Sacchida Nand Kandpal (Kandai, Chamoli Garhwal, and now Rudra Prayag1930-2002) was a Garhwali, Sanskrit and Hindi languages and he wrote a Garhwali drama 'Meetu Raut' in 1970 but published in 1982 in Gadhsudha, Chandigarh. Sacchida Nand Kandpal wrote the historical drama Meetu Raut' on the life of Meetu Raut and his son Nandu Raut
Meetu Raut was a king of Nagpur region of upper Garhwal at the time of Kanturi regime. He was a philosophical and spiritual king. Yogini, Dakini and Anccheri (super souls) were at his command. When Kantyuri king attacked Nagpur area, along with the army of Raut; Yogini, Dakini and Anccheri also fought on behalf of Meetu Raut against Kaintyura king. Nandu raut died on the stair case of Tungnath temple.
The drama Meetu Raut' has mixture of real historical events and imagination of playwright Kandpal. Kandpal tries to take readers to the time of Meetu Raut. Kandpal depicts the physical and spiritual power of Metu Raut effectively. Sacchida Nand used dialects of (Old) Chamoli Garhwal in the drama. The characters, events and places of the drama are vivid.

Daya Ram failed in tenth class and went to Delhi. There, he got job of Daftary. He started posting money order. His family members stopped agriculture works and became dependent on money order. Dayaram returned to home and started modern agriculture as gardening, horticulture, mushroom production, honey business etc. Now, Daya ram is earning in village more than what he could dream. However, his wife is not satisfied because she is not getting that adventure what she used to get by money order.
The story teller is successful in depicting a money order being brought by post man, the adventure in village, and the talk of villagers about money order and handing over money by postman. Joshi also searches the accelerating factors of migration from rural Garhwal. Joshi is famous for humor in the story and then creating satire for his subject. His characters are simple and Joshi provides them a respectable place in the story. The readers get engaged due to tale telling technique of tale writer.

Mitra Nand Dabral (Sharma) :A Garhwali Poet of varied subjects and styles

                                 By---- Bhishma Kukreti

Garhwali literature has been facing many problems from the beginning when the Garhwalis started publishing various types of literature. The biggest problem for Garhwali literarians or literature creative is finding readers at a place and then distributing the literature to the readers because Garhwalis are scattered here and there in India and abroad. It is commonly said in humorous way among Garhwali literature creative that the Garhwali writer writes Garhwali literature aloof, publishes himself on his cost, reads himself and her or his successors destroy the literature by selling Garhwali literature to raddiwalas. From the beginning, Garhwali writers have been facing the problem of getting the addresses of real readers of Garhwali literature and dispatching them the published materials. This is the reason that even after publishing many books in Garhwali language, many Garhwali authors are unfamiliar or nameless in the jungle of Garhwali literature.

Internet is again bringing the problem for Garhwali literary creative. Those who don't have facilities for typing Garhwali literature in Devnagari script and then submitting it to the relevant blogs will be in darkness of unfamiliarity.

Mitra Nand Dabral Sharma is also such a Garhwali poet who is neither discussed in the literary field nor common Garhwalis know about the big contribution of Mitra Nand Dabral Sharma for Garhwali poems and proverbs.

Mitra Nand Dabral is an Ayurvaidic doctor in Jua area of Tihri Garhwal. His great grand father was the state doctor (Raj Vaidya) of Garhwali kingdom in Shri Nagar. Due to new alignment and other reasons, along with the king, Dabral family had to shift from Shri Nagar to Tihri and used to reside in Kafalpani – Dang area (Tihri Garhwal). Mitra Nand comes from the learned family of Dabral of Timali (Dabralsiyun, Pauri Garhwal), From Sanskrit point of view, Timali is famous for college of Sanskrit affiliated to Kashi Sanskrit Vidyapeeth in Timali, Dabralssyun . The inhabitants of Dabralsyun, Udayapur and Dhangu Patti used to say that the dogs, cats and domestic animals of Timali understand Sanskrit very well. Mitra Nand Dabral was born in Kafalpani (Tehri)

