South Asian Medieval History of Icchatdev: a Salonaditya Katyuri Dynasty King

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar) - Part 104

South Asian Medieval History of Katyuri Imperialism in Kumaon, Garhwal and Haridwar (Uttarakhand) -15

(South Asian Medieval e History of Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar (Uttarakhand))
(South Asian Medieval History (740-1100 AD)

                                 By: Bhishma Kukreti

Icchatdev was son of Salonaditya Katyuri.
The title for Icchatdev is described on Katyuri inscriptions as Parambhattarak Maharajdhiraj Parmeshwar.
Icchatdev did not order any administrative copper inscription. His successors describe Icchatdev nominally.
The queen of Icchatdev was Sindhudevi. They had son Deshatdev who got crown after Icchatdev.
The capital of Icchatdev was Kartikeypur.
It seems that Icchatdev got the title only after the death of Pratihar king Mahendrapal (908) of Kanyakubja. Around 915, Rashrakul king reached Kanauj the capital of Kanyakubja.
                    Neighboring Region

It seems that in this time Rohilkhand and Saharanpur were under Gurjar Pratihar kings. Bareli was still minting centre for coins Times of India22/6/2003.
There is no evidence for that Haridwar (Uttarakhand) was under Katyuri kingdom.
Mahasu temple ruins of Hanol (Dehradun) of ninth or tenth century do not vouch that Lakhamandal or Jaunsar region was under Katyuri kingdom.
Same way Veerbhadra excavation site (three phases of today's Haridwar-Dehradun border) site (7-8 centuries) do not provide any clue about Katyuri kingdom ruled this area.

Budya Baikh: Asian Sad Folk Song Depicting Mismatched Marriage from Age point of view

Folk Songs from Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-299
(Asian, Himalayan Folk Song/Traditional Folktales/ Conventional Sayings Series)

                                      By: Bhishma Kukreti

In old time, many parents used to marry their daughters with very old men. The couple of lines of following folk song sadly illustrate the pain of mismatched marriages from age point of view.

O Mother! I don't think my old husband would cross a month.
O Mother! I was made for king and my luck threw me to old man.
O Mother1 old man was not fit for me; my luck threw me to old man.
O Mother! Why should I do use Mehndi on hand and why should I use Swag bindi on forehead?

Maila Paurdhana Baune: Jaunpuri (Garhwal) Folk Song about Women Reservation in Village Councils

Oriental/Asian Jaunpuri (Garhwal) Folk Literature
                 Translation, Interpretation by: Bhishma Kukreti

Jaunpuri language is an exclusive language of Jaunsar region of Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi and Dehradun. The language has exclusivity than Ravanlti, Garhwali, and Jaunsari.
Indian Government provided women reservation in village councils. It was seen that many women elected as village council chiefs were unable to know anything about working of village council.  The following folk song describes the odd situation of such women as village council chiefs.  The folk song also shows that folk literature creative pay attention on every aspect of society. The folk song shows political and social realism in folk poetry.

जौनपुरी   ( मोरी , जौनसार , गढ़वाल क्षेत्र  ) भाषा का   लोक गीत

पंचायतों में महिला आरक्षण लोक गीत

There would be woman village council members and chief.
Now I am Pradhan (chief) but I am unaware for working.
O society or ex-village council chief! Come with me for attending council meet.
O chief you advice me.

Early Medieval Asian History of Deshatdev:  a Salonaditya Katyuri Dynasty King

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar) - Part 105

Early Medieval South Asian Medieval History of Katyuri Imperialism in Kumaon, Garhwal and Haridwar (Uttarakhand) -16

(Early Asian Medieval History of Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar (Uttarakhand))
(Early Asian Medieval History (740-1100 AD)

                                 By: Bhishma Kukreti

The son of Icchatdev Deshatdev took the title –Parambhattarak Maharajdhiraj Parmeshwar. The inscriptions of his successors described him as Parammaheshwar Prambramanya. He used to help poor, orphans, and helpless people. It is describe on inscriptions that he used to donate gold to Brahmins coming to his region from all directions. Deshatdev deciphered conspiries of his enemies. He was religious.
Khujraho inscription state that Harsh Chandel (900-925) had conflict with a Khas king. Court poet Rajshekhar of Mahipal described the king of Kartikeyanagar as Khas king. It seems looking weakness of Mahipal, Deshatdev might have tried extension is rule to plains.
His capital was Kartikeypur.
His queen name was Mahadevi Padmalldevi.

