Manaskhand: A Must Book for Every Uttarakhandi

Review of book Manaskhand (Kumaon Itihas, Dharm, Sanskriti, Vastushilp evam Parytan) by Hema Uniyal

                 Reviewer: Bhishma Kukreti

'Manaskhand 'is third book of eminent Uttarakhand cultural, architectural structure expert Dr. Hema Uniyal. Before this publication well-read scholar Hema published Kumaon ke Prasidh Mandir (2005) and Kedarkhand (2011). Her all the books got appreciations from academicians and general readers with same enthusiasm and zeal.
Hema Uniyal wrote the book after her visit to all major temples of Kumaon. The present book 'Manaskhand' takes readers to whole of Kumaon in terms of important temples with archeological structure with tour perspective too. The reader can get historical glimpses and historical-cultural aspects of Kumaon from 'Manaskhand'. Hema Uniyal has been careful enough to offer today's pattern of rituals to the reader about each temple she visited and described in this book. One of the remarkable researchers of Uttarakhand Dr Uniyal presents knowledge of more than one thousand temples of Kumaon in this volume.
Before, Kumaon, Kurmachal became poplar names for east Uttarakhand, the region was called Manaskhand.
The book has following chapters those provide the insight of Manaskhan-
1-Manaskhand ka Pauranik Avlokan or Review of Epic Period of Kumaon
2-Janpad Nainital ke Pramukh Mandir va Darshniya Sthal or Important Temples of Nainital and tourist places
3- Janpad Udham Singh Nagar ke Pramukh Mandir va Darshniya Sthal or Important Temples of Udham Singh Nagar Nainital and tourist places
4- Janpad Almora ke Pramukh Mandir va Darshniya Sthal or Important Temples of Almora and tourist places
5-- Janpad Bageshwar ke Pramukh Mandir va Darshniya Sthal or Important Temples of Bageshwar and tourist places
6- Janpad Pithoragarh ke Pramukh Mandir va Darshniya Sthal or Important Temples of  Pithoragarh and tourist places
7-- Janpad Champawat ke Pramukh Mandir va Darshniya Sthal or Important Temples of Champawat and tourist places
Dr Hema Uniyal provides the folklore aspects, historical brief and its importance in history; architectural concise of each major temple in each district of Kumaon. She also provides the ritual performance system or custom and present priests of the temple. Dr Uniyal provides for all important knowledge about tour value as reaching and lodging facilities in the region. The tourist aimed information compels the readers to think for visiting the region.
The biggest draw back in other books related to temples of Kumaon is that readers are confused by reading complex historian's theories and architectural terms of temple. However, Hema Uniyal has been successful in using simple and easy to understand phrases that book becomes very interesting to finish from first page to the last page. The temple photographs and her date wise visit detailing of to each temple make the book more reliable.
All praises are for D. Hema Uniyal for offering such knowledgeable informative volume.
The book is important for cultural, history research scholars and common people. This reviewer recommends every Uttarakhandi should read 'Manaskhand'.

History of Ruling Period of Garhwal King Mahipati Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -124

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -370

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

There are disagreements among historians about place of King Mahipati Shah in Pal/Shah Family tree.
According to historian Raturi, Mahipati Shah was paternal uncle (Chacha) of Shyam Shah. That means Mahipati Shah was either real brother or Manshah and son of King Sahajpal. It is also possible that Mahipatishah was son of Ramshah/Balramshah. Ramshah/Balramshah was paternal uncle of Manshah. There is no logic on accounts of Maularam about Mahpatishah being son of Dule Ramshah.
Atkinson stated that there was a wall inscription of Mahiparishah time of year 1625 in  Keshoray Math in Shrinagar. Most of the portion of Keshoray Math swept away in Birahi Ganga flood. However, record or statement of Jesuit missionary priest state that Shyam Shah died in 1631. It means the inscription can't be of Mahipatishah period.
There was acute famine in Garhwal in 1635.
In 1635, while visiting Haridwar, Mahipatishah killed Naga Akhada saints who were with weapons.  He requested religious donation from Kumaon King Trimal Chandra to repent his killing Naga Akhada Sadhus.
Ma'asir al-umara was written by Nawab Shamsud Daula Shah Nawaz Khan at Aurangabd (in Maharashtra) having details of Mughal Empire from 1556-1780
According to  Ma'asir al-umara, the Kangada commander Mirza Shiya Nazabat Khan  attacked Garhwal in 1635 after death of Mahipatishah. Queen defended the attack of Mirza Shiya Nazabat Khan .
That means Mahipatishah ruled from 1631-1635.