Mitra Nand Dabral wrote many verses in Garhwali languages and he used to try using pure Tiryali dialects in his poems. Though, his contribution in Garhwali poetry and prose require more researches. Till date we have the following details about the published work of Mitra Nand Dabral in Garhwali language:

• Fyunlee- A memorable a collections of various types, styles , forms and subjects of Garhwali poems

• Garhwali Kavita Samgrah: Being a doctor, Mittra Nand Sharma has to roam around Jua area and come in contact with various people. In his medical practice, Mitra Nand Dabral collected many proverb, maxim, axiom, adage or aphorisms of Garhwali vocabulary. He published those proverbs in this volume

• Gangadi Chakor: A superb example of mixing tragedy, satire and humour in creating poetry
• Bhaj Givindam ; A collection of Garhwali poems
• Satya Narayan Jee ki Nayi Vrat Katha: Dabral uses new subject in this poetry collection.

Mitra Nand is a famous social worker of his area and participates in various cultural and ritual programs with passion, enthusiasm and eagerness. He is very famous for his singing in 'Radheshyami tarj'

I and my village were lucky: a satire

My wife asked me to write about positive things around me and not to bark as television journalists and editors who are showing only negative happenings in India. As faithful husband (my friends say I am Bibi ka Gulam) I obeyed her.
Now I am writing that I am lucky. I and my basic school were lucky that education department posted tens of children books in English language. On that time my village was not lucky having English knowing villagers including our teachers. Our school was lucky for having such intelligent headmaster. As soon as English books reached to school, my headmaster observed that no villager including a he and another teacher could read these English books he decided to sell these books to a tea stall wala. In return, tea stall wala sent Pakodas twice a day for seven days to the houses of our two teachers. The family members of teachers were lucky having Pakodas on daily basis for seven days. I was lucky too. I stole two story books in English while taking from school to tea stall wala. For many years, those books were lucky to be my properties as I was unable to understand those stories in English language. Later on my younger brother was lucky to get tea and Pakoda by selling those books to tea stall wala.
Our hilly village was lucky that we had a kind hearted Gram sevak. Our hilly village was lucky that Gram Sevak fought for our hilly village and got sanction from village development department two iron Western Ploughs weighing more than half a ton each for our hilly village. It was bad luck of poor Sudama farmer who tried to plough hilly field by one of western ploughs. His one of old bulls died pulling the iron plough that was stuck deep in a rocky area of field. Our villagers are not ungrateful to any government. The same plough is still there stuck in the field of Sudama farmer and is witness that Lucknow government was taking interest about agricultural development in rural hills of Garhwal. Since, Gram pradhans are changing every five years and no Gram Pradhan was ready to keep heavy iron western plough at their courtyards therefore, another heavy western plough is kept on the road of village entry to show our thanksgiving attitude that Uttar Pradesh government was conscious for agriculture development of rural hills of Garhwal.
When Chaudhari Charan Singh Ji was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh our village was again lucky. Chaudhri ji was very much concern about animal husbandry development in hills of Garhwal. He dispatched male buffalos from Merut area to villages of Garhwal. People of Meerut were lucky that they got money be selling their unwanted male buffalos to Uttar Pradesh government. Villages of hills of Garhwal were lucky that they got free the giant male buffalo for breeding purpose that the coming buffalo generation would be Haryana buffalo generation.
The female buffalos were not lucky to have such giant male buffalo fellow as their companion. The female buffalos were scared of such big buffalo and they used to run away just seeing the big buffalo. Therefore, no body including village chief was ready to keep the buffalo in village. The Haryanvi buffalo was not lucky or competent enough to walk a centimeter on the hilly path of forest. Therefore, the gifted buffalo died after three four months. Our villagers are always grateful for others who help them. We call Bhains ko Pathar/Buffalo stone where the great buffalo died and that place is reminder that Uttar Pradesh government was conscious about developing agriculture, horticulture and animal husbandry in hills of Garhwal.  Uttar Pradesh government was lucky to have such villages those still regard the works of government.
There were other purposeful development works in my village and I shall be posting you about such great works by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments for our lucky village.

