuring the land in Batten settlement. By assumption, the records were made.
Dr Dabral referring F. Curry writes that there was no Paimayas (measurement) of the land and through assumption the records were made (Najar Andaji records)
.  Baker came in place of Batten for land settlement. He had to depend on Traill and Batten records. (Dabral)
      Definitely, there were lapses in Batten settlement. However, now, there were some demarcation for Hissedar, Khaykar and Sirtan. By Batten settlement the owners became awar about their rights on land. The rights and duties for Padhan and Thokdar were more transparent than past.
     Batten was impressed by the honesty and hard work of Munsif (kanungo) Shiva Nand Khanduri at Shrinagar (Dabral, page 183) Batten reported to Kumaon Commissioner Govan that salary for Shivanand Khanduri should be monthly salary for Rs.150. Shivanand was satisfied for Rs. 50 salary.  Batten recommended for Rs 100 for Khanduri. Batten recommended a permanent position for Khanduri as Munsif or Kanungo (Pre Mutiny Records Kumaon Settlement letters issued vol.1, 1837-39). Shivanand was faithful to British officers as his forefathers were faithful to Garhwal Kings and after Gurkha rulers.
           Pau wrote that that job became important that job which Batten completed personally. Before Batten, no British officer visited rural Garhwal so extensively. Batten systemized the complex records. He recorded tax for each individual of each village. Batten recorded the details of Hissedar, Khaykar and Sirtan of each village whatever he got report. Batten started report and recording of Village chiefs, Thokdar getting Dastur from villagers. Though, there were mistakes in measurement but the work of Batten became the reverences and guidelines  for future officers of land settlement.

Pareshwar Gaur: The Poet of varied subject and tones

    Pareshwar Gaur is famous for producing first Uttarakhandi language film 'Jagwal'. Most of Uttarakhandi recognize Pareshwar for his historical film only.
However, Pareshwar also created more than 150 Satirical prose and more than 100 Garhwali poems.
Pareshwar was born in 1947 in village Mirchwar, Aswalsyun, Pauri Garhwal. Pareshwar published his Garhwali-Hindi poetry collection 'Ukal Undhar' in 2006 from Canada. Ukal-Unhdar is historical poetry collection being first Garhwali Poetry Collection published from a foreign country.
  The Garhwali poems of Gaur are of varied subjects, colors and tone. Gaur uses free style prose-poetry for his poetry.  Most of his poems are satirical and have anger on administration.
Pareshwar Gaur uses simple phrases for his poems.

म्यरा मरणा बाद , म्यरो मुल्क आजाद
ह्वालो भि त , कै ल्याखौ
रौं जब तक , देखे मिल सदांन
गरीबी भुकमरी असह्य अर डॉ
ईच हमरि जिंदगी , ई ह्वेइ हमरि मौ !
मी जना कथगै हवाला , मी जना ल्वाळा
जौन अपड़ी ब्वे तैं नि दे कबि सुख
तब तैका मन मा उठी होला बिकार
लगी होली गौंछी , सै होली चोट।
सद्दुवाओं का बदला निकळि होली बदुवा
बाणी -कुवाणी
उपाड यी लटला दे होली बळहंत्या
कै -कैल त खै होली घात
......

नि नचाणि तुमन रौळ बौळ
नि   नचाणी पट्टी गवाणी दिसा ध्याणी
लानत च तवैकु नि नचाणा जु तिल
म्यरा मुल्का का रैबासि लोक।
जब तू खुदेन्दी , उनि खुद्यो ,उनि हुंकार फुंकार
परचो मिन्न पर , मी क्या ?
पुजलो त्वै सर्या गढ़वाळ
तब होली थापना नै गढ़ की।

