Bhajun/Bhajedu Lok Geet:  Folk Songs Depicting Social Aspiration for Migrating to Cities

Folk Songs from Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-291

                     There was no arrangement for preserving folk songs in old time. Had been there arrangement for preserving folk songs created by non literate but sensitive to social changes and history folk song creators we must have the history of social changes took place in Garhwal and Kumaon.
          From British rule starting time, the male started migrating cities in Indian soil or in foreign soils and settling in cities.  The people who were left in villages started aspiring to settle in cities.
         The following two Garhwali folk songs –'kab alo hyund mangsir maina' and 'palayan utsaah' are related women aspiring to be with their husbands settled in city.

           The third folk song 'meko paad ni deen pitaji' depicts another social aspiration that the girl settled in city does not want getting married to a rural groom.
All these folk songs show the real picture of social changes took place in Garhwal and Kumaon.

When the autumn season would come I would go to Delhi where my husband lives.
I shall roam there in Karolbag and Red fort
I shall take meal at hotels
I shall take cauliflower-potato vegetable in the city (which is unavailable in village)

I dreamed that we shall live in bungalow and will take meal in hotels.

                         Love for Farm Animals from Old time
       The importances of farm animals have been there from the time of domestication of animals by human beings. There are many songs of the time when people used to worship animals in England. The Christians still sing folk song 'Glory to the lamb'. 
  The folk song 'The Derby Ram' of English Midland was sung in Churches around 1739. The folk song is still popular in the region. 
   There are Ravanlti various folk songs in Ravain region depicting love for farm animals and show importance for farm animals.

              ब्रिटिश राज बिटेन गढ़वळि- कुमाउँनी भाषा तैं अफु तैं बचाण अर विकास करणों बाण भौत मेनत करण पोड़। आज शिक्षा माँ परिवर्तन अर अंदादुंद भजण/भजेड़ु (पलायन)  से गढ़वळि- कुमाउँनी कु वजूद ही खतम हूणों अंदेशा ह्वे ग्ये।
इन मा यो जरूरी च बल गढ़वळि- कुमाउँनी भाषाओं तैं इन माध्यमों जरुरत पड़ी गे जू नयी साखी मा गढ़वळि- कुमाउँनी लगाव/प्रेम जगावो।


               यद्यपि इन्टरनेट अबि भारतम केवल आठ प्रतिशत लोगुन तक ही पौंच फिर भि इंटरनेट मो महत्व गढ़वळि- कुमाउँनी भाषाओं बाण बढ़ी गे किलैकि इन्टरनेट माध्यम से गढ़वळि- कुमाउँनी साहित्य बगैर खर्च कर्याँ बंचनेरूं (पाठक ) कुण उपलब्ध ह्वे जांद। फिर इंटरनेट धारक एक इलीट पाठक बि च तो समाज मा इंटरनेट धारक की कखि न कखि चलदी च तो ये पाठक पर घ्यारा (घेरा) डाळन आवश्यक बि च।

             The Pandukeshwar (near Badrinath, Chamoli Garhwal) )and Bageshwar Inscriptions by Lalitshur and Bhudev provide detail about Nimbar or Nimbart family Kingdom.

                              Nimbar and his successor Katyuri Kings


              The Lalitshur copper inscription describes that Nimbar conquered the kingdom by blessing from Shiva (Dhujjarti). That suggests that Nimbar might have battled and displaced either Tribhuvanraj Katyuri or his successor from the crown. 
    Lalitshur the grandson of Nimbar praised Nimbar as kind, donor, truthful, humble, pure or clean, energetic, serious, disciplined, and believer on customs.

           The name of wife of Nimbar Katyuri king was Nathudevi or Nashudevi.

                                       Arrival of Shankaracharya
 
It is believed that Shankaracharya expired in Kedarnath in 788. It might be possible that Shankaracharya might have arrived in the time of Nimbar or his son Ishtangandev.

        There have been traditional Garhwali and Kumaoni Folk Songs related pain, struggle and low social status in the societies. These types of songs were usually regional types those did not go beyond a particular territory. This author in his childhood heard a folk song about a widow leaving her children and living with other already married man. The widow did get tension free in the new home neither from society nor from new husband. She remarried third time but here, too she did not get comfortable social and family life. Initial lines were very painful depicting painful life of a widow.  However, the said folk song related to widow died immediately and never reached beyond a particular territory.

     The following modern folk song is successful in depicting the life of a widow. There is pain of separation for widow in the folk song. There is stress in the life of widow in this folk song. The folk song depicts a very low social status in a widow life.

