MYSTERY LAKE TREK

Roop Kund is situated at the height of 5029 mts. In the lap of Trishun massif. This is usually called the "Mystery lake". Since human skeletons and remains of horses were found here. The lake, surrounded by rocks strewn glaciers and snow clad peaks, is magnigicent and enchanting. The Mystery lake of Roop kund has brought here many a besotted travellers since the discovery of human skeletons in the lake and the descending into it. For many years the origin of the skeletons remained a mystery. Some thought it to be the remains of General Zorawar’s army that lost its way while returning from Tibet. But the Popular belief, narrated in the folk traditions about the pilgrimage to the Nanda devi undertaken by Raja Jasdhaval and his wife the Garhwali princess Rani Balampa, who perished in the hailstrom at Jurangali, appears to be closer to the truth. Especially since the carbon dating of the skeletons and its anthropological studies point towards the authenticity of folk-lore. The trek pass through big alpine meadows, lakes and great trails of Himalayan valley.
Altitude - 5029 mts.
Grade - **
Days - 10 - 11
Season - April to November

SOURCE OF GANGES-TAPOVAN-NANDANVAN TREK
Gaumukh is where the water of Ganges trickle down from the glaciers. The sages called it "Gaumukh", because in the distant past, it proably appeared like a cow’s mouth, though today it is no longer appears so. It is the source of river Ganges. An arduous trek along the Gaumukh glacier leads to the scenic beauty of Nandanvan-the base camp of Bhagirathi peaks, that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding Shiv ling peak. A meadows that encircle the base of Shivling peak.
Altitude - Gaumukh - 4000 mts.
Tapovan - 4445 mts.
Nandanvan - 4625 mts.

Trekking beyond Gaumukh

Nandavan - Tapovan

Traversing the Gangotri Glacier to Tapovan and Nandavan. Ever changing view of Shivling.

A possible 3 or 4 day trekking Itenerary to Tapovan ccould look like this:

Day 1: Gangotri – Bhojbasa (3800m) in 5 hours. Progress along a picturesque trail, through dense deodar forests before emerging into the wide unforested valley. The trail is congested with porters, mules, pilgrims and mobile traders. From Raj Ghat, the glacial valley gets wider, and soon we can see the Bhaghirati massif, which rises above 6500 m. Alternatively one could walk to Chirbasa, literally the abode of pines, in aporx 5 hours (13 km). Camp on a grassy meadow beside the Bhagirathi. One could easily spent a few day here.

Day 2: Bhojbasa – Gaumukh (3900m) - Tapovan (4450m) in 4 hours. From Gaumukh, the scenery is fascinating, with praying pilgrims and half-naked saddhus meditating along the banks of the tumultuous stream that pours out of the glacier. The trail crosses Gangotri moraines before reaching Tapovan and its gorgeous meadows, furrowed with streams and scattered with flowers. From here the panoramic view over Shivling (6540m), Meru (6660m) and the Bhaghirati massifs (above 6500m) is stunning.

Om Parvat

Om Parvat (also Adi Kailash, Little Kailash, Jonglingkong Peak, Baba Kailash, Chhota Kailash)[3] is an ancient holy Hindu mountain in the Himalayan mountain range, lying in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India, near Sinla pass. Its appearance is distinctly similar to Mount Kailash in Tibet.[4] In addition, its snow deposition pattern gives the impression of the Hindu sacred syllable 'AUM' (ॐ) written on it. Near Om Parvat lie beautiful Parvati Lake and Jonglingkong Lake. Jonglingkong Lake is sacred, like Mansarovar, to the Hindus. Opposite to this peak is a mountain called Parwati Muhar, whose snow shines like a crown in the sun.

This peak was attempted for the first time by an Indo-British team including Martin Moran, T. Rankin, M. Singh, S. Ward, A. Williams and R. Ausden. The climbers promised not to ascend the final 10 m (30 ft) out of respect for the peak's holy status. However, they were stopped around 200 m (660 ft) short of the summit by very loose snow and rock conditions.[4]

Abi Gamin

Abi Gamin (also known as Ibi Gamin) is a Himalayan mountain peak situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state in India, 2 km (1.2 mi) northeast of Kamet. It lies on the northern border of Chamoli district, where India meets Tibet.

Abi Gamin is located in the central Himalayas and at the culminating point of the Zaskar Range. It is situated on the watershed of the upper Alaknanda and Dhauli rivers between the famous Manna and Niti passes on the Indo-Tibetan border.

