Ganga ka Mait Biti: A Garhwali Poetry collection by Ghanshyam Raturi 'Shailani'

  Ghanshyam Raturi is the first Garhwali Poet whose Garhwali Poem 'Chipko Song' was read in international level on 5th June 1988 in International Environment Day Bangkok with English translation. Ghanshyam Shailani read his lyric and environmentalists appreciated the poem.

        The inhabitants of Garhwal have been conscious about saving environment by birth. There have been tendencies in Garhwal for creating proverbs, folk stories, phrases, folk songs, folk dramas for centuries.
             Chipko Andolan or Hugging Trees Movement caught attention in Garhwal and Kumaon due to culture of protecting environment by people of Garhwal and Kumaon.
        Ghanshyam Raturi 'Shailani' was one the front runners of Chipko Andolan with Gaura Devi, Chandi Prasad Bhatt, Sunder Lal Bahuguna and others. Chipko word was taken from the lyric of Ghanshyam Raturi 'Shailani'.
              The 'Ganga ka Mait Biti' a Garhwali poetry collection by Ghanshyam Raturi is totally devoted to Environment and Humanity. Humanity and Environment protection are same and walk together.
Chipko Andolan impacted deeply Garhwali poetry world and today, every Garhwali poet does not forget to create poem of Environment Protection. Ghanshyam Raturi was one of the poets who was taking parts in Chipko Andolan and was also creating Poems for accelerating the Chipko movement too. 
              There are forty four poems related mainly to Environment, forest, rivers, soil, trees, people and humanity. Ghanshyam also included his poems in this volume those he created for social awareness movement as family planning, alcohol prohibition, emergency, political pollution, greed for power, non inclusive development in rural and urban regions inhuman behavior of present society etc. There are poems about women empowerment too.
          Through his simple phrased poems, Ghanshyam is able to make understand readers about disasters due to sudden flood in rivers of Himalaya.
           The poems are easy to sing and were created for women who did not go to school for formal education. Therefore, all poems of Raturi are easily graspable. The reader would like to sing –
                   गीतकार घनश्याम रतूड़ी 'शैलानी ' के गीत
----------आवा धरती सजावा --

ओ हो नई डाळी नया बण लगावा,
धरती सजावा।
ओ हो  धरती को संकट मिटावा,
मिली जुलीक आवा

----पेड़ की पुकार ----

खड़ु होयुं छौ जुग बिटीन,
तुम्हारा खातिर मै ज्यूण चांदौं. 
मै तैं न काटा मै छौं तुम्हारो
तुम तैं अग्वाड़ी कुछ देण चांदौं।।
            There is Hindi translation of each poem and there are three translations in English too those were sung in Environment day in Bangkok in 1988.
   The International Environmentalists will always remember the contribution of Ghanshyam Raturi 'Shailani' as they appreciate poets as A. R Ammons, Robert Bly, Dickinson, Whiteman, Steven, William C. William, Brenda Hillman, Juan Carlos-Galliano, Forest Gander, Cyrus Cassells , Loma Dee Cervantes, Plamela Uschek etc for their marvelous poetries about Environment Protection.

Ghanshyam Raturi: A Chipko Poet 
Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry –-69

      Modern Garhwali poems have various types of subject and poetic forms. There are poets who created poems about social reforms and awakening subjects.  Sada Nand Kukreti, Gairola, Chandra Mohan Raturi Kanauji were  of initiating era of modern Garhwali poetry. Ghanshyam Raturi followed these poets and Bhajan Singh Singh that poems should be of reforming subject.
Ghanshyam Raturi belongs to Charigar Village; Kesar Patti of Tihri Garhwal, Uttarakhand.
Raturi expired in 1999
.
Raturi had been involved in improving the conditions of villages of Garhwal. He is social activist and initiated the Banning Alcohol Consumption, protection of Forests, Improving women conditions of rural areas
     He was  very good singer too and attracted  audience by his melodious songs. His most of the poems are related to awakening subject and reformation subjects.
He published his poetry collection by name of 'Chola Badal' and he used to publish his poems in various local papers.  International critics appreciate his poetry collection   " Ganga Jamuna k Maiti Bate"
His verses are of lyrical and conventional types as he used his poetry for awakening the community and he always used verses for making  his points clear to people.
  World literature will remember Ghanshyam Raturi for his awakening poems and using his poems for taking community development to the common people.

        Patrick Murphy et all in 'Literature of Nature' (page 320) sate "The first documentation of the use of Chipko in the 1970s is marked in famous poem by "Chipko Poet" Ghanshyam Raturi   which calls as -
Embrace our trees
Save them from being felled
Te property of our hills
Save it from being looted 
Chipko poetries helped the movement spread all over the hills.  "
Vandana Shiva nad Jain etc. also attributed the Chipko poetries by Raturi for Chipko movement being popular in Garhwal.

