A Fur Ghinduri: A Long Dramatic Poem for Common Man's Enjoyment

Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry – 48 A
-(Review of poetry collection Fur Ghindudi of Girdhari Prasad Thapliyal "Kankal" )
-
                    Literature Historian:  Bhishma Kukreti

English Literature critic Professor Radha Ballabh Dobhal describes two basic characteristics of Garhwali poems of Girdhari Prasad Thapliyal 'Kankal' and editor of famous monthly Hilans late Arjun Singh Gusain supported Dobhal that the poems of 'Kankal' are intellectual ones but are enjoyed by common men equally. Secondly, the uniqueness of poems is that verses of Thapliyal are more enjoyable, vibrant, and provocative when the readers read them loudly as the poems-"
She walks in beauty by Byron "The Song of the Western Men", by Robert S Hawker , "The Frog", by  " Jean Dao,  " One Art", by Elizabeth Bishop ,,"A Small Elegy", by Jiri Orten ,  The Tyger ", by William Blake ,"Meeting at Night", by Robert Browning ," ,,"November in England", by Thomas Hood ,"Dream Variations", by L Hughes,"  " The jackdaw of Rheims , by Thomas Ingoldsby ,"Sea Surface Full of Clouds", by Wallace Stevens ,"Silver", by Walter de la Mare ,"How to Tell a Story", by Robert Warren ,"On Westminster Bridge", by William Wordsworth , "To put one brick upon another", by Philip Larkin ,"Paul Revere's Ride", by Henry Wordsworth Longfellow ,"Adventures of Isabel", by Ogden Nash ,"Nothing but Death", by Pabolo Neruda and " Ozymandias " by Percy Bysshe Shelley are more enjoyable and tell their unique points when read loudly.
The long poem published in book form in 1959 but the poem had already gained popularity among all Garhwalis of Garhwal as well other places of India.. Famous Garhwali and Hindi dramatist , journalist, Lalit Mohan Thapliyal states that the reason behind the popularity of Fur Ghindudi is that the poem has story, dramatic style and lyrical form with modernity in the subject.. The story style is conventional Tota Maina 's love story but describing the habits and habitats, pains, sufferings, reasons of poverty, shallow prides, desires, enjoyment medium, confusing psychology of Garhwalis for and against migration, realism of rural Garhwal of fifties .
Literature historians, Garhwali readers will remember "Kankal" and his long poem Fur Ghindudi for his cleverly using of right words, figure of speeches, proverbs, correct way of indicating emotions, using raptures in natural form, using poetic excellences correctly that readers wish to read his pomes loudly without any hesitation.
The poem is narrated in conventional Tota-Maina form that is poems in dialogues between parrot love pair. This is unique style of Thapliyal of creating poetry in conventional form or style but expressing the reality of rural Garhwal. Girdhari Prasad Thapliyal 'Kankal' had been successful in creating various true images og Garhwal of forties and fifties. The symbols and images of the long poem are effective in creating impressions of realism in the mind of reader.
Puran Pant 'Pathik' the editor of weekly ''Garhwali Dhai' states that the poems of 'Kankal' inspired the new generation Garhwalis for creating verses in Garhwali language than in Hindi.
No doubt, the long poem Fur Ghindudi is created in fifties but the content is still relevant and its lyrical form, dramatic narrating style is capable of attracting new generation readers.

Kankal' used various subjects and styles in Garhwali poetry as following poetry is definitely based on 'Chhayavad (Neo-romanticism) –
तुम द्यबता मी दासी
तुम रोज रोज सौदा होंदा
मी होंदी जांदी बासी
तुम लाली मि घांडी
In this poem, Kankal showed the soul inferior than the Lord.

In Garhwali Kingdom and Nepalese rule, both the administrations offered lands for a few important temples. Nepalese government increased land for temples. The said land was called 'Gunth'. The income from 'Gunth' land was used for salaries for priests, and workers of the temple.  From 'Sadabrat', the food and other articles were distributed among the pilgrims of visiting Badrinath –Kedarnath.
In 1815, there was total land of 501 villages in 'Gunth'. British administration measured the land offered for Gunth in 1823 and detail is as follows (Atkinson) –

Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi: A Successful Garhwali Translator of Sanskrit Poetries

Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry –-303
                    Literature Historian:  Bhishma Kukreti
-
There are basic problems of translating poems of one language to other language as:
1-lack of similar sounds in two languages
2-Diction is different than one language's poems
3-There may be aesthetic differences
4-There may be linguistic differences
In Garhwali, there has been tradition of Garhwali literature poets translating poems of classic Sanskrit poems into Garhwali.  One of such Garhwali literature creative is Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi who translated Sanskrit classic poetry collection 'Sudama Charit' by Narotam Das into Garhwali language with ease.
Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi was born in Syunrai Khet village of Lansdowne block, Pauri Garhwal on 6th July 1923. Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi started literary activities from the student life when he was taking schooling from Mission School Dehradun 1944-1945. He along with Damodar Prasad Thapliyal, Dr Purushottam Dobhal, Ram Chandra Uniyal, started a Garhwali magazine 'Fyunli'. Due to financial problems, they had to stop publication of 'Fyunli'.
After completing his studies, Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi joined Police service in 1944 and retired from their in 1981.
In Hindi, he published poetry collections and story collection.
Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi published a translation of Sanskrit classic poetries created by Narotam Das – 'Sudama Charit'.  'Sudama Charit' is about the eternal friendship between two friends –lord Krishna and poor Sudama.
The translation of 'Sudama Charit' (same name in Garhwali) shows that Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi was brilliant translator. Garhwali 'Sudama Charit' proves that Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi was great knowledgeable of Sanskrit and Garhwali languages and had depth knowledge of poetic construction system. Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi was well versed with the emotions hidden in the Sanskrit poetries.
The readers will find the capability of Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi in creating attractive Doha as
सुण बामणी बेकार छन, दुन्या का सबि भोग
सच्चु भजन भगवान् कू , मिटे दींद सबि रोग
Another example of brilliancy of Pundit Ishwari Datt Dwivedi is seen here in the following Dhanakshari and Savaiya;

When Pundit Ishwari Datt was ailing and struggling for his life, he handed over another Garhwali literature book to the publisher for publication. However, Pundit Ishwari Datt expired on 13th December 2008 and the book ' Banji Koodi ku Jagwalu?'  is still is waiting for publishing.
Garhwali literature will always remember Pundit Ishwari Datt as great translator for literature cross fertilization.

In Garhwali and Gurkha regimes, the income including foods from seven villages as Khola near Shrinagar was kept for the pilgrims visiting to Badrinath, Badrinath temples. In 1816, Trail calculated the revenue for those villages for Rs.237/- (3).  In 1797, after Gurkha capturing Kumaon, Gurkha King Ranbahadur Shah dedicated 'Katolo' Pargana of Kumaon for 'Sadabrat' Pargana for food for pilgrims visiting to Badrinath. The food ingredients of that Pargana was brought to the Chantara at Dharmshala built by Rudrashah at Pipalkoti for distributing foods for pilgrims. The revenue for that Pargana was calculated for Rs 1173(4).
In 1797, the Nepal King Ranbahadur Shah on behalf of his queen Kantimati dedicated Mahruri Pargana revenue for 'Sadabrat' for pilgrims of Kedarnath temples.  The food articles of Mahruri Pargana were distributed at Chauntara built by Bamshah at Balpatan Chatti. In 1816, the revenue of Mahruri Pargana was calculated for Rs 1006/-.
In 1813, Nepal King Rajendravikramshah dedicated the revenue of Dashaula Pargana of Garhwal as 'Sadabrat' Pargana for pilgrims of Badrinath temple pilgrims. In 1816, the revenue for Dashaula was calculated for Rs1315/-.
In 1813, Nepal King Rajendravikramshah dedicated the revenue of Painkhanda , Bamsu and  Maikhanda Pargana for the pilgrims of  Tungnath.  The food articles were distributed at Ahilyabai dharmshala at Chaupat Chatti and at Patogarh Chatti. In 1816, the revenue of those Pargana was calculated for Rs. 1126. The total revenue for those 'Sadabrat Parganas was for Rs.4620 in 1816.
Nepal government instructed to tax payers from 'Sadavrat' villages for paying revenues to 'Sadavrat' managing employees. The 'Sadavrat' management used to offer foods to pilgrims at five places. There were rules for 'Sadavrat' income. After the expanses at the end of pilgrim season, the balance amount was kept as exigency amount for the season when number of pilgrims is expected more.
Rawals of Badrinath and Kedarnath were managing Sadavrat for those temples in 1816. The income source were as follows-
1-Income from 'Sadavrat' fund
2- Offerings by pilgrims to temples
3- Income and food received from 'Gunth' villages
4- The income generated from the belongings of dying pilgrims nearby temples -as the belongings of such pilgrims was kept by the temple authorities
Trail did not interfere in first three income sources but stopped the 4th one.  He kept separate accounts for Gunth income and Sadavrat income. It was found that the 'Sadavrat' income was much more than the actual expenses at Pipalkoti and Joshimath on pilgrim food distribution. Trail suggested that the extra income from 'Sadavrat' should be used for temple building maintenance and roads building of those temples. Due to bad roads, pilgrim used to die on the path. However, government rejected the suggestion of Trail reasoning that government should not interfere in religious works. Government instructed that the temple and Sadavrat managing personnel should not use the income on their personal uses.(3)

Gokula Nand Kimothi : the bridge between older and newer Garhwali poetries

Critical and Chronological History of Modern Garhwali (Asian) Poetry –-50
                    Literature Historian:  Bhishma Kukreti