Abi Gamin is the second highest peak in the immediate region, after Kamet. It is also one of the fifteen seven thousand metre peaks of Uttarakhand, and as such it is a significant peak. However it is not particularly independent, lying as it does close to the higher peak of Kamet, and separated from it by the high saddle known as Meade's Col, 7,138 m (23,419 ft).

Abi Gamin was surveyed (along with the rest of the group) by Richard Strachey in 1848; this was the first time that the great heights of these peaks was recognized.[1] In 1855, the Schlagintweit brothers named this range as Western, Central and Eastern Abi Gamin. These correspond to Mukut Parbat, Kamet and Abi Gamin.

The first attempt to climb the peak was launched by the Schlagintweits from the Tibetan side up the NE ridge : they estimated that they reached an altitude of 22000'.[2][3]

During the 1874-77 survey by the Survey of India under E. C. Ryall, I. S. Pocock set up a plane table at c.22050' on the West flank of Abi Gamin.[4]

Between 1907 and 1913 a number of expeditions attempting Kamet reached high altitudes on the flanks of this mountain. Thomas George Longstaff in 1907 recced the Purbi(East) Kamet approaches, and C.F.Meade's team followed the same route in 1913 to reach Meade's Col up the East flank of the massif. The attempts by A.M.Slingsby in 1911 and 1913 and C.F.Meade in 1912 were up the West flank from the Pachhmi(West) Kamet glacier. These reached Slingsby's Col(c.21000') between Mukut Parbat and Abi Gamin, but failed to go beyond c.23000'. [3]

Abi Gamin was climbed for the first time in 1950 by a small Anglo-Swiss Expedition comprising Alfred Tissierès, R. Dittert, and G. Chevalley (all Swiss), and Englishman Ken Berrill. They approached from the north side through Tibet, reached over the Mana Pass. Their NE ridge route was the same route the Schlagintweit's had tried nearly a century earlier! The summit was reached by the three Swiss members: they may have been accompanied by Sherpa Dawa Thondup.[5] [3][6]

Indian expeditions under Nandu Jayal climbed the peak in 1953 and 1955 by the SW ridge from Meade's Col, reached up the East flank of the massif from the Purbi Kamet glacier. [3] Later ascents have been up this route

Arwa Group

The Arwa Group is a set of three Himalayan peaks, named Arwa Tower, Arwa Crest, and Arwa Spire, situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state, in northern India. They are situated on the south side of the southwest branch of the Arwa Valley, south of the dry lake Arwa Tal, and northwest of Badrinath. To their south lies the Bhagirath Kharak Glacier. Lying near the border with Tibet, these peaks have restricted access, and they have not been frequented by climbers until recently. However their steep, rocky profiles offer an extreme challenge to high-level rock climbers.

The three peaks lie close together and share a base camp. Reaching the base camp in the Arwa Valley, at an elevation of 4,350 m (14,270 ft), requires a three day trek from Badrinath. All these peaks are on the Arwa-Bagneu divide and can also be approached from the south.

The Arwa Tower

The Arwa Tower is a peak with a huge rocky ridge along with a steep granite wall. The summit is a needle-like tower on the east ridge. The massif is flanked by many steep buttresses. The First ascent of the Tower was made by Britons Mick Fowler and Steve Sustad on May 14, 1999, via the northwest face.[1] In May 2002, a French expedition led by Antoine de Choudens (with 11 members) climbed Arwa Tower by two different routes: a first ascent of the south face, and a new route on the northwest face.[2]On June 9, 2007 Stephan Siegrist, Thomas Senf and Denis Burdet succeeded to climb the previously thought impossible to climb over-hanging north face route for the first time.[3]

Arwa Spires

The Arwa Spires are a series of stupendous rocky spires which offer highly challenging rock climbs. The spires have two main peaks, namely the main (or east) and west peaks. (However there is some doubt about which peak is higher.) They are situated southwest of Arwa Tower. The first ascent of the east spire (to the base of a small summit pinnacle) was made in October 2000 by a British expedition led by Kenton Cool, via the east ridge. Andy Benson and Pete Benson made the first summit climb, followed five days later by Cool, Ian Parnell, and Al Powell.[4]

Arwa Crest

Arwa Crest is the crest-like peak in the Arwa area. It is situated to the west of the Arwa Tower. The easiest route is via the north face. The first ascent was made, using this route, in 2002 by a French team including Philippe Renard, Grégory Muffat Joly, Laurent Miston, and Antoine de Choudens.