Raghuvir Singh Rawat 'Ayal': A poet of realism and satire

        Raghuvir Singh Rawat 'Ayal' was born in Ayal village, Padalsyun of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Rawat expired in 2011.
Critics appreaciated his poetry collections 'Guthyar' and 'He Guthyar'
      Raghivir Singh Rawat   'Ayal' is more famous for his adding 'Guthyar' word (chauk, Courtyard) in the last line of his Garhwali poetry.  Though Ayal is versatile poet, but was famous for his sharp satire and attacking on our social, political or cultural behavior. The poem attacks on policies makers and then taking advantages of those policies through encroaching other's rights. The use of figures of speech by phrases makes the poem timeless.
   Rawat uses common phrases for making poetries enjoyable, easy for understanding and comforts for readers. He adopted newer style as dandriyal et all adopted.
The following poem is an example of his attacking on social behavior and his power of vocabulary

झिलमिल झिलमिल झिलमिल छाया चौ डांड्यूं तरफ

धरति का ओर छोर कन सजीला -छबीला
रंग -रंगीला काया द्याखो , फ्यूंळि  का फूल पीला
बाँसुरी का स्वर सरगम मा  गीत बणि जौंला। 

घस्यर्यूं के मन मा टीस।  उदास उदास
तिसळि आंख्यूं मा झणि कैकि होली आस
ऊंठड़ियूं कि तीस बुझौला , आस बणि जौंला।

छळछळ - छळछळ  मन प्राणु की छळकदी सि धार
कैई जल्मूं की प्रीत मेरी , कइ  जल्मूं को प्यार
अगास क बीच  कखी , दूर लुकि जौंला।

Balwant Singh Rawat is one of the prominent figures of Garhwali literature in poetry and dramas.
Balwant Rawat has been publishing his poetries, lyrics and Ghazals in magazines and periodicals. Nazibabad radio station relayed his poems regularly.
   Rawat is famous for illustrating Garhwal life.
Balwant published a Garhwali poetry collection Garh-Gitika.

     Balwant Singh Rawat is a famous name among Uttarakhandis in Chandigarh as social worker, as stage planner and implementer. He was also involved with D D Sundariyal for promoting Garhwali dramas in Chandigarh and arranged staging more than twenty Garhwali dramas in Chandigarh besides arranging Garhwali cultural programs. He was devoted Garhwali dramatist as lyric writer, director and performer too.
  Born in Jamari ( Khatali, Pauri Garhwal) in 1935,  Balwant Singh is also well known figure for creating   Garhwali language poetries and he was awarded twice by Punjab Government for his creation of poetries.
     His collection of Garhwali language poetries "Garh Gitika" was acclaimed by critics and readers with same respect.
  There are nineteen poems in Garh Gitika by Balwant Singh .
Every reader will like this stanza, wherein Rawat says that since, he is not Badshah Shahjahan who could built Tajmahal, he will offer an unique  present to his mother land that is  Garh Gitika a collection of Garhwali verses.
Chuni rain phool kab bati preeti ka
Rang nyara chhai preeti ki riti ka,
Savannah hundo !me bi banado mahal--
Kavi chhaun 'bhent' kardu ya  "Garh Gitika"
Stuti: is the poem of praying Sarswati and Laxmi as for any huma being knowledge and resources are equally important
Jagran: As the name suggests Jagran is about awakening long poem for the Garhwali society
Dunya dyakha, afu tain pachhyana
Tumaro nam karnu chhaun uchyana
Khud:  khud is a memoir of Garhwal by a migrated Garhwali who left his village in childhood in search of job for making his family prosperous. Balwant tries to make it pathos. "Khub huin che " is also of same pattern of poem
Jeewan Ek Paheli , mi Bhagwan ni chhaun  is philosophical poem and somehow preaching poem too
Ansu peen chandu is a poem of  pathos rapture and a life sketch of poet making pattern
Kilai runi rai tu poem is a love poem and "Mi Unthain pyar kardu",  Bhatuli, "Mi Thain Bhulaik Rwala" , "Unku Viyog", "Ansu', 'Tab samjhali ' are  sad love poems
' darama hunu cha" is a poem based on badi- badan style lyric and well written by Rawat
Ja Garhwal  is an inspiring poem for reverse migration
Garh ek parichay is description of geography and society of village of poet jamali (khatali), while hamro Desh is praise of Garhwal area
  Rawat does not believe in experimentation and his style of poems are based on conventional poetry, chaunfala, badi badan styles .
  Rawat stresses on more on emotions, spontaneity, preaching, idealism, naturalism, existentialism and does not touch at all to new form, expressionism, surrealism, romanticism, neo classicism.
Rawat used the symbol, images, proverb , figures of speeches all from Garhwal.
  The language of all poems is simple and understandable by normal Garhwali .Most of the poems are in lyric form and enjoyable
  Conclusively, the poems of Balwant Singh Rawat are the poems written by a migrated Garhwali in memoir of his motherland, which is far away from him