After independence, there have been two types of Garhwali poets. The first type of poets did not leave the legacy of old precedent established by poets around 1850 AD. Late Aditya Ram Doodhphudi was one such poet who even in nineties followed the set pattern of Garhwali poetry in terms of physical format, style, conversation path with readers or audience, subject, writing verses more for moral teaching or we may say that the versifiers of this class were purely idealistic in form and subjects in Garhwali literature. Another class of Garhwali poets emerged after independent, which initiated to doing experiments in many dimension and direction of poetries . These experiment lovers broke all the borders of past pattern of Garhwali poems in terms of form, style, structure, composing scale , symbol, attitude, experiencing symbols of a common man, direct communication representation with the audience, and subject. The know critic of Garhwali poetry Bhagwati Prasad Nautiyal intimates that Abodh Bandhu Augean , Sarvesh Juyal, Kanhaya Lal Dandariyal, Jaya Nand Khuksal 'BauLya', LalamJi' Giridhari Lal Thapaliyal 'kankal', Sher Singh 'Garhdeshi' and Jagdish Bahuguna 'kiran' will be remembered in Garhwali poetry world for initiating new terms, new formats, variation in subject and characterization, subject of realism and new communication conduit of poetry. Most of the poets of eighties , nineties and this millennium have not only followed the path, which Nautiyal described above but newer generation of poets are more aggressive and do more experiments in all terms of poetry.

Born in 1920 in Kimotha, Pokhari, Chamoli Garhwal, Gokala Nand Kimotha is the bridge between the two classes of Garhwali poets. Gokula Nand Kimotha meets both the ends. Being in army for twenty eight years, Gokula Nand Kimotha 's poetries are full of patriotism, idealistic in nature and are with moral building messages, which our poets of pre-independence stressed upon. However, at the same time Kimothi used new symbols, newer subjects emerged because of post-independence in Garhwal. From form , style and aim of teaching point of views, verses of Kimothi seems to be old Garhwali poems of pre-independence but subject, symbols, using fresh emblematic words for direct conversation or communicating with readers attach him to the new generation of Garhwali poets.

Gokula Nnand Kimothi published two books on collection of his Garhwali poetries 'Garhwali -Gatha' and Pitaroon Raibar'

As name suggests, Garhwali Gatha has poems of praise worthy characters of Garhwal and Garhwalis . The rhymes of Garhwali Gatha are in the form of folk Garhwali songs and subject.

There are seventeen poems in Pitarun ko Raibar and most of the verses are aimed towards idealistic way of life .

In Binti poem, Kimothi prays to Laxmi the goddess of wealth for enhancing the prosperity and modern facilities in Garhwal that no Garhwali inhabitant requires migration and faces the pain of insult before others :

PaNi, motor bijali di de
Panchun ki di de raj.
Bhair ni jan poD jo ham sani
dekhaN bada bada saab

Fazal poem describes the scene of morning happenings in a Garhwali village and while reading the poem, the reader experiences as if it is the time of morning in his/her village
If Boya ki Jikudi describes the sacrifice of a mother of Garhwali village, Sajj poem takes us showing the reality of breaking relationship , intolerance, fissures in the old customs, Garhwali leaving their own language due to migration from Garhwal and the struggles in the migrated land.

Though, Gokula Nand Kimothi spent twenty seven years in army out of Garhwal he could not adjust himself in so called foreign land (pradesh) and there he remembers Garhwal and Garhwal. The poems Pyaro Garhwal and Teri Yad Man tell us how a migrated Garhwali feels frustrated in migrated land and how he remembers his motherland on and on. pyaro garhwal is also the extension of Garhwali folk song myaro gadhwaL kano bhagyan, kyaLa kulain ka chhan jakh bagwan and teri yad man poetry is annexing poetry tu wheli beera ghasiyaryun ka bhesh man created by Jeet Singh Negi

BaskyaL is the narration of rainy season in Garhwal and the beauty of Garhwal in rainy season. Same way, myaro gaun, byakhun dain poems are also the description of geographical beauty of Garhwal.

The ni hondu naunoo, pitrun raibar, palisi dida, swaanai-khan and uthau bhula haLsingo poems come under idealistic poems and teaches the importance of morals and morality. These poems pay attention on values, humanity, Garhwalism, village-ism and disciplined life.
The poem San 62 ki pukar of Kimothi is a call for all Garhwalis to serve the country and the description of tension generated around Neeti-Mana the Indo-China border villages of India.

Though, Kimothi wrote or published more poems in Hindi than Garhwali poems but Gokula Nand Kimothi got recognition in literary field because of Garhwali verses. Gokula Nand Kimothi will be remembered in Garhwali poetry field for his immense love for beauty of Garhwal, expression of pain of migration, destruction of Garhwali customs due to migration, extending the subject of folk songs and poetic subject of Jeet Singh Negi, creating patriotic poems as of Ram Dhari Singh Dinkar the famous Hindi poet and pathos rapture in remembering Garhwal through his Garhwali poems.