          स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल 'मुनि विश्वकर्मा' :शिल्पकार समाज उत्थान कर्ता

स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल का जन्म 1911 में बमोली (डबराल स्यूं , पौड़ी गढ़वाल) में श्र गट्टी लाल के यहाँ हुआ था। पांच भाई और तीन बहिनों में सबसे बड़े थे। श्री गट्टी लाल चैलुसैण के आस पास क्षेत्र के पसिद्ध मिस्त्री व काष्ठ कलाकार थे ।
स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल की प्राम्भिक पढ़ाई लिखाई मिशनरी स्कूल चैलूसैण में हुई। चैलूसैण स्कूल पर क्रिस्चियन बनाने का अभियोग था और सामाजिक दबाब के कर्ण यह स्कुल बंद किया गया तो स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल को लखनऊ  जाना पड़ा। वहां उन्होंने   कष्ट कला विषय में लखनऊ आर्ट कॉलेज में प्रवेश लिया। चात्वृति मिलने से धन की मस्या हल हुयी। आर्ट कॉलेज से पांच वर्षीय डिप्लोमा प्रथम श्रेणी में पास किया। इलाहाबाद से कारपेंटरी टीचर्स ट्रेनिंग का दो साल का डिप्लोमा पास किया।
कुछ समय महानन्द मिशन इंटर कॉलेज में शिक्षक रहे।
फिर दिल्ली में नौकरी की
इसके बाद आगरा में इंडस्ट्रियल स्कुल में अनुनिदेश्क पद पर रहे।

1942-1945 तक देहरादून में निजी व्यवसाय किया फिर 1947-1965 उत्तरप्रदेश सरकारी नौकरी की। वे पदमपुर कोटद्वार बस गये थे
1965-1975 तक ठेकेदारी की।
स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल आर्यसमाजी बने और इस दिशा में उनका योगदान शिल्पकार समाज को सामजिक अधिकार दिलाने हेतु प्रशसनीय है। उन्होंने अपने क्षेत्र के कई लोगों को आर्य समाजी बनाया और भाभर कोटद्वार में जमीन दिलाकर बसाया। शिल्पकारो के पास मिलकियत नही होती थी और उन्होंने शिल्पकारों को जमीन मिलकियत दिलाने में सार्थक प्रयत्न किया।
इसी तरह शिल्पकार बच्चों को शिक्षा दिलाने में कई प्रयत्न किये यवाओं को वे उच्च शिक्षा लेने की प्रेरणा देते थे और आवश्कतानुसार सहायता प्रदान भी करते थे
पद्मा पुर भाभर , कोटद्वार में उन्होंने फलदार बगीचा लगाया और उस समय फलदार बगीचा बहुत से कास्तकारों के लिए प्रेरणा स्रोत्र बना।
स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल का सपना था कि प्रत्येक शिल्पकार पढ़ा लिखा हो। फिर दो लाख की राशि से उन्होंने शिल्पकार छात्रों को छात्रवृति देने हेतु एक ट्रस्ट  बनाया। यह ट्रस्ट आज भी शिल्पकार समाज हेतु कार्यरत है। स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल के  पुत्र कान्ति प्रकाश इस ट्रस्ट को सम्भालते हैं।
स्व. विश्वम्भर दयाल के शिल्पकार उत्थान कार्य हेतु लोग उन्हें 'मुनि विश्वकर्मा' के नाम से बुलाते थे।

Uttarakhandi Bhashaon ka Tulnatamak Adhyayan (Garhwali-Kumaoni par kendrit): Bridging Garhwalis and Kumaunis Linguistically