        Danyasti short story by Mahesha Nand is not a new story in Garhwali story world. Past story creators published many stories in Modern Garhwali literature about children ignoring parents in villages or sending back their parents to villages or orphan houses.
The subject is not new, the plot is also not exclusive and the social conditions are also not new in Danyasti story by Mahesha.
         The present story is important from the point of view of presentation and new phrases used by Mahesha Nand. His phrases in the present story make the story important for Garhwali fiction world.
     Mahesha uses analogies for speeding the story.     
उपरी पंछी तरां टपराणु छौ .
फूलीं मुंडली घांडी सि  लाळ जन डगड्याणि छै  .
धौम्पा कुंलैं कि सि डाली घळकि
   Mahesha Nand is master in using pair words usually used in oral communication in Garhwal and Mahesha uses them as his domesticated slaves. Kathait appreciated his uses of pair words too.
चैल-पैलम , रक्च्वड़ा-रकचोड, अबलाट-छबल़ाट
Mahesha uses words those are not used by educated Garhwali even in Garhwal. Garhwalis should thank Mahesha for making them in uses as
कळयूर, कमताण, रैसान, गासी  .
Readers would enjoy the sad story as Mahesha is successful in creating pathos.

   Bird was the chief of land settlement for Agra province. Batten was reporting to Bird. Batten  followed  instructions from Bird too. Therefore, historians don't blame solely to Batten for the flaws in Garhwal land Settlement.  (Dabral, page 184)
        Before starting land settlement, Bird studied agriculture status, income sources and possibilities, flaws in determining the tax, improvement opportunities for agriculture of the regions (Bhanu D, page 172).
       There were two types of farmers (Reports on Revenue Commission , Bengal, vol.1, page, 11) -
Khudkast – the owners in their agriculture activities
Paykast- Those perform agriculture activities for other land owners
   The main income of East India was land tax and the improvement was possible only when there is improvement in agriculture. There was need for offering security to famers that nobody would snatch their ownership on the land. Therefore, in 1819, British government instructed that there would be security for ownership of Khudkast and Paykast famers (Reports on Revenue Commission, Bengal, vol.1, page22) . Therefore, the records were made wherein the records of farm owners, stokeholds and their 'rights' were registered. Those records were called 'Chapter of Rights'. 'Chapter of Rights' was also important for government dealing with the people smoothly (Bhanu, page 193). Bird suggested that it was better less income but the revenue collection should be regular and not irregular (Bhanu, page 172-173).
       There were apprehensions for lesser revenue collection from Garhwal. However, after completion of land settlement in Garhwal, the shortage was only for Rs. 572 from Garhwal (Dabral, pp-184). There was no delay in tax collection from Garhwal.
                Bird stressed on irrigation facilities for agriculture (Bhanu) . However, there was no mention of irrigation facilities in Garhwal in any report (Dabral).
 
      Bird reported his government that in the past periodical land settlements (3 or 5 years), the land lords bided for higher tax payment but in most cases, they did not pay tax as per bidding. Bird suggested that 20 % village land should be kept free for foddering for cattle. Bird suggested that government should not levy tax on such land in plains (Bhanu, pp178). In Garhwal, such land was abundant in each village. Therefore, in Garhwal case, Batten encouraged people for converting 'parti' land into farm land. Batten included barren land as the land of village. Bird instructed keeping records in Hindi.  Barring first two Trail's settlements, the main statements in other settlements, the language was Hindi and only 'Tafsil' was in Urdu.

घोंसलों मा सांप ऐगे  , पोथळा च्यूंचाण लैगे
कळेजो धीरज ख्वैगे , इनि मोह   हूंदु
मनखी मनख्याळी अपणी केकु   जग से खोंदु।

म्वारु घुंघ्याट कनो , गंगा स्युंस्याट जनो
संदेश ल्हौन्दु जनो मन को मेल धोंदु
मनखी मनख्याळी अपणी केकु  जग से खोंदु।

केळा को फिरक एक , शेर का बच्चा एक
मनखी का बोल एक , धर्म एक होंदु
मनखी मनख्याळी अपणी केकु  जग से खोंदु।
मिर्चो को चिरपिराट , हुक्का को गुड़गुड़ाट
मूर्खों को ककड़ाट एक समान होंदु   
मनखी मनख्याळी अपणी केकु   जग से खोंदु।

कोल्हू तिलों को तेल , दूध पाणी को मेल
मनखी तू देख खेल एक भावु जांद
मनखी मनख्याळी अपणी केकु   जग से खोंदु।