Umar Bundi Ja: Garhwali Poetry collection of Intellectualism

Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Literature- 2276
(Review of Modern Garhwali Literature series)
Umar Bundi Ja a Garhwali Poetry collection by Pritam Apachhyan

Review by: Bhishma Kukreti (Regional Language Promoter)

Bhishma Kukreti is of opinion that there are two concepts of Poetry creation in Garhwali language. First is Bahugunaism and another is Dandriyalism way of Garhwali poetry creation. Pritam Apachyan is the poet of Bahugunaism. Kukreti's view on Intellectualism in Garhwali poetry is about poems aimed for elites and written more by intellect facet of  mind (Bahugunaism) than heart (Dandriyalism).
'Umar Bundi Ja' is second poetry collection by Pritam Apachhyan. There are 41 modem Ganjeli (nearest to Ghazal) poems in this volume by Apachyan.
The subjects Ganjeli verses vary from sensible mind; love; philosophy; putrefying politics; antisocial and antinational elements, changing social values. The poet also preaches readers in many verses.
The exclusivity of Pritam is that he searches newer symbols for satisfying imageries.
Pritam uses newer and or old symbols usually for intellectuals and educated readers and he is successful in doing so.
The poems provoke readers, hit their intellects and tease too.
The language dialects are from Chamoli-Rudraprayag regions those bring freshness too.   The flows of poems are appreciable.
Famous Garhwali poet and Editor Madan Duklan appreciate Pritam that his poems not only satisfy your heart but many times taunt and hit hard too.
Overall, the Ganjeli poems of Pritam Apachyan fit to Bahugunaism defined by Kukreti.

History of Attacking Campaign- Strategic Plans on Neighboring Kingdoms by Garhwali King Mahipati Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -124

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -370

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

                       Appointing Capable Army Commanders

Garhwal King Mahipatishah /Mahipati Shah (1631-1635) was brave, ambitious, bold and brilliant soldier. Mahipati Shah planned ambitious campaign for expansion Garhwal Kingdom.
Mahipati Shah appointed capable army commanders for his march for expanding his territory.

Appointing Lodi Rikhola as Army Chief

Lodi Rikhola was born in village Bayeligaon of Badalpur region. From his childhood Lodi Rikhola was brave and had winning ambitions in any fight. It is still said that there is big rock in Bayeligaon that rock was brought by Lodi Rikhola himself alone. Lodi Rikhola is remembered a great brave, strong man of Garhwal.

Appointment of Madho Singh Bhandari as Army Chief

After the death of great warrior Lodi Rikhola, King Mahipati Shah appointed Madho Singh Bhandari as chief of army staff. Madho Singh also dg a tunnel canal in his native village Maletha. Madho Singh Bhandari was chief assistant of Lodi Rikhola.
Appointment of Banvari Das Tunvar as Commander

At the time of Kumaon campaign, Banwari das Tunvar was the army commander of the brigade. Banwari Das Tunvar came to Garhwal from Delhi and entered into Garhwal army at the time of Jahangir or Shahjahan. In Later stage of history many Tunvars as Shyam Das, Kehari Das came to Shrinagar with Suleamn Shikoh (Son of Dara Shikoh). Maularam was successor of these Tunvar.
There were many Tunvar soldiers under Banvari Das Tunvar in Kumaon campaign.

Diswali Soldiers (Muslim Soldiers) in Garhwal Army
Deswal or Diswal means the person from plains. There were sldiers from Muslim community in army of Mahipati Shah.
Ma'asir al-umara describes a Moghul army commander Dost Beg Mughal who was in Garhwal army. Perhaps after the death of above three commanders, Dost Beg had more influence on Garhwal Army. Most probably, Dost Beg was leading Deswali or Muslim soldiers in Garhwal Army.

There are tens of varieties of jumping in Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar as jumping from one stair to another step; jumping from tree, leaping from corridor or balcony, jumping from one field contour to other filed etc. Most of the time children jump for enjoyment than any competitive planning.