            Dr. Guna Nand Juyal started scientifically comparing Kumaoni and Garhwali languages by in his research and book- Madhya Pahadi Bhasha (Garhwali-Kumaoni) ka anushilan aur uska Hindi se smabdnh (1966).
            Dr. Bhavani Datt Upreti provided comparison of Garhwali- and Kumaoni languages in his book 'Kumaoni Bhasha ka Adhyayan' (1976). Bhavani Datt Upreti paid attention on grammar for comparison.
          Bharti Pandey (2011) compared Kumauni and Garhwali languages in her article 'Uttarakhand ki Lok Bhashaon evam any Rajyon ki Bhashaon ka Tulnatmak Adhyan.Howvwer, less importance
         Bhishma Kukreti (2012) compared Garhwali, Kumaoni and Nepali languages minutely from grammatical point of view. 
         Now, a book Uttarakhandi Bhashaon ka Tulnatamak Adhyayan (Garhwali-Kumaoni par kendrit) by Dr. Bihari Lal Jalandhari (2012) is welcome. Dr Jalandhari did research too on philological differences of Kumaoni and Garhwali for his Ph.D. thesis.
.      The present book has five chapters for dealing the comparison of Kumaoni and Garhwali languages.
         The first chapter 'Vishya Pravesh evam Prastavan' deals  proving Garhwali and Kumaoni as languages, the literary works and research works on grammar, phonological researches , dictionaries of Kumaoni and Garhwali languages.
  The second chapter deals about geographical; historical; and social as caste, education, religious beliefs and economical backgrounds of Garhwal and Kumaon. 
Third chapter 'Garhwali evam Kumaoni Boli ka Shabd Bhandar' has the following main subjects
1-Words of Hindi in Kumaoni and Garhwali languages
2-Sanskrit Words in Kumaoni and Garhwali languages
3-Plai Words in Kumaoni and Garhwali languages
4-Apbhransh (vulgar) Words in Kumaoni and Garhwali languages
5-Foreign languages Words in Kumaoni and Garhwali languages
          Fourth Chapter discusses comparison of prefixes, suffixes and participles in Garhwali and Kumaoni languages 
  The last chapter thrashes in details about differences of sentence construction style of both the languages. 
          The biggest drawback of first chapter as well the whole book is that Dr. Jalandhari totally ignored the works of Dr. Juyal , Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna ( Garhwali Bhasha ka Vyakaran ki Rup Rekha) , Dr. Bhavani Datt Upreti  (Kumaoni Bhasha ka Adhyayan) and Rajni Kukreti (Garhwali Vyakaran). No research work is complete in comparing grammatically Garhwali-Kumaoni without mentioning names and referring the works of Juyal, Bahuguna and Upreti. 
  The book is an outstanding effort for bridging Kumaunis and Garhwalis through linguistic means. Dr. Bihari Lal Jalandhari has been successful in making readers understand the insights of both the languages. At the same time, the philologist, learned scholar Bihari Lal provides the grammatical differences that prove the exclusivity of both the languages. 
  The book will inspire young generation for developing their mother tongue literature.
   The future research scholars will find the book very purposeful 
    The book is one of the jewels of Kumaoni-Garhwali grammar works. The book is definitely a collector's book.

              Ishtgandev was son of Nimbar.
                In Lalitshur inscription his title is Parambhattarak Maharajdhiraj Parmeshwar. The title shows that he was wise to take benefits of infighting among kings of Central India.
          He is called devotee of Brahman. The appreciating adjective for Ishtgandev shows that by now, Brahmins got very much importance in the society and politics of Uttarakhand.
In Lalitshur inscription, his queen name is Vegdevi and in Bhudev inscription his queen's name is Dharadevi.
           The inscriptions suggest that he broke the heads of elephants. That means a king from plains or army chief of king Nagbhatt attacked on Katyuri kingdom and Ishtgandev participated in the battle and won the battle.

Baramasa Khuded Geet: Garhwali Baramasa Folk Song Depicting Pain of Separation with Monthly Season Change

          Baramasa means the poems of twelve months. Many Garhwali, Asian folk poetries depict exclusive seasonal phenomenon of each month.
        This following Baramasa Khuded Geet expresses two subjects together with completing three aims.
        Each line of this Asian (Garhwali) folk song describes exclusive geographical aspect of each month related to season. The same line of Garhwali (Asian) Traditional Poetry explains a particular agro work held in the particular month. Lastly the line of folk song expresses the pain of separation of a woman whose husband is migrated far away for job.
  The construction of poetry is marvelous for completing at least three aims together. Salute to anonym folk song creator.

बार मैनो की बारामासी आइ , तख बिटेन वूंकि चिठि नि आइ।
My husband did not show his face when there is Fagnoti sowing in Faugun month,.
I did hard work for my husband when there is paddy sowing in Chaith month.
I'm unable to go as my husband is in foreign land when there is wheat harvesting in Baisakh month.
No woman goes for work without husband when there is heavy rain in Sawan month.
I wish husband coming here to make fun when there are flood in the Bhadon month.
My husband missed rice pudding when there is rice harvesting in Asuj month.
My love is not home for roaming under cloud when there is cloud in Katik month.
It is unbearable without husband when there is blossom in Lain in Mangsir month.
My husband did not show his face when birds sing Magh month.
My husband did not send letter for a year when  a year has twelve months.