When migrated Garhwalis returned for settling in their ancestor village after spending their lives in government service, they also bring crookedness, arrogances, notoriousness and desires along with them. When discharged Jamadar, discharged Havldar or police constable and discharged clerk of court returned the village Garjiya the social equation the village change drastically. However, times came that military retired Jamadar understands the reality and one day he decides to take appropriate action. However, the question is whether other two would respond?
The story is having humor and satire. Joshi uses simple style in telling the tale. Joshi is successful in creating the new social equation in contemporary rural Garhwal.  Joshi uses contemporary Garhwali phrases in the story.

Om Prakash Semwal is multitalented literature creator of Garhwali language. Semwal is story writer, poet and playwright of Garhwali language.
In the age of when all national television and core regional channels, national and core regional periodicals are busy to show negative and as if everything going in doomed Om Prakash Semwal comes there to show hope for every Indian through his notable short dramas.
Om Prakash Semwal wrote a social family conflict base Garhwali drama 'Dagdi 'staged in August 1998 in a school of (Old) Chamoli Garhwal.
The drama is about conflicts, conspiracy among Mundeet (close to one family to other family by blood) embers. There was very cordial relation among the various family members of a Mundeet of Saunu and Gundaru. However, due to selfish intention of Naudi and Murkhalya, there is division among members of Mundeet.
However, when Naudi shows his real character Murkhalya was under threat. Murkhalya finds another way to get rid of Naudi.
The social family conflict base Garhwali drama 'Dagdi is a short drama and Om Prakash wrote the drama keeping teen age students and young students in mind. The drama shows effectively the self interest of minority members can harm the unity of families and society. The dialogues are having full influence of Rudraprayag region and nobody should mind as even the knowledgeable Garhwali literature creators will be happy to get newer words from Rudraprayag and Tungnath regions.
  The story flow is fast.
Concussively, the drama is useful for teen age and young students for understanding the loss by tension among families of a Mundeet.

Kukkut Dhwaj: A Garhwali Story about Breaking Orthodoxy Rules

(Review of a Garhwali Story Collection 'Ek Dhanga ki Atmkatha by Bhagwati Prasad Joshi 'Himwantvasi')

                                       By Bhishma Kukreti
[Notes on stories about breaking orthodox rules; Garhwali stories about breaking orthodox rules; Uttarakhandi stories about breaking orthodox rules; Mid Himalayan stories about breaking orthodoxy   rules; Himalayan stories about breaking orthodox rules; North Indian stories about breaking orthodox rules; Indian stories about breaking orthodox rules; Indian subcontinent stories about breaking orthodox rules; SAARC Countries stories about breaking orthodox rules;  South Asian stories about breaking orthodox rules; Asian stories about breaking orthodox rules]

When Kiritimani returns his village Kothi he is shocked by seeing the people are stuck up with same orthodoxy rules those were accepted norms for centuries as Brahmins not touching plough, not having bulls and not to do poultry farm acts.
People of twentieth century were living in the norms of eighteenth century. Nobody was ready to live in changed situation.
Kirtimani faces various unheard hurdles for his own people for changing the conventional wisdoms.
Story makes you witness for the struggle of Kirtimani. The readers feel irritation, want to laught, feel pity on people and there is small portion of rage due to irritation too. There is hopelessness and hope for future in the fiction 'Kukkut Dhwaj'. If not today, there is shock for the readers of fifties that a Brahmin family starts poultry farm. The story writer is expert in mixing imagination and reality in the story and making story interesting.