                    Land donation to temples

The Deshatdev inscriptions state that he donated Yamuna village of Esal region to Vijayeshwar temple.
The Jageshwar temple inscriptions suggest that the pilgrims from Bengal, Bihar, Magadha and other Indian places used to visit Uttarakhand.
Deshatdev used to respect and donate gifts to scholars and Brahmins.

Pravas Peeda: Asian Traditional Painful/Sorrowful Song depicting Pain of Immigration/Migration

Folk Songs from Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-300
(Asian, Himalayan Folk Song/Traditional Folktales/ Conventional Sayings Series)

                                      By: Bhishma Kukreti

The massive brain drain from Uttarakhand started just British took over rule. The migration from Uttarakhand has been affecting Uttarakhand socially, religiously, politically, culturally and economically.
Migration brings pain, sorrow, sadness, aloofness too. There have been folk songs in Kumaon and Garhwal depicting pain of separation due to migration.
The following folk song shows the pain of migrated Garhwali living in foreign land and remembering his family in village

O mother when I cook Roti (bread) there is fire sound.
I remember you and my heart beats fast.
Tell younger sister to post letter
Tell her to write about her in law house.
It is not good in foreign land
It is better to live in forest of hills than in foreign land.
Here I don't find Hisar, Kingod (fruits of Garhwal-Kumaon)
Nor I find peacock, Cuckoo and Hilans birds tweeting.
O sparrow! Don't tweet in early morning
I can't bear the pain of separation from my mother land
When there is moon in the night
I don't know to spend those nights without your letter
Maternal uncle would have come to meet you
Tell him to post letter to me
When I don't get your letter I am sad
I feel pain of separation in foreign land.

A Katyuri King Padmatdev: A chapter on Oriental Early Medieval History

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar) - Part 106

Early Medieval South Asian Medieval History of Katyuri Imperialism in Kumaon, Garhwal and Haridwar (Uttarakhand) -17

(Early Asian Medieval History of Garhwal, Kumaon, Haridwar (Uttarakhand))
(Early Asian Medieval History (740-1100 AD)

                                 By: Bhishma Kukreti
The Katyuri inscriptions from Uttarakhand describe the title of Padmatdev as Parambhattarak Maharajdhiraj Parmeshwar. Padmatdev Is described as Parammaheshwar Parambrahmanya.
The inscriptions of his son Subhikshraj describes that he won territories by his strength. Inscriptions call him as the nurturer of earth. Padmatdev used to donate elephants, horses and jewels.

                     Pratihar Attack?

                    Padmatdev was son of Deshatdev.
Padmatdev was strongest the most among Katyuri kings. It seems that Padmatdev was contemporary of Pratihar king Devpal and Chandeel king Yashovarman. The Khajuraho inscriptions of Yasovarman Chandel state that he attacked on Himalayan region. However, it is not mentioned that he won the territory. Yashovarman got crown after 925 AD. Yasovarman was under Devpal up to certain period.  However, the titles of Padmatdev suggest that Padmatdev Katyuri was never under any Chandel or Pratihar king. There might be conflict or battle between Yasovarman and Padmatdev Katyuri but the battle might have been no win no loss situation.
His capital was in Kartikeypur. His queen name was Mahadevi Disaldevi.

                     Land donation by Padmatdev

The Katyuri inscriptions state that Padmatdev donated land for Badrinath temple for sacrifice, perfumes, rice, musical instruments, dance and other ritual expenses.
His son was Subhikshraj.

Syu (Maiswag) ko Atank: Oriental Folk Song collected by Jim Corbett illustrating Terror of Man Eating Leopard

Folk Songs from Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-301
(Oriental, Himalayan Folk Song/Traditional Folktales/ Conventional Sayings Series)

                                      By: Bhishma Kukreti
There had been a regular terror of man eating leopards in Garhwal and Kumaon from the human inhabitants came to hills.
In British rule over Uttarakhand, the terror of man eating Big-Cats was same as past. Colonel Jim Corbett (hunter turned conservationist, author) killed 33 leopards in British Garhwal and Kumaon. Jim Corbett was called Sadhu by Garhwalis and Kumaunis as he was savior from leopards.
Jim Corbett documented a folk song from Garhwal describing terror of leopard in his famous book 'Man Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag'.
Still today, Garhwalis and Kumaunis do not call Bagh/Lion for Big Cat family but call either 'Syu' (he) or Dhirag etc. The following folk song sates 'Syu' for leopard.
